Am I wrong to like the drum sound on Husker Du's "Warehouse"?

Hart's snare especially. So high, so thin, so dry. Sounds like "pfft! pfft! pffft!" This is a nervous sound, a caffeiny frenetic sound. Odd, for what one supposes to have been a loud and noisy band in a live context.

The only precursor I can think of is Unknown Pleasures or something, where the gate and delay make it sound like Mr. Morris was hitting a stack of newspapers at the other end of a tunnel.

This drum sound also prominent on Flip Your Wig, yo.

yes, you are wrong.

one of the downsides of bob & grant taking over more of the production duties is that the guitars & drums sounded bleah, even if the vocals improved.

Well, of course you can't be "wrong" for what is simple personal preference; but yeah, Hart tuned his snare a little high for my tastes. But as someone who hated practically ALL 1987 recorded drum sounds that weren't sampled off old James Brown or Led Zeppelin records, my opinion's a little biased.

I hold the production on husker du records as the reason that no band should ever sign a 100% artistic control contract.

haha, they're called amphetamines.

seriously though, for the crime of willful and blatant disregard for the wellbeing of snare and kick recordings, i sentence Warehouse to a lifetime of retch-face reactions from...uh, me i guess.

80s = worst drum sounds ever

six years pass...

i've been listening to this a lot lately after 20 years of not. kinda agree with OP, i dig hart's odd style of drumming, esp.on she floated away.

80s = worst drum sounds ever

yeah (tho not sure that's the problem -- if there is one -- with the drums on warehouse).

what's the name for the production technique used on most drum-sounds in the 80s? ("gated," maybe)

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 29 October 2011 07:38 (fourteen years ago)

gated reverb

I like hart's style, but it's almost literally the same in every song, especially Warehouse

give this man a hi-hat for goodness sake.
