2004: My Year Of Jandek (46 matching messages)

I live in the same town as the Jandek on Corwood producers and the movie is far from an attempted cash-in on Jandek. It's a great introduction to Jandek and most people who see the film and haven't heard a Jandek record usually end up buying one or more. The local indie shop in town has sold out of the entire Jandek catalog three times at this point, I think. I'm glad it's finally getting a dvd release.

Jandek/Austin/Ticket Announcement Today! (29 matching messages)

(and finally: I would say there are a number of interesting possibilities to explain Jandek. The most boring, and most obviously inspired-by-conspiracy-theory, is the "he had a grand plan!" idea. If Jandek had had a "grand plan," it was a very retarded grand plan, as it involved toiling away in near-obscurity for a couple of decades for the eventual reward of...praise from people who love obscurity. Yeah, he's really "cashin' in," that Jandek. Not sure which idea you think I'm married to the way you're attached, mollusk-like, to the "JANDEK PLANNED IT ALL ALONG OMG LOLLRZ!!!" idea)

"One third of the cds smashed."
When you say "smashed", do you mean the cases or were the CDs themselves smashed and unplayable? If so, will Jandek replace those if you send them back to him? Now that a month has gone by and you've had time to listen to all the CDs, are you happy with your Jandek collection? I'd like to know before I send off my $140 for the big box of Jandek. Anyone else's experiences dealing with Corwood would be appreciated, as it's still the the cheapest way to my knowledge to get everything at once.

Jandek - HIStory (9 matching messages)

I've probably heard about eight Jandek albums, so--not having heard, say, twenty or more--I wouldn't know where to start. Anyone thining like me that they like earlier Jandek better? Of the ones that I've heard, I like mid-80s ones like Foreign Keys and Telegraph Melts best, and I have an earlier acoustic one that's pretty good, too. I haven't heard a new Jandek album since probably the early '90s.

Is that really his pic tho'?
Edited from the Biography section on Seth Tisue's site (I've also inserted the link to the Katy Vine piece he refers to):

So who is Jandek? No one knows for sure. He doesn’t perform live or give interviews; he has never made any public statement of any kind. The Katy Vine story above is the only documented encounter anyone’s had with the man in person. She must have done some detective work to track him down, but I suspect it was probably not all that hard. Jandek hides himself, but he hasn’t gone to extreme lengths to cover his tracks. After all, his picture is on his album covers.

Katy Vine reports that the man she talked to was the man pictured on the album covers, but he wouldn’t directly admit to having made the music, but the overwhelming impression from various details in the article is that in fact he had.

I personally believe that Jandek is Sterling Smith is the man depicted on the album covers is the man singing is the man playing the guitar.

Is Jandek Pop? (8 matching messages)

It's interesting how the goalposts moved, possibly *because* of Jandek (and Daniel Johnston, etc.). In the early 1980s, Jandek sounded like some kind of terrifying shut-in (the Forced Expsoure reviews played up the "outsider" thing). Now, post-Devendra, Cat Power, Palace and so on, it's just another style. Introversion is the new garage is the old hip-hop.

RFI: Jandek (6 matching messages)

A Guide to Jandek is very very useful, especially the album-by-album guide. Jandek's label Corwood does not have an official web presence, but a fan occasionally scans the catalogues and puts them up at www.corwood.com. They're cheap, too: $8 apiece, or I think $80 for a box of 20.
I own 12 or 15 of his records, and am occasionally in the very weird mood it takes to want to listen to them. Probably the best starting point is the first one, Ready for the House, where he lays out a lot of his basic themes and approach. "Nancy Sings" on Chair Beside a Window is actually pretty in a fragile cloistered folk-revival way. Opinions vary on his three most recent albums, the "a cappella/ dictaphone" ones, but I like "Killer Cats in the Caribbean" on the second one. I'm told that Telegraph Melts is his best, but I haven't heard it.

Does anybody like Jandek? (3 matching messages)

I mentioned in another Jandek thread here that I had contacted Jandek about potentially using some of his music in a film that I ended up not making. He sent me a letter explaining that he doesn't mind people using his music as long as he is made aware of it and is credited, but that he does not want any money and will not meet with anyone or give interviews of any kind. This means two things: a) Mitsubishi, film studios, etc can probably use his work free of charge as much as they want but b) this leaves them open to all sorts of potential legal problems should things go wrong.

Please help me identify a Jandek song (2 matching messages)

Hi ILM,
First-time poster, long time reader.
So I'm new to Jandek (quickly becoming a fan), and recently watched the Jandek on Corwood DVD. A song is featured in the soundtrack that, to my ears, is quite a bit more "melodic" and "accessible" than the rest of his output. The few lyrics I remember describe an encounter with a spirit in a house. Does this ring a bell for anyone? Thanks for your help.

Jandek: a 2-part question (2 matching messages)

1. First of all, is the boy on drugs?

2. Where can you easily spot his influence?

For my take on these 2 important questions, see below:

Yes, I believe the boy is or was on drugs, like most people who released their first album in 1978. I think he was perhaps on the most drugs of all. Or maybe he is just a shizophrenic manic depressive who dabbled in drugs a little bit. Or maybe, like Salvador Dali, he "is drugs". There is a connection between Jandek and drugs, for sure, some how some way. I think. Isn't there?

I can easily spot his influence in early Sonic Youth. That doesn't mean I'm right, but hey, I can say whatever I want, right, just like all other music authority types? Sure I can. And I say, Thurston Moore's been ripping off Jandek since he learned how to walk.

Jandek in London (1 matching message)

This is all from the Upset the Rhythm website:
The longest-running, weirdest, loneliest enigma in popular music is a guy from Houston, Texas who calls himself JANDEK. Since 1978, JANDEK has made some 42 albums of dissolute, atonal folk and blues for the mysterious CORWOOD INDUSTRIES label, which has put out nothing else but JANDEK! For such a prolific, legendary musician, little is really known about the man - the first 26 years of his career passed without a live performance or an official interview. In 2004, however, that partially changed with the release of the "JANDEK ON CORWOOD" documentary film and his first ever performance at the INSTAL 04 festival in Glasgow. Since then, JANDEK has made a handful of skirmishes into the live arena in Scotland and the US and is returning to the UK again in October for INSTAL 05 and this, his London debut and 8th ever live performance!

CHIE MUKAI first picked up an Er-hu (a traditional 2 stringed Chinese violin, of somewhat rebellious tonalities) in the late 1970's. Working with this instrument and its Japanese cousin, the Kokyu, MUKAI has developed into one of the key figures in the Japanese underground, with a signature sound of elongated and momentous, slowly shifting drones and dream psych-folk improvisations, often offset by tremulous vocals. MUKAI is also performing at INSTAL 05 and, again, this will be her London debut.

Our sincerest thanks and warmest wishes go to Barry Esson and the INSTAL 05 festival for making this show a possibility. We are overwhelmed that they asked us to be involved - THANK YOU!

ST GILES-IN-THE-FIELDS is a traditional Anglican church in the heart of London. Found at the junction of Denmark Street and St Giles High Street, it is just opposite the 12 Bar Club and a 2 minute walk from Tottenham Court Road tube. Here's a map!

What band would you say puts forth the most completely hopeless view of life (possibly, also, which band was most successful at it)? (4 matching messages)

Roger Waters usually injects some hopeful bit in somewhere ("Pigs on the Wing", "Outside the Wall", "The Tide Is Turning", etc.), though it's a bit hard to find on The Final Cut -- perhaps there's a bit in the title track.
Jandek is definitely the answer, I think -- mostly towards the beginning (Ready For the House) and most recent part (I Threw You Away) of his career, as there are some lighter moments partway through (on Lost Cause, for one, and the electric albums like Telegraph Melts don't seem too hopeless to me). The sheer concentration of hopelessness in every aspect of those albums outstrips anything else I've heard (though Low's Songs for a Dead Pilot comes close: I wonder if that album was at all inspired by Jandek?).

A reclusive musician from Houston, Jandek has never performed in public, That individual would come to be more commonly known as Jandek, Until recently, Jandek embodied obscurity: forty albums, Jandek is a reclusive musician living somewhere in Houston. Nothing is publicly known , Great news for the ninny fans of outsider music: Famously reclusive Texas musician Jandek, Surely most of those who post and read here already know that Jandek buys women's underwear at Target, Jandek is an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, mounted on a spindle that sticks from his rectum, Jandek is a mysterious Houston "recording artist" who has been self-releasing albums since 1978, some call him a genius, many just call him late for dinner, drop everything you're doing and go buy Jandek music, I've never been able to listen to a Jandek album all the way through which makes him perfect, Jandek was a recovering psychiatric patient, secretly a cross-dresser and a Christian, Poor Jandek: all he wants is to spend his whole life recording incomprehensible, amateurish music,
this is Jandek’s most rocking set to date and there are moments here of such vulcanism you'll put away your AC/DC records, Spin magazine proclaimed Jandek as one of the ten most interesting musicians in the universe, I had a 3 second look at Jandek, he grew a beard, that's awesome, Jandek is one talent not to be trifled with, Jandek is a recording artist around who has developed somewhat of a Jandek, do you want to eat acid before we go see Jandek?

Clearly, the best Jandek song is (1 matching message)
"European Jewel (Incomplete)" - it's perfect. I love the guitars - it's more structured and "pop" than what he usually plays, and there's this recurring motif that is so creepy/scary/cool that it drives me nuts. Great lyrics, and the abrupt ending is perfect. Best Janky song ever!

What makes coFlow "avant-garde"? (1 matching message)
Like this is where you talk about what makes the beats good and why the dissonance is avant-garde boundary pushing consciousness-expanding dissonance instead of (or along with being) headache-inducing dissonance and hell even why the echo-laden janky vocals call into question the role and construction of narrative, etc.

Obnoxious french goth rat in bitter job/edge-losing shock-a-shizzlePNATS. I sort of agree with him, is the worst part.

Bright Eyes: Worth a damn? (1 matching message)
Something did just occur to me, though. Bright Eyes does have a track on the Jandek tribute album (curious release on the whole but still worthy), and much of Andy's description of that one album's qualities seems to suit Jandek more in my ears, though I had never drawn the exact comparison/connection before. It certainly helps that ol' Janky has got that mega-mystique for him going, though, whereas my one encounter with Bright Eyes live from about six feet's distance made me think "Godspeed you Emo Emperor! Only very *pweciously* so."
-- Ned Raggett (ne...), February 20th, 2002.

Miles Davis - In A Silent Way (1 matching message)
i don't think anyone has mentioned "circle in the round" yet which is my all-time favorite Miles track, and maybe my favorite jazz recording of all time. It's an amazing, hypnotic, droney, repetetive haunting groove for about 30 minutes. Tony Williams' drumming is stellar, tugging the rhythm in some very unexpected directions. there's lots of extra chimes and percussion making things sound janky in the right places. the central melody sounds like it could be from a krzysztof komeda polanski score, but it's more catchy. it's a tremendous record to listen to.
I was actually going to post asking if anyone had some recommendations for something similar to that one, as i've still never heard anything else like it. "tauhid" by pharaoh sanders maybe comes close. doesn't need to be jazz, i just have a craving for that kind of dark, extended motif.

Jay Dee a.k.a. Dilla a.k.a. James Yancey - c/d (1 matching message)
trife, i just downloaded a few obie trice tracks. i know how hard you're feeling this, so i'd suggest tracking down the Frank-n-Dank album "48 Hrs". it's a totally janky cdr type shit (no cd art and a blurry-photo one sided cover), but it's kinda in the same dark synthy territory as "Adrenaline Rush"
here's a clip from the BBE album with them on it Pause

here's a very typical type production of his also from the BBE album. slow, lazy sounding (but completely methodical) beat. heavy off beat bass programming and some really nice airy, filtered, jazzy samples on top Come Get It
