Well-known perhaps just as much for being one of Eric Dolphy's last recording dates (maybe the last?) as well as being an absolutely fantastic album.

I hadn't heard much about this record until my Eric Dolphy thread a few weeks back and I snagged a copy a week back and it's remained in constant rotation since then.

I'm considering running a jazz records poll (since jazz is sorely underrepresented on ILX music polls)

This album fell into my hands about three years ago and I've listened to it more than most 'name' jazz records. It's fantastic.

J (Jay), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

its not a name jazz record? its pretty canonical.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Really? I didn't think Andrew Hill ever got much in the way of props until fairly recently.

J (Jay), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

well i don't know what recently is and i'm not a jazzcrit historian but that records been highly regarded since at least the early 80's when i first heard about it. plus yaknow its on blue note, it has a great line up. i don't know how it was recieved at the time.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Compelling innit. Maybe he's not quite so frequently name-checked by young 'out' enthusiasts?

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

It was 'Crowned' in the Penguin Guide!

Keith C (kcraw916), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 1 August 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Pretty much all the Hill sides on Blue Note are worth getting, esp. Black Fire and Andrew (and my but not many's favorite Compulsion) Guy's still an incredible player if you get the chance to see him in the person.

Great stuff- I got this around 1990, when BLue Note were selling off all their old vinyl stock for a fiver; I picked up loads. Two others I adore, but haven't heard much about are:

There's a lot of overlap here with this thread (that I started, jeez, two years ago!). I LOVE Point of Departure. It epitomizes this era so well for me, it's like a concise summary of mid-'60s Blue Notes -- quintet or so sized band, interesting instrumentation, great roster, strong compositions, a little bit out, a little bit modal, a large dose of bop/hard bop, some 'world' flourishes, some time signature stuff, a pointed spirituality.

Also, I thought that Penguin Guide crown link was a link to an ilm thread, which be great.

Exactly, I think the thing is that this record would sound just as now if it was released in 1985 or even 2005. This is a point that some writers have emphasized on the issues of unreleased sessions like Hill's Passing Ships.

That Blue Note back catalog is something else. You pick up a few, then you want to check out more and more and more, which only leads you to other records and artists.

three years pass...

Can we talk about the greatness of Andrew!!!?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Sunday, 2 November 2008 02:08 (sixteen years ago)

you can't go wrong with andrew hill on blue note/

OUT THERE: Andrew!!!, Point of D, Compulsion!!

TRIO-PLUS: Judgement! Smokestack

HARD BOPPISH: Grass Roots, Pax, Dance With Death

EXPANDED ENSEMBLE: Passing Ships

i still need to hear his debut: Black Fire

m coleman, Sunday, 2 November 2008 12:52 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, that's a great one. Listening to Andrew!!! last night, it occurred to me just how much he already had his shit together at/near the beginning of his recording career.

Smokestack is a motherfucker. One of the most compelling two-bass lineups ever to record.

Black Fire = classic from the album cover inward.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 3 November 2008 18:42 (sixteen years ago)

yes

Tyrone Quattlebaum (Hurting 2), Monday, 3 November 2008 18:43 (sixteen years ago)

(POD too, even though the art doesn't appeal to me as much. But what do I know?)

four weeks pass...

I am really into Black Fire right now. The tunes are strong, and this is the first I have heard Hill in a quartet. There is a lot of space and he takes advantage. Roy Haynes' drumming on the first track reminds me of Tony Williams, which is to say that Tony didn't come from nowhere.

one year passes...

Just got "Compulsion" for £2 in the HMV sale - BARGAIN is too small word to describe this, even with Caps Lock on

while we're talking about albums that aren't "POD", i have to say, "passing ships" is one of the best, really

uptown churl, Monday, 23 August 2010 16:09 (fourteen years ago)

Tom D, if you've never listened to Sun Ra's Other Planes of There, it's quite interesting to listen to alongside Compulsion, because at times Gilmore sounds like he's playing alternate versions of the same material. Even some of the rhythmic ideas on Compulsion strike me as similar to what's on Other Planes of There. (Not making any claims about influences though.)

Alas, I was never able to really get into Andrew Hill, including Point of Departure, which I really wanted to like. Compulsion I enjoy to some extent, but not so much more Hill's playing and composition.

_Rudipherous_, Monday, 23 August 2010 18:32 (fourteen years ago)

Innaresting. Have never really been able to get into "Point of Departure" either, but am really liking "Compulsion", did find myself thinking it reminded me of Sun Ra somewhat...

Black Fire/Smoke Stack/Judgement/Point Of Departure/Andrew!!!/Compulsion

There is definitely some of kind of unusual talent and drive present when someone can seemingly bang out 6 extraordinary masterworks like these in a mere 2 year period. M Coleman and Timi Yuru upthread from years ago are both absolutely otm.
