Ned Raggett Not In Tune With Montreal Jury

Ned Raggett's opinion, that Por Nada's sophomore album, Huge Granite Structure Fell Out Of The Sky, was "a fine blend of nervous tension and atmospheric sweep" was not shared by Pop Montreal Jury members last evening, as the group voted against admitting the Edmonton-based post-rock quartet to the festival's 2005 line-up. The group had submitted a bio that lead off with the complete text of Raggett's All Music Guide review.

The Review In Question

Ned's gonna be hella pissed.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

haha, I bet you Montreal Jury panel members included folks from GYBE! who all are probably operating under a Raggett fatwah.

lol

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Good old jury systems. A garenteed way to get into NMW was for me to give you a 0.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

They are? Spill teh gossip.

xxpost

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

No Godspeed! members, nor affiliates, were involved in the selection process!

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:50 (twenty years ago)

yeah, so you were TOLD.

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Clearly the jury was addled by all the poutine and fake champagne they were stuffing themselves with.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

But another notable Montreal mafioso-styled organization was involved. Two representatives from Vice's marketing company, adVice sat in.

The band was STUNNING in its mediocrity. Like the city of Edmonton itself, actually. Notwithstanding their string of Stanley Cup wins during the glorious decade of the 1980s.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 17:58 (twenty years ago)

Pop Montreal's biggest fault is that the festival does not cater to the Neds of the world.

alex in montreal (alex in montreal), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

A severe deficiency! I shall impose sanctions.

The Por Nada guys actually contacted me and asked if I would review the album, bless 'em. Like my review hopefully indicated, I thought them more a work-in-progress than a band that has made its best work.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

Why does a self-described post-rock band want to play something curated by a panel called "Pop Montreal Jury" anyway?

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

That's endearing - they should have mentioned that in their bio, it might have won them some points. It could have been that the songs selected were not their strongest, too - we only listen to 3 songs of the group's selection in determining...

The "Pop" in Pop Montreal is sometimes a bit of a misnomer. It's not American Idol. Yet...

The jury was stacked against anything remotely shoegazeresque or dreamy, anyway. I had to implore them to include at least one of the many bands that applied listing Mazzy Star as an influence.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

What, does a Libertines influence count for more? ;-)

Starting a thread calling out an ILMer in public and, simultaneously, a panel in the third person in which you're a member is a bit awkward. Not suggesting any suspicions. It's just weird, but anyway...

Who did qualify?

Quebec hates shoes.

#1. I'm more than a member, I'm a facilitator, and it's more than a bit awkward.
#2. To be announced w/in a week or so.
#3. Now if they were a sandal-gazing band, with hackysacking influences, that'd qualify them. Also, duct-tape sword fighting.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Sandal-gazing with hackysacking influences!

I can hear it now. String Cheese Incident meets Chapterhouse.

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

I would pay full price for a SCI/Chapterhouse collaboration.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

I thought ANY band made it to Pop Montreal. Especially if they were Canadian. So I'm curious, if they didn't want any shoegaze, what kind of music were they more willing to include?

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Ned, what do you think of Of Montreal, particularly the new album?

a pair of black wizards, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard it but I was deeply unimpressed by the earlier stuff. Yes, I have heard that the new album apparently is far better but I have other things capturing my ear that I would rather listen to.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Ned, it's very good.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

Thank you for apparently not reading the second sentence of my previous post.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

I demand an investigation of this matter.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

Touchy! I did read it, btw - just felt it warrented mentioning.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

You're under investigation, too...watch yourself.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

Only one ska band applied this year! Many, many, many more funk bands did, though.

It's not limited to any specific genre, but it seemed the most jury members were pre-disposed against shoegazy-type music. And truthfully, the quality of any bands doing that sort of thing, which I love, was pretty lacking.

Jay Watts III (jaywatts), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

If only Kid Champion would reform.
