Anybody know of any good indie/import CD stores in Vancouver, BC or Alaska (specifically Juneau, Anchorage, or Skagway)? I'm headed to those places soon, and I always like to check out the music shops when on vacation. Thanks.

I'm not aware of any great indie/import CD stores in Vancouver, so I'd be interested for any info as well. However, there are several used CD shops, all around the main shopping drag (i.e. Robson Square), also a Virgin Megastore there...

"a grate vinyl store two doors down form the big a&b on granville" = NOIZE records i think.

William is right on with the Scratch and Zulu recommendations, though I'd be more wary of extreme binge shopping at Zulu.. they have a NICE used section -- for vinyl especially. Zulu is probably the best single semi-mega music store in the Northwest

If you're looking for old skool dance vinyl or disco, do NOT miss going to Beat Street. I can't remember where it is... but it's right around the little area with all the sex toy shops and cheap pizza places... and it's on the second floor of a little arcade of shops in the area.

There's also Bassix for dance vinyl as well.

Dunno about Alaska.

I found a great independent record store a bit off the main drag in Vancouver, but don't remember its name or where exactly it was, which is helpful.

I was very struck by how cheap CDs were in Vancouver, much cheaper than in San Francisco, say.

Last time I was in Vancouver I remember a ton of little import shops up Robson, I think...they called it Record Row. I think there was a big A&B Sound there at the time, too. Are any of those places still there? I think one may have been called Odyssey?

nope, robson is too pricey for most of the little guys in the record game,so they tend to be in rougher areas. virgin is really the only store left on robson.
otis on davie st. is great for used vinyl and cds,as is charlies on granville for used cds, dvd's,videos & games.
...and for the americans coming up,our dollar makes things almost half as cheap again;)

Odyssey records is no longer. It went out of business a few years ago, along with another great favourite of mine, Track Records. Those two were along Seymour street right beside Sam and A&B Sound.

I'd agree that Scratch and Zulu are the best for indie stuff in Vancouver. Scratch is more "with-it" in terms of the Mille Plateaux, Kompakt, micro-house, glitch, idm, whatever sound. Also, the prices are a bit better at Scratch. One of the upsides of Zulu however, is that you can listen to any cd there on one of their many listening stations.

Yeah, yeah, it was Seymour, not Robson. I remembered that just after I posted, and spoke with my partner, who was from Vancouver originally. I also remembered going to Black Swan, out closer to the university. It was pretty good, though definitely Zulu is still the tops in my memories.
