"Get Up! Make A Buck!" (A gratuitous Fall thread in disguise)

Today on the way to work I tried to imagine what life would be like without there being a song** where someone had yelled "Get Up! Make A Buck!" in that Mark E. Smithsian way. I simply couldn't conceive of such a universe existing.

**the song is "What You Need", (indeed!), fact fans.

And I simply can't understand people who don't like the Fall. I think there must be something wrong in their DNA. Wonderful, lovely, people, but just that one little thing is a bit off. A shame, really. I actually find it easier to accept it when folks don't like some bands that I hold dearer than the Fall, but for some reason to not like the Fall is just unfathomable for me.

Somehow I had a feeling the first comment would be snarky. Well done!

It could've been worse. I could've said that "something wrong in their DNA" = having all our chromosomes. Fathom that, whydon't'cha.

I'm afraid I can't, for it doesn't make sense. But thanks for playing!

Glowingly useful comments like that are why you're missed.

.. and then they talk a lotta wind-ah...

We know how you feel about people who listen to the Fall and don't like them, but what about people who don't like them yet because they're too intimidated by the insano catalogue the band has to really start anywhere?

Take the plunge.

I think that many of the people who don't like The Fall don't 'get' them; they think that they are embarked on a mission to deliberately sabotage their music, as if they are people who can play properly but simply don't.

The Fall always choose interesting records to cover. The Spiderwebbed Wilderness, maybe you should do a mixtape of Fall cover versions and play that to some of your mates.

This thread has turned out rather chuckle-worthy. Thanks to all.

You're right, they're very crafty with those cover versions aren't they? Lead people like lambs to the slaughter with those. That's a good idea. At least the person who's mind I'm attempting to open said he might like the early singles, so we'll see.

And yes I do sympathize with being dumbstruck at the size of their discography. I said recently on a Hawkwind thread I felt the same about that band. But it's also true that one needs to just jump in somewhere eventually, and I'm halfway wondering if the nearest music- selling establishment has that Hawkwind CD right now. With the Fall, anything pre-1990 is a good place to start as far as I'm concerned. No need to worry too much about picking the wrong thing.

Every day when I get off at the Rector St. subway stop, the phrase "Spectre vs. Rector" pops into my head. It's actually slightly annoying.

Nice disguise. Fucking weak.

Maybe the reason people are reluctant has to do with the insularity that Fall fandom seems to inspire, not to mention the way the band's partisans have of going into autopilot "If you haven't heard everything you haven't heard anything" mode. Those things took me a lot of time to overcome, and I'm glad I did, but Jesus do posts like the one that started this off make it difficult to try to convince anyone otherwise. There are LOTS of good reasons not to like everything in the damn world! Going "Man, they just are the bestest thing in the universe. Yep, there just isn't anything better, mmm-hmmm! And by the way--they're the greatest!" isn't even an argument.

(Another reason Douglas W's Believer thing on the Fall Peel Sessions box was so valuable: Explicit and concrete reasons that this is an interesting band worth losing yourself in, rather than regurgitations of cult-of-personality stuff.)

Yeah, and Dave Matthews is awesome and you guys probably like good charlotte or rap or something. Get a life!

whoa! attack of the google monsters!

But how'm I supposed to get that cushy job with the LA Times if I *don't* practice that? *cries*
