Classic or dud: people saying "inna [whatever] stylee"

...Assume, if you like, that the people in question do not otherwise speak in Caribbean patois and the subject in question is unrelated to reggae/ska/dub/etc. E.g., "inna White Stripes stylee," "inna nu-metal stylee."

I think this is in the category of things that may have been clever/funny the first few hundred times and are beginning to smack of cartoony appropriation.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I've never heard anyone say that. I might have to steal it.

WillS, Friday, 5 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

I think I saw someone do it on the news the other day. Some inappropriate place anyway.

I didn't know it was Caribbean.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

sorry dude, but all things jamaican are simply INFECTIOUS.
it's the rules.

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I didn't know it was Jamaican, I thought it was just retro-90s. Like putting "age" on the end of randomwords. Skillage.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 5 August 2005 13:39 (twenty years ago)

A few uses gleaned from the past 6 months or so are pasted below. Some do, in fact, come out as whimsical and apt--I just wondered whether others thought it has run its course, or what.

CLASSIC! If I do it.

Inna Rub-a-DUD stylee: if anyone else uses it.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

shit, i'm in that list twice. fuck, inna fucking-hell stylee.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

Classic. I pretty much always like it and I meant to use it myself yesterday before I was Poxy Fuled. But I also pretty much always like when they make a reggae version of a song and take a word that sounds like "dub" and sing the word "dub" instead- "What the world needs now/ is dub, sweet dub."

k/l (Ken L), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'm on that list and I have no recollection of typing that phrase. Maybe I was posting in a hungover stylee...

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm on it four times, each inna different name stylee

Outsider Enter Port City (sexyDancer), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I remember seeing this er trope used in music papers in the 1980s. It's an oldie! It doesn't bother me one way or the other.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Massive dud. I'll always think of Apache Indian when I hear/see it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Dud, inna Pete Wylie stylee.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

as good as saying 'on a [___] tip'

N_RQ, Friday, 5 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

"on a [___] tip" is much, much worse!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen this outside of ILX. I assumed it was some ILX meme from 2001 that people still clung to.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:44 (twenty years ago)

I think I first saw it used in smash hits!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Or maybe I've seen, like, Sterling Clover use it in the Voice, but you know, same diff.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

I think I first saw it used in smash hits!

i remember me and my mate woose saying it a lot at school in 1991 or so, so i assume it was used a lot in the NME by the likes of collins/maconie/quantick. they are, after all, responsible for most of the shit and gibberish i spout.

futuristic hover-style jetpack ... hahah hahahah ho god.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

That list of posts just made me laff. Can we get rid of "über-____" while we're at it?

p.j. (Henry), Friday, 5 August 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

Defend the indefesible: White American DJ's saying "riddim".

PappaWheelie (PappaWheelie), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:08 (twenty years ago)

i assumed this was an ilx-centric thing. dud like all things ILX!

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

from my voice piece on Coral Fang: "Strong hooks remain, and some of the old-school alt-ness can be blamed on producer Gil Norton's Foo Fightin' stylee..."

I REGRET NOTHING
(though I'm never doing it again, knock on wood)

miccio (miccio), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Whitey Ford, Friday, 5 August 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

WHEW I have only ever said this five times on the board and four of those times were for comedic effect.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 5 August 2005 17:10 (twenty years ago)

All inna 'Stylee' stylee.

Inna Stylee, Friday, 5 August 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
So apparently, if you google 'inna stylee,' this thread is the first result.

Don't ask me why I googled inna stylee.

Hoosteen (Hoosteen), Thursday, 6 July 2006 06:58 (nineteen years ago)

I have said this six times here, the last in April 2002 - it was just a phase.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 6 July 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

I was convinced i had used this here, but search shows nothing!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 6 July 2006 09:12 (nineteen years ago)

Paul Simonon of the Clash used to pour paint all over his bass inna Jackson Pollack stylee

The only acceptable one in that list.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 6 July 2006 13:10 (nineteen years ago)

And the only people I've ever heard actually say this are Sublime and 311, so please take note.

DATE RAPE STYLEE!

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 6 July 2006 13:12 (nineteen years ago)
