YOU ARE: still just a rat in a cage (despite all your rage).

stockholm cindy (from norway) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:11 (twenty years ago)

i love both songs but i must pledge my allegience to METAL

latebloomer: i hate myself and want to fly (latebloomer), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

"new dawn fades" is metal, though.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:21 (twenty years ago)

no, it isn't

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

good argument. you're absolutely right.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

"Fade to Black" would have had a better chance. Joy Division wins.

JD is dub metal motorik, thus their genius. Metallica is METALLICA, thus theirs at one point. Now, not so much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 11:54 (twenty years ago)

sorry, sabor de gene. I should say that it doesn't really do anything musically that's metal; it's gloomy, sure, but so's Schubert's "Death and the Maiden," which also isn't metal. Some say that metal's a feeling or a mood; I don't. Electric guitars & a gloomy mood don't equal metal, nor does a soft spot for Hawkwind; hence "New Dawn Fades," while sharing a few rudimentary characteristics with heavy metal, ain't.

"Got some death to do!"

Gotta go with WH(S) on this one.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Sorry but this is almost impossible to choose.
JD wins by default I suppose because I never listen to metallica now.

Last Of The Famous International Pfunkboys (Kerr), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

banana you know i heart you but the all-or-nothing metal-purism has gotta stop

stockholm cindy (from norway) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

All-one or none! All-one or none!

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:00 (twenty years ago)

seriously though I'm no purist! Ulver, Primordial, Nile, Mayhem, Sabbath, shoot even Steppenwolf if you want, that's all metal! New Dawn Fades ain't though, any more than a track with a violin on it is automatically "classical"

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:01 (twenty years ago)

there's a difference between saying a goth song is like a metal song and saying that (for example) omg that dog's "he's kissing christian" is EXACTLY THE SAME as some 18th century chamber piece.

MIRROR STARES BACK HARD.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

The Moby cover would have stood a better chance. M*tallica wins.

Leeeeeeee (Leee), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard the Metallica song. "New Dawn Fades" always gets a bad rap but I really really like it. One of my favorite JD tracks.
