pdf (Phil Freeman), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Note: I kinda meant pre-sixties players, the fact that Pharoah Sanders or Herbie Hancock are alive at 65 isn't that surprising.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

ROY HAYNES

He's 80 and he looks like he's 50, it's nuts.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Does Les Paul count?

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

I got beat to the punch on Les Paul and Roy Haynes, but here are a couple more.

Teo Macero
Jim Hall

earlnash, Monday, 8 August 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

I guess all that snap crackle keeps you young, Jordan.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

Roy Haynes could kick my ass.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Hank Jones

Not Thaat Chuck, Monday, 8 August 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

For a while, Hurting, I thought you meant as a drummer, but now I think you mean in a fight.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

How legendary is Oscar Peterson? Ahmad Jamal?

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

I just saw McCoy Tyner last week, and he seemed to be in pretty good shape, but I guess he's not old enough for Tuomas.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:37 (twenty years ago)

xpost, Seriously. The man is all muscle.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

i always think that jazzmen seem to have surprisingly long lives considering the drugs and era they come from. Obviosuly, there are some exceptions, but I thinlk if you were to compare rock musicians to jazz ones, jazz ones on average live longer

Robin Goad (rgoad), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Could he go toe to toe with Iggy Pop?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Bobby Hutcherson

deej.., Monday, 8 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Drummers definitely seem to live/play the longest.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

Horace Silver?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

Blossom Dearie

ianinportland (ianinportland), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

k - I'd put my money on Haynes. Low center of gravity, tough to take down.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Wow, Horace Silver IS still alive. Which reminds me - Benny Golson.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Harold Land

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Johnny Griffin

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought Harold Land was dead tho?

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Dada), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

(I do know that there are one or two other drummers out there with the same name as Jordan)

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Pretty sure Harold Land is still alive, if not very active. A

And my mom has never held sung two notes in the same key in her life!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Also, Jimmy Cobb!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, it was a strange, failed joke.

Hurting (Hurting), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

He's kind of the Tommy/Marky Ramone equivalent for Kind Of Blue.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

Sam Rivers
Yusef Lateef

Jeff LeVine (Jeff LeVine), Monday, 8 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Wait, Jordan's mama is Abbey Lincoln?!!?

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

I really don't get this joke.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 8 August 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I didn't get it either, I was just running with it. You know, it's that old jazz thing- somebody makes a mistake, sometimes it's best to follow along.

k/l (Ken L), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, Brubeck is still alive. Clark Terry too.

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Monday, 8 August 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Chico Hamilton--83 and still playing.

In addition to about a dozen criminally underrated records as a bandleader, he's played with Duke Ellington,Count Basie, and Billie Holiday, he helped Gerry Mulligan form his legendary quintet in '52, and he discovered Eric Dolphy, Gabor Szabo, Larry Coryell, and Charles Lloyd.

Sean Howe (seanmhowe), Monday, 8 August 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

ornette coleman

buyabiznatch, Monday, 8 August 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 05:24 (twenty years ago)

isn't Philly Joe Jones still alive?

drumnjazz, Tuesday, 9 August 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Oscar Peterson is 80 now, but he seems to have disappeared out of all forms of media. Anyone know if hes still playing and how his health is? Any websites with this information would be great to have if possible.

jazzenthusiast, Monday, 15 August 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Helen Merrill.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 15 August 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

Too bad about Harold Land. Philly Joe Jones died a long time ago ('85 says AMG).

Louis Hayes is still around and playing great, though!

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 August 2005 14:59 (twenty years ago)

wow, Anita O'Day is still alive?

man, I saw her footage in that Newport '58 film recently. she was something--a *fine* woman. really gorgeous and just a little twisted-looking. and for my money, one of the great jazz singers, not to get all whitney balliett on everyone...

I guess now I need to check out Lucky Thompson's work.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Monday, 15 August 2005 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Tlön, Uqbar, Morbius Tertius (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

Race Against Rockism (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 18:55 (sixteen years ago)

And a good friend of Barry Harris!

Three Hundred Pounds of Almond Joy (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 17 April 2020 22:04 (six years ago)

Wuhan!! Got You All in Check (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 17 April 2020 22:44 (six years ago)

so with konitz gone, that leaves no living members of the “birth of the cool” sessions. an incredible loss.
