ERIC LASKA (Ricky Ben-Udi), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

but what we really want to know: how were the TALL DWARFS???

stingewell, Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

From the reviews I've read, it's best to not get an opinion of Tall Dwarfs live from an Olivia Tremor Control/Neutral Milk Hotel fan.

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Pearls before swine, it sounds like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

..which is why I'm precisely happy about seeing the Dwarfs headline in Chapel Hill, tomorrow.

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

haha, are Chris and Alec going to cover "The Jeweler", with a full back up chorus?

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

"He worships god with ashes..."

*4AD fans invade*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i'll also be at the CH show. didn't know there were other triangle residents who posted.

stingewell (stingy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

so last night, at work, i got a book in the bargain bin called "American Troubadours: Groundbreaking Singer Songwrites of the Sixties." It's got a whole chapter on Tom Rapp! neat! It's also got chapters about people I don't give a shit about. But it was like $3, so whatevah..

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

It's also got chapters about people I don't give a shit about

Ah, but name some names...

Tom's a cool dude, spoke to him briefly at T2.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

have you guys heard alec's [newish] solo record yet?

chris andrews (fraew), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:13 (twenty years ago)

i'll also be at the CH show. didn't know there were other triangle residents who posted.

Stinge, this may scare you, but I'm in Seattle right now, and I will be at the Chapel Hill show tomorrow night. (Yes, I'm flying just to see this show. It's a first for me.. I figure it would happen one day.. and tomorrow is that day.)

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

..meaning I live in Seattle. This will be my second time in the tri ever.

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Random dudes Ian doesn't give a shit about include Tim Buckley and Tim Hardin. Someday you too may appreciate them, bro. Both rule.

Hatch (Hatch), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Buckley took a fuck of a long time for me so I don't blame Ian at all. Hardin I am severely indifferent to.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

busted!

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

brace yourselves!

I am an Olivia Tremor Control fan and a Neutral Milk Hotel Fan, and I thought the Tall Dwarfs were fan-fucking-tastic last night.

PeopleFunnyBoy (PeopleFunnyBoy), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

...also Fred "Everybody's Talkin'" Neil, who allmusic.com incidentally describes as "a cross between Tim Buckley and Tim Hardin."

Hatch (Hatch), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

OMG!!

(Heh, I remember a time when everybody who liked OTC also liked NMH also liked Tall Dwarfs also liked Gorky's also like SFA and.. well, for some reason, that's not the case anymore... I'm not blaming the fans nor the bands, of course. I blame entropy!)

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:39 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, that was the general vibe from the ooooooold days when I went to Terrastock II in S.F. in 1998.

donut ferry (donut), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

according to google, the rest of the peeps in that book are David Ackles, David Blue, Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Fred Neil, Phil Ochs, Tom Rapp, Tim Rose and Tom Rush

plain ol' jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

I like how that's almost arranged in a 'change one letter and get a new person' line.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 August 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

aren't the dwarfs headlining in san fran next week too? i guess you've probably already left by now though donut. and certainly you've already got your plane ticket. hope you enjoy our town while you're here. ha

stingewell, Thursday, 4 August 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I like Phil Ochs.

Anyone wants a copy, browse the bargain section at your nearest Barnes & Noble.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 4 August 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

haha i got to last night's show towards the end of the dwarfs' set. two seconds after entering the ballroom, i'm hearing loud lead vocals but mysteriously see no lead singer on stage with the jammin' band members. suddenly this dude in a sleeveless tropical-print shirt *runs* through the packed audience, hits into me, keeps running past. i'm like what the fuck? but then he got on stage and i realized he was the lead singer, wearing a headset mic and running thru the audience, so it was cool. (this was my first time hearing any of the dwarfs' stuff, and for the record this die-hard otc fan thought it was pretty dope.)

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

oh also - does anyone who was there last night know who the other guests (besides mangum) were during the otc set? there were definitely more people on stage than the 5 original olivias. i was pretty sure i saw kevin barnes from of montreal playing trumpet in back, but then he left the stage. and there was this guy playing banjo up front who looked really really familiar but who i don't think is from the original lineup, maybe another elephant 6 band?

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

For a second I misread the thread title as "Jim Mangrum" as in Jim Dandy Mangrum from Black Oak Arkansas, and was weirdly excited. This other news, I really couldn't give a crap about.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 4 August 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

like, what songs did OTC play? all new? old jams?

black foliage remains one of the few classic E6 moments.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

they played most of both albums, including the full green typewriters suite (fucked-up tape loopery as well as all the songs), plus a song each from the giant day and california demise 7"s, plus one song i didnt recognize...it was awesome...

swvl (vozick), Thursday, 4 August 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

stinge.

yeah, the dwarfs are playing sf on tuesday, but
a) i already set up this trip a long time ago with cheap airfare because someone at flying nun told me this was the ONLY headlining show.. then a month later, the sf show was confirmed.

b) tuesday aug 9th is a very bad day for me, work-wise

c) i like sf a lot, but i've been there. this is only my second time in chapel hill. Nice change of setting for once.

Show starts in a couple of hours.. if you see a stubbly guy with short, balding blond hair and a Big Business t-shirt (army green t-shirt that has an elk with a pentagram tiara) that's me.

donut ferry (donut), Thursday, 4 August 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

swvl, the guy playing banjo may have been The Late B.P. Helium (can't remember his real name).

cdwill, Thursday, 4 August 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Brian Poole is The Late B.P. Helium.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 4 August 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

Some kid next to me on Chris Knox's antics: "that guy is like a gay Dudley Moore."

TD's were great, killer versions of the oldies especially.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Friday, 5 August 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

OK, my decision to hop all the way over to see Tall Dwarfs headline in Chapel Hill = best decision ever. I came, I saw, my ass was wholely kicked. I can die now.

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 5 August 2005 04:59 (twenty years ago)

HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAH!

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:00 (twenty years ago)

Openers the Tall Dwarfs made their anticipated Chicago debut. The New Zealand duo has been touted by hipster American bands and fans, but its insufferable performance epitomized talent-deficient indie-rock that receives attention simply for being different. Wobbly and tunefully invariable, the Dwarfs read pointless lyrics from print-outs and sonically resembled a cassette-tape recording of amateurish singer-songwriters practicing in their bedroom.

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

LESS AMATEURITY, MORE EMOTIONAL BLISS

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:02 (twenty years ago)

"dude, your beard is perfect."

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

stence, would you believe that had it not been for a minor difference between opening band issues, MY DAD IS FUCKING DEAD was slated to open for tonight's show???? Imagine travelling to see this, and then seeing My Dad Is Dead opening, unannounced. But, nah.. couldn't happen. grrrrrr.

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 5 August 2005 05:11 (twenty years ago)

(that last sentence from the review, unless it was just a really really bad sound mix or something as far as "sonically resembling a cassette-recording", couldn't have been further from the truth, based on tonight's show.. and let's say tonight's show had a share of technically difficulties.)
