...and I thought I had heard every acid-fried Eddie Hazel /Funkadelic tune

In honor of George Clinton’s birthday today, here is an amazing
kohntarkosz exclusive: 7 minutes and 41 seconds of the most
mind-blowing unreleased Eddie Hazel-era Funkadelic recording you have
never heard, the holy-grail of George Clinton/Parliament/Funkadelic
collectors: THE RAT KISSED THE CAT. Its origins are the stuff of
legend, the song only available when traded among ‘Funkateers’ of the
highest funkatility for years. I have never heard of an actual vinyl
copy of this rarity being sold ever and it has never been re-released,
re-issued or compiled on any cd ever. It is not to be confused with a
later Parlet or Brides of Funkenstein recording of the same song. THIS
IS THE REAL DEAL, ACID-FUNK-ROCK of FUNKADELIC around 1970. A friend
and I studio-enhanced this monster jam just this morning off of a tape
copied from another friend’s tape, said other friend having gotten his
tape from some guy in Amsterdam in a funk-tape trade around 1987. The
song “The Rat Kissed the Cat” is rumored to have been pressed
mistakenly on some copies of “Standing On The Verge Of Getting It On”
instead of “Good Thoughts, Bad Thoughts”. Whether or not that turns out to be true, the song speaks for itself. It is the power of the
Funkadelic lineup that recorded “Maggot Brain” and “Super Stupid” with
the jaw-droppingly intense, acid-blues-rock, Hendrix-inspired yet
unmistakeable sounds of Eddie Hazel blazing on all burners for almost
eight minutes of funkadelic nirvana.

Man, nice find.

I wish I had some weed.

thanks!

wow! That just made my year. Thanks!!!!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 03:41 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious what the real story is, but I have my doubts that anyone actually involved remembers. I used to have Billy Bass's e-mail a long time ago...

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

I mean I have never heard of this song, and with so many reissues and bootlegs and boxed sets and rarities coming out since the dawn of CDs, I thought everything in the vaults had been emptied out.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

badass!! thanks

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

AWESOME!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

Clinton does tend to put everything out from the vaults. So god knows where this came from. But many thanks!

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

this is fantastic - thanks a bunch!

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah...this is fabulous. The extra "distance" sound that the multiple copies makes it sound kind of ominous, too. Kind of like the Chess style reverb. Great job.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

Can anyone identify the lead vocalist? I think I hear Fuzzy and George popping in and out in the background - but the lower, throaty lead vocal is someone I can't recognize....

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

Grate!! new mixtape standard.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

eedd, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

it's somehow more impressive and lobe-thwacking than the four remasters i just grabbed.

imbidimts, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

dammit, big loud. i just dl'ed this onto yr comp, only to see that youve already heard it...

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

haha - I burned a CD of this and my Windows Media Player inexplicably IDs the CD as Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water". uh, close, I guess... wtf?!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

Fucking AWESOME track!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

glad you all enjoyed that! I think the lead vocal is the late Ray Davis.

I'm digging that footage, too. It's ecstatic. Wish there were a few more closeups of Eddie.
Been on a funkadelic spree lately. Just picked up the 1971 live thing on Westbound, waiting on a copy of Osmium. The timing of this couldn't be better, really.

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:18 (twenty years ago)

That's just nuts, man. I've watched it three times.

"Thanks" doesn't really do it, but uh, thanks. Wow.

Man, this makes me think about blogging again. Of course, all I can think to do is link to these videos and drool, so maybe not.

Thanks to all who kindly ignored my "fottage" above. Just too blown away to type.

I wish the Parliament shows I've seen over the years had anything close to that sort of hypnotic energy. The only performance I've ever seen live that came close to that was New Kingdom back in 96.

There is no excuse for this thread not to have hundreds of posts. Is "1 Thing" worth hashing about for the umpteenth time when we have this?

I'm not saying this is the Holy Grail, but it is as noteworthy as Odysseus' tomb. (I just wanted to share that for no good reason)

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Thursday, 19 January 2006 18:35 (twenty years ago)

its kinda funny that George hasn't varied the structure of his shows in 40 years - introduce the vocalists, do a medley, get some girls from the audience up onstage, then leave while the backing band goes apeshit. But hey if it ain't broke don't fix it...

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:24 (twenty years ago)

And it ain't broke. The first time I saw P-Funk was a New Year's Eve show and he did that sequence twice.

Of course they did two 2+ hour sets, so not surprising that he repeated himself.

Still, just great footage. Makes me want purple bell-bottomed overalls.

Erik The Mainer (EZSnappin), Thursday, 19 January 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I cannot let this thread die until every last Funkadelic fan has seen this clip...

CD Description
The Funkadelic who had made the albums, "Funkadelic", "Free Your Mind And Your Ass Will Follow" and "Maggot Brain" collapsed in on themselves under the pressures of touring and nefarious substances in 1972, although some members shuttled back and forth between Detroit and Toronto and kept recording. One of the side projects embarked upon was an LP by a group called U.S. One single, `Baby I Owe You Something Good' b/w `I Miss My Baby', appeared that year credited to U.S. music with Funkadelic. An album reached test-pressing stage, but until now no more has been heard of it.

U.S. (which stood for United Soul) were from George Clinton's home town of Plainfield, New Jersey. They included future Funkadelic members Gary Shider and brothers Cordell and Larry Mosson. U.S. recorded in Detroit and Toronto with the album produced by Bernie Worrell, Ray Davies and Fuzzy Haskins. In addition it featured many Funkadelic musicians.

The original album master of five tracks includes some prime era Funkadelic grooves, including the outrageous `Rat Kiss The Cat On The Navel' and `Be What You Is', both uptempo psychedelic funk; the wonderful gospel-imbued vocals of Shider on `I Miss My Baby'; and the opener `This Broken Heart'. When the LP wasn't issued the group split up and Funkadelic co-opted some of their members.

This release is part of Ace Record's Westbound 40th Aniversary celebrations. A truly historic lost album it is the first off-shoot from the Parliafunkadelicment Thang, that became a whole industry in itself.
