I have realized my life's goal...at least as a fan of music

I have been adrift for far too long...I have sailed the seas of indie and new acoustic, both of which still hold fond memories for me, and I hope to revist some day...but I have found my calling, my true purpose in life!

I shall, in systematic fashion, collect a large amount of hip hop and analyze to the most minute level possible the samples contained therein.

There is nothing terribly profound or original about this, but I have realized that this, more than most other things, will bring me enjoyment as a music fan.

I have spent the afternoon reading old threads re: old skool hip hop etc. I need a $30 - $40 starter, and am thinking either the Def Jam box or the Sugar Hill Box. Any other suggestions?

Off to break down some Jay Z albums! Woohoo!

My life's goal is to avoid you.

Your life thus becomes an unending loop, sampled from someone else's, richer life.

I think this has been done to death

Funny, I was just relistening to an mp3 of Steinski's "Jazz" (which a helpful ILMer sent to me) and thinking, "Damn! There's a BUNCH of great sampling/splicing in this!!!" I'm not sure how much greater my enjoyment would be to look at a catalogued list of:

Kool and the Gang - Jungle Boogie
Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love
Firesign Theater - Don't Crush That Dwarf

But... woohoo indeed! Have fun!

boy, tuesdays really bring out the glee in you fuckers, huh?

my two favorite unexpected sample discoveries:
- hearing the "ok children, what does it all mean?" sample from de la soul's first album in its original source, a WWII-era recording of a politician reading the newspaper to a group of children.
- the tiny piece of john cale's "ghost story" used in the avalanches' "avalanche rock".

oh man - my life's musical goal is listening to "genius of love" ASAP!

some guy on oink regularly makes self-compiled "Original Soul Samples" volumes from current hip hop tracks.

If you end up collecting the original sample sources you find in hip hop, you will end up with a fantastic record collection.

RAP IS BEST WHEN ITS LIKE A 500 PIECE PUZZLE TO BE CONSTRUCTED

I suggest listening to the Kleptones' album "A Night At The Hip-Hopera" (http://www.kleptones.com)for maximum sample-spotting madness.

Or "Paul's Boutique".

man, you new jacks don't even know. I started collecting in the early 90s when couldn't just like "go on the internet" and instantly know who sampled something. lots of legwork, duders, lots of legwork.

This is called "Digging in the Crates" and can be a bunch of fun and lead you to discover a lot of good music. It can also be pointless and expensive. Here is a site all about it.

This is probably as good a place as any to mention there's a new compilation of David Axelrod's Capitol-era material coming out on Blue Note.

Many thanks to the positive responses.

PB - Blow me.

Man I thought this thread was gonna be about having achieved your life's goal, not realising what it is, you fucking chump.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

Alright...I've seen three different responses

1) What a fucking tool. Go home.
2) Whatever.
3) That sounds fun, even though its been done HERE. and HERE. Enjoy.

So, to all of you who gave the first answer, I'm glad you're so down on shit.
To the second ones, indifference is a nice cocoon, isn't it?
To the third, thanks. I fired this off after getting really excited by some old skool hiphop threads, and I was looking forward to geeking out on record collecting in a new direction. Cheers.

Jesus. Where's the love?

And Sick - sorry about the misleading thread title. You fucking chump.

I'll start you off: 'Ice Ice baby' actually samples 'Under Pressure' by David Bowie & Queen.
