Am I the only one who is really creeped out by Tegan and Sara?

I don't mean their music....I mean THEM. What's with those martian haircuts, they weigh like 60lbs...I don't get it.

preston, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

this has been discussed.

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:30 (twenty years ago)

As MJ put it, "You are not alone" . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

I really love their record from last year.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

But yes, they are odd looking.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

My dad gave me a copy of this: I listened to a few songs when I got it some weeks back then never felt any need to hear it again. They sound like something Courtney Love would be all over, but not in a good way at all (note that I heart Courtney).

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Odd looking? Their cuteness is unparalleled!

And I don't mean that in a sexual way. I mean it in a puppy dogs or a three-year-old asking where candy comes from sort of way.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

you couldn't move three inches in a $1 bin without being drowned in copies of their first record. I'm creeped out that they are now successful.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

They have bad haircuts and sometimes make funny sounds with their mouths, yes.

So Jealous is great.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:02 (twenty years ago)

they're lesbians, what do you want.

anyway, i think they are cute.

and "walking with a ghost" is perfect. (haven't heard anything else.) (that is, beyond the live show.)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

"Speak Slow" is my favorite song on the most recent record.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Creepy, yes.

Say what you want -- but twin lesbians are, and always will be, somewhat creepy. Then add strange piercings, warbly voices, and odd haircuts and they are downright strange. But they make catchy music nonetheless (from what I've heard).

PB, Tuesday, 2 August 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

At this year's Coachella Festival I was eating, sitting while eating a nice slice of pizza and watching Tegan and Sara. I hated them and I wish I could have those 30 minutes of my life back... Not even killing them we would be even.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

"walking with a ghost" is the worst song on that album!

twin lesbians are, and always will be, somewhat creepy

THUS IT WAS WRITTEN

W i l l (common_person), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:19 (twenty years ago)

Walking With a Ghost rules! I haven't heard anything else by them that I liked...they should make more chirpy nu-Cars songs.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

i thought the 'tard haircut' thing went out in the 90s.

also: leather tuscadero.

also: their music makes my spine ache.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 2 August 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

Was there an unplugged in-studio version of "Walking With the Ghost" linked at some point?

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:03 (twenty years ago)

While everyone obviously is free to be creeped out by whatever, complaints about T&S's perceived personal creepiness only allow their fans to imagine that we're all against them for those reasons (namely, creepiness) rather than trite, generic, forgettable songwriting. Which is why we're against them. (The songwriting!)

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

Um, "we" meaning "me." Delusions of grandeur are creepy, too.

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

The songwriting is the best part, but I guess you can think whatever you want to at least until I'm president-for-life.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:06 (twenty years ago)

I hate them. Neil Young insists on booking them at every Bridge School Benefit now, and they annoy the shit out of me. They're like extras from the Village Of The Damned.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:34 (twenty years ago)

I put the record on in honor of this thread! :)

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:35 (twenty years ago)

Marc, how come pitchfork took down your original review of So Jealous and replaced it with something slightly less offensive and jejune? I find that memory hole nonsense way creepier than twin lesbians with bad haircuts (who write great songs, in my opinion).

t. fiend (t. fiend), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

as a friend of the band, i can personally attest to them not being creepy. as for the haircuts, lesbians love rocking the fashion mullets.

pinder (pinder), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Cos they're creeps

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

That is a MULLET.

BEING A LESBIAN DOES NOT MAKE MULLETS OK.

I would hit it, though.

Jessie the Monster (scarymonsterrr), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:23 (twenty years ago)

I don't think they're CREEPY, but it's weird that they're Twin Lesbian Sisters.

Plus I like their nice melodies and catchy hooks.

Voodoo Child, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:25 (twenty years ago)

What is creepy about them? They're not lovers though, right?

I just find them boring and bad.

I'm Hi, Jared Fogle (ex machina), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

i haven't heard them but i really hate the name "tegan."

stockholm cindy (from norway) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 07:01 (twenty years ago)

what do they sound like anyway? i get the impression they're vacuous dawson's-folkpop for scientologists, but with a tenuous "indie" connection.

stockholm cindy (from norway) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 07:11 (twenty years ago)

i think that's the body of their entry at AMG.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

Marc, how come pitchfork took down your original review of So Jealous and replaced it with something slightly less offensive and jejune?

Not true, though you freaked me out there for a second. It's exactly the same as it was Jan. 25.

I can't speak to memory hole stuff before I joined Pitchfork last year, but there hasn't been any nonsense on the Tegan and Sara review. I'm really not as jejune as you remembered! :-)

marc h. (marc h.), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

I like Tegan. I can't stand Regan, tho. Maybe too close to Reagan. I really don't know what King Lear was thinking, tho. Goneril?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

never heard their records, but i did see them live recently, after being asked inexplicably by my little-steven-adoring brother. i didn't find them particularly more creepy than any other twins, and they were pretty different in a twins way (one sweet, one bitchy, etc). and sara's voice is great! very cyndi lauper!

i think that whole 90s folky womyn's music FANDOM is pretty creepy, but so what. occasionally they reminded me in a very faint way of roxy music (which may be just that occasionally they did something kind of cool)

geoff (gcannon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:45 (twenty years ago)

It's a popular look amoungst euro 'chicks' I've noticed of late. It looks odd but I find it sexy in a sort of "I don't give a fuck what you think" kinda way. All attitude, no pussyfooting. What could be more r'n'r?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

nine months pass...

tegan and sara are ace!
how can you not love them!

Sara has great hair, not too sure about the whole short fringe on tegan tho!

maisyyyy, Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Sara has great hair, not too sure about the whole short fringe on tegan tho!

a lot of times i find that a great haircut really takes some time to sink in. keep at it!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

Tegan, from The Onion's "Random Rules" this week (http://www.avclub.com/content/node/52153):

I am really resistant to certain UK bands that I won't name, that are drug addicts and alcoholics, because I don't think it's cool that they get to be popular, because so many of us are working so hard, and we're not drug addicts and alcoholics. It would be so much easier if we were, but we're not.

What an odd thing to say.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 29 August 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

LIFE WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER IF I WERE A ALCOHOLIC

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

ALSO COULD FIND TUNE

I Supersize Disaster (noodle vague), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 02:53 (nineteen years ago)

i thought the 'tard haircut' thing went out in the 90s.

Apparently, it's not just a haircut.

Marmot (marmotwolof), Wednesday, 30 August 2006 04:27 (nineteen years ago)

eighteen years pass...

jesus, if you want to be creeped out, just read this thread. so mean and scary.

scott seward, Saturday, 19 October 2024 14:42 (one year ago)

Assumed thread revive was for this https://www.jezebel.com/tegan-and-saras-catfishing-doc-will-make-you-want-to-sign-off-for-good which is way creepier than anything in this thread.

Dan Worsley, Saturday, 19 October 2024 14:59 (one year ago)

Misogynist subtext on the thread, check

Yuwen Hu's army (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 19 October 2024 15:03 (one year ago)

"Assumed thread revive was for this"

it is. i found a less gross thread to mention it on: Tegan + Sara -- s/d
