The Damned. They covered "Help."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Siouxsie and the Banshees. Two cover versions!

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:36 (twenty years ago)

CM Punk

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:37 (twenty years ago)

Actually, doing a cover version doesn't indicate anything, does it? I mean The Dickies, people! I refuse to believe that they were Moody Blues fans just because they covered Nights in White Satin.

I'm still right about the Banshees though.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Soft Boys

"... I mean The Dickies, people! I refuse to believe that they were Moody Blues fans just because they covered Nights in White Satin."

So you're saying The Dickies didn't actually like the Banana Splits?!?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

Soft Boys

that's somewhat stretching the definition of punk, methinks :)

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I'd bet most of them, even if they wouldn't admit it at the time....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

I'd have to imagine the Buzzcocks had a soft spot for the Beatles, but I'm purely projecting.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

man, I bet that lots of those dudes, just considering their age, had to have bought some beatles records when they were little kids....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

the Replacements

kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

bob stinson was a big yes fan.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

I don't really recall anyone having a bad thing to say about the Beatles....

PB, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

They're not technically a punk band, but there's a great Beavis and Butthead where they're watching a Blur video and Butthead says, apropos of nothing, "You know those asswipes the Beatles? Those dudes ruined music."

lencho, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

Frank Sinatra

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

er, wait. no he didn't. aargh. i'm going back to studying.

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

He liked the song "Something," no?

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Multi-xpost - Stewart, of course I'm not saying that the Dickies didn't like Banana Splits, you little stirrer, you. But covering a track by a band doesn't necessarily equate to a liking for said band. I picked the Dickies purely because of the amount of cover versions that they did.

Re: Sinatra - he did indeed like the song Something. Unfortunately, he thought it weas written by Lennon and McCartney, being the dickhead that he was.

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I don't really recall anyone having a bad thing to say about the Beatles....

Wha'bout "NO ELVIS, BEATLES OR THE ROLLING STONES IN 1977" by the Clash? And what about Glen Matlock being shown the door by the `Pistols for allegedly admitting to like the Beatles? And what about "One Down, Three to Go!" by the Meatmen? What about "I laughed when Lennon Got Shot!" in "Motown Junk" by the Manic Street Preachers?

Lots of band either loathe or claim to loathe the Beatles. To what end, I'm not sure.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

joe strummer was a beatles fan; there's a quote from him in one of those nme/uncut specials saying he was "devastated" when lennon died.

of course there's also "that phony beatlemania has bitten the dust!"

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

There's also Mott the Hoople, well David Bowie really: "And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones. We never got it off on that revolution stuff"

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Kurt Cobain

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Apparently he liked Björn Again as well.

liking the beatles and hating beatlemania is probably a good way to describe the way a lot of people on this board feel.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

cuz is right....I think dissing the Beatles at the time doesn't necessarily preclude having been a fan/secretly being a fan....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

"Multi-xpost - Stewart, of course I'm not saying that the Dickies didn't like Banana Splits, you little stirrer, you."

Hang on, I resent that remark - what do you mean "little stirrer"? I'll have you know I'm a bloody great big stirrer, thank you very much!

"But covering a track by a band doesn't necessarily equate to a liking for said band. I picked the Dickies purely because of the amount of cover versions that they did."

So you're saying The Dickies weren't necessarily fans of Black Sabbath, Simon & Garfunkel, Franz Gruber & Josef Mohr, PF Sloan / Barry McGuire and Gigantor either?!?

Joking aside 'though, I assume your original comment ("doing a cover version doesn't indicate anything, does it?) although absolutely correct, was actually made wrt The Damned, who really genuinely were / are Beatles fans fwiw. Quite apart from "Help" I've seen them cover "Daytripper" live several times.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

Stewart - yes, you're right about the Damned being Beatles fans (Sensible said this fairly early on, if my ever decreasing memory is anything to go by). With their 60's psychedelia fixation this is not really a surprise.

My original quote was actually directed at the general notion that doing a cover version indicates a liking for a particular band.In some cases it can indicate the opposite (and I think the Dickies and the Moody Blues may be a case in point.)

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:10 (twenty years ago)

franz ferdinand
they cover the beatles live

ilovefranz, Thursday, 11 August 2005 11:17 (twenty years ago)

I think dissing the Beatles at the time doesn't necessarily preclude having been a fan/secretly being a fan....

I interpret the Clash's anti-Beatles lines as being anti-hegemony and wanting new groups - such as, say, the Clash - to take their place.

Let us not forget the Dead Lennons, who were once mentioned in Cream but may or may not have actually existed.

mike a, Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

(Creem, duh)

mike a, Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

Wire? ........... I mean, who knows, Colin Newman did cover a Beatles' song.

Could have been worse; you could have said they were covered in Cream....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

as for the stones, i remember a quote from mick jagger who said he didn't understand why punks were dissin' them as he couldn't see how they could ever outpunk keith...
