i'm not talking like overly orchestrated choral only things, more handclaps, maybe organ, singing but not in a harlem boys choir way. that really elated, wakes you right up on a sunday morn, mamma standin up shakin in the pew type.
p.s. ignore any racism you may see in this question, nothing of the sort implied, more like, i've seen haitian church services on the local pub. access channel and been kind of blown away, white church just doesn't do that for me

Oh wow my mother had this record when I was growing up called (I think) "The Mariners Sing Negro Spirituals" (talk about not PC nowadays) ... battered vinyl cover with a think a bunch of hands on a rope IIRC ... a capella and just one of those joyous wonderful records I'd love to track down. Hadn't thought of it in years. I'd love to track down music like this.

I suspect my mom's record is long outta print, google and amazon searches turn up nada.

This was old time, traditional music that puts me in the same emotional space as my old rocksteady compilation cassettes. More more!

er, meant to say vinyl, battered cover, not "battered vinyl cover" ... I was just so rhapsodized by the memory my brain shut off momentarily...

There are some fantastic compilations out there:

"Great Gospel Performers: Complete Recording Sessions in Chronological Order 1937-1950"
Tuomas: that one actually has four pieces sung by Mahalia Jackson-- from what she sounds like, I'd definitely say it's worth it to pick up "A Mighty Fortress"

also, I really like "The Gospel Tradition: The Roots and Branches Volume 1"... moving stuff

oh and Aretha Franklin's "Amazing Grace" is like my fantasy church service

also, when I worked the graveyard shift at a home for children with profound developmental disabilities I used to listen to gospel radio all night. One summer they played a song over & over whose title was obvious ("I'm Blessed") but I never got the artist's name. It is a huge bear trying to find a specific gospel song called "I'm blessed." Like trying to find a needle in a haystack...of needles. It was a live recording and opened with a monologue in which the male lead contrasts two parties on a Sunday: a well-dressed family on their way to church, and a wino. His point is that the wino may be closer to God, because while he "wasn't wearing fancy clothes. Wasn't on his way to church!" the narrator "...heard him say: 'I'm blessed.'" At this point a mass choir kicks in with the chorus and it's so great that I can still hear it to this day: "IIIIIII'm blessed. IIIIII'm blessed. I've been blessed - kept - by goodness and mercy - thank God I'm blessed."

Anybody knows who this song is by please let me know, it's been bugging me since 1988

Got "Something to Think About" by the Rev. Charlie Jackson on my mind now, which is enough to inspire it's own thread.
