i say classic cos
the last tricky album where he was still dark, gloomy, depressed
the music is great on this
yes it might be gloom for glooms sake but its better than him trying to appear happy, and i like that despondency and unwillingness to change
its great that this album shows absolutely NO light at the end of the tunnel
he wasnt all cleansed on this
it has a great slick rick cover

This is when my attention started to wander. I like the arrangements but the songs aren't as memorable. I've listened to it several times since purchasing it and i still prefer Maxinquaye, the first side of Juxtapose, and the first side of Pre-Millenium Tension, in that order.

I always thought this was his art-rock album.

is this the one with polly harvey?

i've felt like one of the 25 people who always really liked Angels.

it's been a while but i love its gravely, arty, abrasiveness.

(xpost yes, with pj)

it's been a while but i love its gravely, arty, abrasiveness. i have always liked it better than Pre-millenium, perhaps, because it is so severe and so singular. No other record really sounds anything like it.

Classic, but with some quibbles - some of the lyrics are just horrible (and I say that as somebody who does his best to ignore lyrics by most artists, also the live versions of the songs that appeared before the album are astonishing - live most songs were a lot faster and funkier - sort of like a cross between Tricky's PMT & Prince's Camille stuff - noisy/wierd/pretty/funk.

Xpost x 3

yes it's the one with PJ Harvey - including the line "Media is Murder" or was it "murder is media" - either way I couldn't help but think of Meat Is Murder.

xpost - which songs in particular would you say have the worst lyrics? also, any particular gigs i should look out for to find those early live versions? i would love to find those.

fizzle, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Dammit, you got the expanded version with Peyote Sings & Taxi - Could never face buying a second copy of AWDF just for two songs - true I have heard of MP3s, but not when I was desperate to get those two songs. Have to go look for them this weekend. What are they like?

Xpost of the top of my head - worst lyrical offenders 1) Record Companies 2) Money Greey 3) Broken Homes - which contains the "Murder is Media" line.

For live info wait till this weekend when I go to my parents - I'll see if I can find them or at least some info - maybe YSI them - I wonder what mp3 - Wav - mp3 does to sound quality though.

any links to those gigs would be fantastic! thanks.

fizzle, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

i got the original (vinyl) version, i had no idea that was an expanded version.

The gigs around that time were fucking intense -- "Money Greedy"-type polyrhythmic breakbeats + crazy chanting. Who needs chord changes?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I decided this was a godawful waste of money and sold it back quite quickly. I regret this, "Analyze Me" was fantastic, about two-thirds of it was pretty ace generally. It got a big (and positive) Simon Price review at the time, in Select, which was quite surprising given how on-the-wane he was in terms of public interest. Muzik gave it 0/5 and 5/5 simultaneously and said that it was 'unrateable' or something.

I saw Tricky on the AWDF tour at the El Rey, and he was really pissed off at the crowd. He played no encore, and it was the worst performance I've seen him give (out of the four times I've seen him play live.)

Glad I still have this.. seems impenetrable in parts, but so weird and interesting. Saw a show in Baltimore back then, it's true that I recall lots of crazy breakbeats going on and on and on, hardly any real songs, it was something.

I say dud, for the simple reason that I don't think it's possible to care about the album other than in the context of caring about Tricky's other work. It's not that it's awful (unlike some later Tricky work), or unredeemable; it's just that there's no real reason to listen to it except in relationship to Maxinquaye or Pre-Millenium Tension (both of which I think ARE classic). It's interesting and valuable for all the reasons people say, but only if you already give a shit.

I also like Vulnerable, by the way. If he had come out with that after PMT, he would have had a much more lucrative career.

The last good album he did, although I liked parts of the DMX album.

The newest albums (with Marta) are actually quite good even if they’re not competing with his peak.

I saw Tricky live on the tour for this album and it was the loudest bass I have ever heard in a club. It rattled your entire body and was like this huge low end pillow in the room.
