T/S: Coldplay's "Fix You" vs Kenickie's "I Will Fix You"

Can't find Kenickie's lyrics, online, but my recollection is that they're sad and quite brilliant. Coldplay's on t'other hand, are mawkish and trite, shocker. And the songs? Well?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 6 August 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

Let's try and keep it that no-one who posts an opinion on this thread has heard the Coldplay track ever.

KENICKIE WIN

kit brash (kit brash), Saturday, 6 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

sadly it's more likely to be the other way round innit. poor kenickie, never got the props they deserved.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 6 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

I haven't heard this Kenickie song, but Kenickie win.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

It's by no means Kenickie's best tune, but it still beats the wack ass Coldplay into a (small) cocked hat.

Stew (stew s), Saturday, 6 August 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

"I Would Fix You" is one of my favourite Kenickie tunes. I love it. Anyone else have Lauren Laverne's solo EP - it's along similar lines. I have one of the Rosita EPs too, it's rather good.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Saturday, 6 August 2005 17:00 (twenty years ago)

easiest t/s ever. kenickers win by a margin so large it cannot be measured by ordinary measuring equipment.

I'm in pieces,
Does no-one see it?
I am stronger on the outside,
It’s easy when you know why.

This feeling sad,
It's not so bad.
I've got friends who lift my spirits,
I've got songs that no-one hears.

Sometimes the sun shines on unkind people,
And some nights the spotlight’s on shy people.
People like you.
These things are hard to think about,
You've been broken too,
Haven't you?
I would fix you.

Sick this morning;
Friends say it's a warning.
But they don't understand,
They don’t feel bad.

The sun was hot,
The day was long.
The best day we had in ages,
Everybody there was saying.

Sometimes the sun shines on unkind people,
And some nights the spot light's on shy people.
People like you.
These things are hard to think about,
You've been broken too,
Haven’t you?
I would fix you.

Life is stressful,
When you’re successful.
I am here to take it out of,
I am strong to break your fists on.
But I don’t mind,
It’s summertime.
Its enough to keep me smiling,
Let me be your ray of sunshine.

(x4)
Don’t stand still,
Don’t cry,
Don’t drop your hands,
Don’t break your stride.

Sometimes the sun shines on unkind people,
And some nights the spot light's on shy people,
People like you.
These things are hard to think about.
I've been broken too.
Haven’t you?

"Get In" is a wonderful album, but I'd take "5am" and "Weeknights" over this track.

I've read speculation that "Stay In The Sun" was a dig at Bob Stanley for the way he treated them. Surely not. I can't imagine a bunch of Wearside teens ever being sarky.

chris j (chris j), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

"I Would Fix You" is possibly the crowning achievement of 90s Brit indie. It is catchy and emotionally affecting.

It is also quite a bit shorter than "Fix You".

edward o (edwardo), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

kenickie never got the props they deserved? every anglophile indie boy i've ever known has had a MAD crush on lauren laverne.

the goulash archipelago (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 7 August 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else have Lauren Laverne's solo EP

no, but I'd be glad to take it off the hands of anyone who does.

kit brash (kit brash), Sunday, 7 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Kenickie! The harmonies in this song are gorgeous. Coldplay are just dull dull dull

>I'd take "5am" and "Weeknights" over this track.

I love "Weeknights", but maybe wouldn't go that far!

Any more to that story, or is that all you know?

Anyone know what happened to Marie and Emmy-Kate? Is there another J Xaverre record on the way. These Acid Stars is quite good (especially
"Great All Great"), but not as good as i'd hope. Still worth picking up if it's cheap.

Michael Lambert (Michael Lambert), Sunday, 7 August 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

Any more to that story, or is that all you know?

on Kenickie Corner - total bollocks probably

chris j (chris j), Sunday, 7 August 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

emmy kate was in a band called the pictures after rosita split but i don't think they went anywhere much..

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Sunday, 7 August 2005 22:09 (twenty years ago)

oh shit this Coldplay song is on telly right now, it is FUCKING HORRIBLE why did Kenickie not beocme the most popular band in the world ever?

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 12 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

During one part of it, the Coldplay song sounds like a wimpy version of "Where Is My Mind?" by the Pixies.

Still doesn't make it good, though.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

I am strong to break your fists on.

*sigh* *goes off to play Kenickie collection again*

I really wish Lauren had recorded the songs that she played when she was touring that EP. "untitled / Ian" had the potential to be a lovely ballad, and all I have is a shitty 32kbps MP3 taped off a Radio Ayr session of all things…

I think Emmy-Kate is at university now, and isn't Marie working for a PR firm in London?

carson dial (carson dial), Friday, 12 August 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Yep - Kenickie always win. I would fix you is one of the greatest songs I've ever heard, although, not as good as fellow album track psychic defence or And that's Why...

As for J Xaverre - I'm doind his official website www.jxaverre.co.uk - he's got an expected release sometime in the autumn/winter. that's all I can say at the mo!

the real kenickie, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

you bastards

chris wrote that for gwynnie after her dad died

hasn't anyone one on ilm got a shred of humanity, decency or respect?

i heart coldplay and anyone who says their songs are nice, bland, unadventurous, cheap emotional pornography for people who don't like music very much should log off their computers RIGHT NOW and go and take a good long look in the mirror

i hope you're all ashamed of yourselves

john clarkson, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:49 (twenty years ago)

my brother is right.

Kelly Clarkson, Tuesday, 20 September 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

Avril Lavigne wrote a song for her grand-dad when he died, and it was crap. It's not a defence if you reckon it's a bad song. Fix You is alright by Coldplay's standards, but that ain't saying much. I'm sorry John, but some people have different opinions and are entitled to them.

Plus Chris Martin's attempts at high notes is so disturbing that it should be adopted as some sort of siren to warn people of imminent nuclear attack, as opposed to the rather 50s-esque Protect and Survive effort. Every time it's on the radio I'm terrified that a pack of wild dogs are going to run to my house.

Kenickie win. Easily.

Still John, you can console yourself with the fact that Coldplay are raking in millions with their tedious, MOR pop while the God-like Kenickie have now become a London radio DJ and ... well God knows what happened to the others.

Damn you public.

The Famous Clydebank FC, Sunday, 25 September 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

I have a three-track (I think) promo copy of the Lauren Laverne solo single. It's lovely, especially "To Have A Home".

Was there more than one Rosita record?

Rev. Stu, Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

Blimey Doncaster seems to be getting a bit famous lately, cropping up everywhere. I'm from there too. I've never wanted to glorify it previously but..

Anyway, the idea that Coldplay could ever match the brilliance of Kenickie seems utterly absurd. The lyrics to I Would Fix You are clearly a fine composition which has far less annoying pretentiousness of the Coldplay son of a similar name. Another handy thing is you can tell Kenickie songs apart and as such can remember the tune to I Will Fix You. A beautiful song, superbly performed. Must get on to Lauren again about her doing some more music..

Derek Williams, Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

Was there more than one Rosita record?

there were two rosita singles and a third one that never made it past the demo stage

jimmy glass (electricsound), Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

What was the other Rosita single? (I only knew about "Santa Poca's Dream".)

Rev. Stu, Monday, 26 September 2005 07:17 (twenty years ago)

i do have lauren solo e.p.; it's a promotional copy not for sale.
good stuff. not brilliant as kenickie's second album though.

hub, Monday, 26 September 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

the other one was "live it down", a 45 on For Us. there was also the song "sugar" on a fierce panda 6 band thingy

jimmy glass (electricsound), Monday, 26 September 2005 08:07 (twenty years ago)

They (Rosita) also did an Evening Session, consisting of "Around The Town", "Live It Down", and "This Is Tonight". Oh, and Lauren also did a session with her Bastard Bastard Harbour Master backing band around the same time (which was "Don't Falter", "Thank You", and a gorgeous cover of James Taylor's "Mexico").

carson dial (carson dial), Monday, 26 September 2005 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Also. the Fierce Panda EP thingy was "Otter Than July", according to my hard drive.

carson dial (carson dial), Monday, 26 September 2005 11:13 (twenty years ago)

if my memory serves, said ep also contained a particularly fantastic song by Hofman

jimmy glass (electricsound), Monday, 26 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

i have a spare copy of the lauren ep.

Shooz (shooz), Monday, 26 September 2005 11:32 (twenty years ago)
