Jandek in London

This is all from the Upset the Rhythm website:

The longest-running, weirdest, loneliest enigma in popular music is a guy from Houston, Texas who calls himself JANDEK. Since 1978, JANDEK has made some 42 albums of dissolute, atonal folk and blues for the mysterious CORWOOD INDUSTRIES label, which has put out nothing else but JANDEK! For such a prolific, legendary musician, little is really known about the man - the first 26 years of his career passed without a live performance or an official interview. In 2004, however, that partially changed with the release of the "JANDEK ON CORWOOD" documentary film and his first ever performance at the INSTAL 04 festival in Glasgow. Since then, JANDEK has made a handful of skirmishes into the live arena in Scotland and the US and is returning to the UK again in October for INSTAL 05 and this, his London debut and 8th ever live performance!

CHIE MUKAI first picked up an Er-hu (a traditional 2 stringed Chinese violin, of somewhat rebellious tonalities) in the late 1970's. Working with this instrument and its Japanese cousin, the Kokyu, MUKAI has developed into one of the key figures in the Japanese underground, with a signature sound of elongated and momentous, slowly shifting drones and dream psych-folk improvisations, often offset by tremulous vocals. MUKAI is also performing at INSTAL 05 and, again, this will be her London debut.

Our sincerest thanks and warmest wishes go to Barry Esson and the INSTAL 05 festival for making this show a possibility. We are overwhelmed that they asked us to be involved - THANK YOU!

Blasphemy! But the distance between WIRE-style hype and reality can be quite large. Do go on, Harvey - more details!

Due to a quirk of fate, I've managed to see Jandek twice without hearing his records at all. Nice to know someone who's steeped in his output shares my "Well, y'know 'salright, suppose . ." kind of reaction to the live experience. Which is not to write him off at all.

I was genuinely surprised. His previous shows have been a mixture of keyboard-based performances and sets with a full rhythm section. This one was solo acoustic, and sounded much like most of his output (or, at least, the output I've heard. I've not had exposure to his solo bass or a-cappella recordings. Thank God).

sorry, that was perhaps a bit snide. from what i've read abt his American performances, jandek seems to be trying out different live styles/sounds/groupings - i think the London gig IS the first one he's performed solo-acoustic, which I guessed was as much to do w/ travel logistics etc. as anything else (a real shame that Richard Youngs and Alex Neilsen couldn't make the trip down as well)

i saw jandek in glasgow and london, and enjoyed the scottish performances a lot more, particularly the trio w/ Alan Licht and Heather Leigh Murray, Jandek pounding out basic drum rhythms under/over wailing skronk - overall, I was surprised/impressed at just how well his material/outlook 'adapted' to the noize-improv aesthetic

I was certainly intrigued by talk of a "spoken-word" set in Glasgow. You have any more details on that?

harvey.w (harvey.w), Thursday, 20 October 2005 09:47 (twenty years ago)

at the start of his sunday set jandek read out a longish text piece - which seemed to be about abuse and confinement, far as i cld tell - while he blew into a harmonica and loren mazzacane connors twanged away in the b/ground - not esp. compelling, to be honest

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 20 October 2005 10:34 (twenty years ago)

you know I thought jandek would be AWFUL in glasgow and only really stuck around to actually see him in the flesh... but it was v. compelling, both sections I felt... I had sat out in the bar area, with my pint and just lazily drifted away, listening to it... and as I said to colin I'm not sure if I liked it so much because I was just left to myself and I love myself so much... second thing was too long but both funny and scary in parts... mazzacane connors playing was GREAT in the first section, as was jandek's harmonica...
