Recommend to me a good, small stereo.

I need a small-ish stereo for my room. Any recommendations? Ideally, I'd get a Bose Wave, but shit's too expensive.

I really don't think the sound quality is entirely worth it, either. As an ex-employee, by the by.

Cambridge Soundworks does a passable approximation of the Wave radio, and if you're stuck on that idea, but how sold are you on the idea of a bookshelf system?

Pretty sold, I guess. Easier to move around (been moving a lot, lately), generally cheaper. I don't fancy disk changers or anything.

I am, however, completely open to all recommendations, bookshelf or not. Quality is important, but so is price.

OR: I suppose I could just use my laptop as cd player. Speaker recommendations?

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 7 August 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

well you'd need an amp for that too so maybe an intergrated system is the way to go. Denon do a good compact system (my friend has it) but i can't find it on their website so maybe they have stopped doing it.

First: sorry for the terrible grammar. Two sentences collided into one disgusting mess.

I've done some installs of mid-range JBL equipment and they usually sound great for the (relatively little) money. They're not sexy, and they don't have the official audiogeek endorsement, but they're usually great workhorse equipment.

If you decide to look at minisystems, the best advice I can give is to go into tweeter or best buy or one of those places and screw around with the various floor models to find out what features are beneficial to you. Under $200ish you're going to find a fairly similar sound quality (albeit w. different quirks) from unit to unit, I think.

I think jed's got the right idea abt. an integrated system. And I suggest looking at slightly used amps: there are often excellent resale rates on 'like-new' condition equip.

'You get what you pay for' is so true when it comes to speaker quality. Not a hardcore audiophile. Can't afford it. But I do have a fair, impressive system after much research.

Despite what you think or have heard about the Wave radio, i have an original for the bedroom that still looks, works and sounds fantastic. Key is, it doesn't have the cd player built into it. The cd player knocks out a lot of the inner speaker space from the radio, so the sound loses its punch.

I would suggest looking around online to find one of these older Wave models without the cd player in it -- maybe even one that's still in the box, or even near-new. You can plug an ipod or any other source right in the back, and trust me, it approximates clear highs and lows to an astonishing degree.

If you can find one for less than $200 (and maybe even with a 30 day guarantee so you can try it) I would bet you'd be spending your money way more wisely than on some kind of Sony or other portable unit.

H'm. Are you sure I'd need an amp for computer speakers? I've got an Apple laptop and those Harmon/Kardon sound sticks seem like a good pickup. No mention of amps.

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 7 August 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

At that price and quality range I would say going with the laptop is probably a good idea. Just buy some powered computer speakers so you won't need an amp. There are tons of options to choose from. The Apple store for example seems to have all of the sleek white or silver models up on their site:

I could be convinced to pay 250 if I knew I was getting something kick-ass...

"A Good, Small Stereo" sounds like the title of a Raymond Carver short story.

...some I'm on eBay and someone is selling information on how to get stereos, electronics, etc, for free.

Anyone heard of this?

giboyeux (skowly), Monday, 8 August 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Here's my reasoning on the going the laptop direction. With one of these compact all-in-one units at a price point of $250, you're paying for the CD transport, the digital to analog converter, whatever kind of display is on there, a remote, a fancy case, the speakers and the amp. If you use your laptop you already have the CD transport and the built in DA converter is at least as good as any of these mini units. So your $250 is going directly into the speakers and the amp (built into the powered speakers) and you'll possibly wind up with something that sounds better than an equally priced all in one unit.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 8 August 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

selling information on how to get stereos, electronics, etc, for free

Act now and I'll sell you a free information kit on how to start your own business selling speakers out of a white van. In other words that sounds like a scam.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 8 August 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

but then your crappy apple laptop cd drive quits on you (as mine did recently) and you're in the shit. i'm not sure it's a good idea to give those things too much use just for playing.

xp

God, the speakers out of the van thing -- what's the deal with that racket? Does that happen everywhere? A couple guys going, "Hey man, we were supposed to deliver these and they gave us an extra pair -- $800 speakers, we'll give them to you for $200."

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 8 August 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

oooh, I want that Denon setup.

Yes it does! It's a classic scam. You're supposed to think you're getting a great deal buying stolen speakers that are worth $800 but you actually just bought a $100 pair of speakers for double the cost. I guess it appeals to a basic part of human nature much like the scam where someone buys a stolen laptop on the street only to find that they bought a box with a brick in it.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Monday, 8 August 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Helpful thread. Here's my situation: I've got $300 (and absolutely no more!) to spend. I was thinking about buying a stereo and receiver (I've got speakers). Would the money be better spent on good shelf system? I'm *completely* clueless about audiophile stuff, so any advice is appreciated.

D. Bachyrycz, Monday, 8 August 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

one year passes...
recommendations needed for a receiver! my receiver/amplifier (some kenwood monster with more shit on it than I needed) crapped out and makes horrible static noises at me now.

I need (or, rather, want):

BASIC home theater abilities (I don't actually use them, but might some day)
Optical input for dvd/CD (this seems to be hard to find all of a sudden? what the fuck is HDMI?)
built-in phono preamp (I don't need this, you can get one for $40, but it would be nice. Also seems to be hard to find)

actually I'm not terribly sure i need a home theater calibre reciever since I only use two of my speakers and the subwoofer if required. I have a center speaker for some reason hooking it up to the amplifier I have never worked...maybe it wanted another pair of side speakers? don't know. I do know that it's fucking hard to hear any dialogue in dvds half the time because either my player or the dvds themselves don't mix down to stereo very well.

I don't want to spend more than $350. I need a recommendation NOW.

well i bought this:

http://www.ecoustics.com/dt/3629

because it was the best thing I could afford. no phono input though, so I'll have to spring for a preamp, fuck it
