POX - 60's Rock Bands...But There Is A Catch...

No Byrds, Beatles, Stones, Who, Kinks, V.U., Beach Boys, Beefheart, Dylan (I know, Dylan isn't a band, but you guys are tricky), Pink Floyd, Zombies (this last one cuz i feel like being cruel and i knew at least 50 ILMers would pick them) allowed. Um, I guess that's it. I left tons of classicness to choose from, but I wanted to make it a little harder to come up with 10 by taking away some of those moldy safety blankets. Oh, and no Jimi Hendrix Experience. got that? No:

Beatles
Byrds
Stones
Who
Kinks
V.U.
Beach Boys
Beefheart (I know, he is one guy, but I think of him and his band as indivisible.)
Dylan
Pink Floyd
Zombies
Jimi Hendrix Experience

I think it will make for more interesting lists. Humor me, I am old and frail. I haven't even come up with ten myself yet. So far, I've got Paul Revere & The Raiders, Mandrake Memorial, Pretty Things, Wimple Winch, CCR...hmmm, Sonics? Probably the Yardbirds. I will think about it some more.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 1 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

Blues Magoos
Electric Prunes
Love
Pretty Things
Shadows of the Knight
The Action
The Creation
The Seeds
Thirteenth Floor Elevators
Yardbirds

That grabs most of the big ones. No Small Faces cuz I don't dig em that much and no non-American acts cuz I can't remember them without looking at my CDs (although the Outsiders and Os Mutantes would definitely get serious consideration.)

"This is hard?"

no, shouldn't be. i just have to many faves.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:10 (twenty years ago)

It would be much harder if I was at home and looking at great bands who only had one big album, but it's easy when you are sitting at work and just remember bands that released tons of good stuff.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Blue Cheer
MC5
Os Mutantes

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

BTW if Love is elimated, the Music Machine or the Chocolate Watch Band would make good substitutions.

Oh shit I totally forgot the WCPAEB!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 1 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i was gonna put a ban on san francisco in general, but i didn't want to be too big of a nazi.

i like phil's broad definition of "rock group". i wouldn't have thought of the free design or sergio mendes or the 5th dimension. i'm all for it.

Moby Grape
Love
Marmalade
Small Faces
Flying Burrito Brothers
Yardbirds
Flamin Groovies (first album '69 and playin' before that)
Band
Foundations ('cause my friend Dave Duncan made me such a killing one-disc comp of these guys recently, and I love it all)
The Move

and the Foundations is kind of a ringer, in that I don't think they're really essential or nothing, but I sure enjoy them a lot. The others I think are all pretty essential, great, etc. Given that the Byrds and the others ain't allowed.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:47 (twenty years ago)

I very nearly had the Marmalade in there, but switched them out at the last minute 'cuz I realized my favorite tracks from them are from '70 on.

And I just don't get Moby Grape, try though I have.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Woah...Marmalade are actually a good band? Total revelation for me.

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

(A coupla further self-imposed rules to make it easier: A minimum of TWO pre-'70 releases is required to qualify. So no Stooges, no Yes, etc. And no Led Zep 'cause they were so quintessentially '70s. Matt & I were apparently on the same wavelength regarding that.)

Love
Nazz
Mothers Of Invention
Sly & The Family Stone
Kaleidoscope
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Silver Apples
Bob Seger & The Last Heard/The Bob Seger System
Big Brother & The Holding Company
Buffalo Springfield Blue Cheer

(That's the AMERICAN Kaleidoscope, btw, making my list 100% born-in-the-USA. Where's all the great UK bands? Up there at the top of the thread, of course!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

yeah, The Marmalade were good. "Station on Third Avenue" is as good a single from the era as I know. Their '70s stuff is lame--at least that's my take. OK, "Reflections of My Life" is '70s and that's a good single.

for me, Joseph, Moby Grape's first album is as canonical, if I can use that ugly word--as essential, OK, to my particular pop aesthetic which is hardly universal--as Big Star, and there are times I think they were actually better. As a live band, from what I've heard on bootlegs and such, they were better. Anyway, give "Hey Grandma" and "Indifference" and "Omaha" another listen...

Didn't the Flamin Groovies do one other '60s thing before "Snazz," the "Supersneakers" EP or whatever it was?

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

The Nihilist Spasm Band

Douglas (Douglas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 03:03 (twenty years ago)

Guess no-one else likes Traffic huh?

The first couple of Traffic albums are cool but nowhere near making my POX.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:12 (twenty years ago)

And if I could do a second-tier of ten, they'd go like this:

11. Marmalade
12. The Mamas and the Papas
13. The Association
14. The 5th Dimension
15. Free Design
16. Love
17. Spanky & Our Gang
18. Left Banke
19. The Cowsills
20. The Zombies

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

gonna add Creedence Zappa Sly Stooges MC5 Led Zep to the canonical exclusions (and cause they bleed into the next decade) also leaving off 5th Dimension and Mamas & Papas due to the "rock band clause.

still, superb picks so far all around!

Hollies
Quicksilver Messenger Service

Now come on folks!

Incredible String Band!!!

How are they a rock band?

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

They're not really a folk band either

Danperryismus (Dada), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

Ways in which ISB are a folk band:
- They performed traditional songs
- wrote original songs that sound like traditional folk music
- they performed with acoustic instruments (exclusively?)
- incorporated elements of traditional music and instrumentation from India, UK, the Middle East, etc.

Ways in which ISB are a rock band:

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

Repeat as necessary for half of the other artists mentioned in this thread.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:25 (twenty years ago)

They performed traditional songs - hardly ever in fact
wrote original songs that sound like traditional folk music - again, I would say, hardly ever
they performed with acoustic instruments (exclusively?) - all of their albums after 1968 have some electric instrumentation, in fact even "Wee Tam and the Big Huge" has bass guitar on it
incorporated elements of traditional music and instrumentation from India, UK, the Middle East, etc. - so?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

Yea, I think they fit under the expansive definition of "rock" from the period. They are mentioned in The Aesthetics of Rock and in Lillian Roxon's book, Walter!

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

I also put Tyrannossaurus Rex on my list and you cannot make me take them off.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Not all "rock" bands rock!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

International Harvester (all 10 of my slots)

Ian Riese-Moraine: a casualty of social estrangement. (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Whatever. I just think it's funny that Scott started a thread trying to create some kind of tight restrictions or something and people get around it by nominating every psychedelic folk duo and baroque pop act they can think of.

I'd like to amend my list to include Miles Davis' band circa Bitches Brew, the Sun Ra Arkestra, Ravi Shankar, James Brown and the Everly Bros. Thanks.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I FORGOT THE EVERLY BROTHERS!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:39 (twenty years ago)

I can't think of ten but the first that came to mind for me were the Stooges. Also were the New York Dolls around in the 60s?

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I love the Everlys--their WB '60s music is great. And I don't wanna quibble but were they a "band," and not two singers using the cream of LA session guys during this period? Since we're talking bands here...opinions?

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, that was my point and why I didn't include them in my original list.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Well Creedence had one of the greatest single runs of singles and albums this side of the Beatles or Stones..........so, them.

And the Everlies for "Cathy's Clown."

And Tim Buckley.

And the Monkees.
