Yeah, of COURSE Douglas making the indie connection w/ Sade intrigues me. I'm such a tool.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always found her TOO smooth. And a bit flat. Based on looks, of course, I'd buy all her albums 3 times over. I'm SUCH a tool.

"Coast to coast, LA to Chicago" - last I heard, Illinois wasn't on the East Coast.

Ah, but who cares...smoooooooooooooooooooooth.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i have the first 3 Sade albums on LP, and let me say they are excellent. Yeah, it's sometimes very close to the "smooth jazz" that they play on some bad radio stations, but she has a super voice. And the sound on all 3 albums is amazing. I really like her unadorned vocal style--some describe it as detached, overly cool, pseudo sophisticated, etc--but I see it as a very well conceived personal style that suits her talents. I think of her as similar to Astrud Gilberto, non-inflected style, tho Sade has a better voice technically speaking and she doesn't do bossa. Like Gilberto, she is a pop singer with jazzy inclinations, as opposed to a jazz singer with pop inclinations (like Blossom Dearie maybe for example)

Reminds me of that daft line in that Kim Wilde song. Kids In America?

helenfordsdale, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

She's completely awesome... the coolest girl in the world, and am I high or does she look better and better as the years roll by? Anybody heard the Beachwood Sparks cover on the new record? It sounds a bit like Kermit the Frog but it shows what a simple, universal song it is.

Andy, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think J. D. Considine spoke for me when the entirety of his review of Stronger Than Pride was 'Faster than Sominex.' I'll allow "Smooth Operator" but otherwise, I'd rather listen to Jobim/Gilberto straight up.

LOVER'S ROCK, while not normally my sorta thing, is pretty superb.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I know someone who's going to be getting an upload of _Stronger Than Pride_ later this week... I will not stand idly by while bad things are said about an album that has "To Turn My Back On You" on it.

Dan Perry, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You make it sound so...*dirty.*

You won't need to -- Karen is a Sade fanatic, f'r instance.

search: the sweetest taboo on the new live album that came out last week! andrew hale is the mack.

chaki, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dan is dead-on about "Turn My Back On You." Hint: play it LOUDLY. Hint #2: Sade has an actual band she's been playing with for close to 20 years now.

Douglas, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Of COURSE she does!! She is like the seasons. Seattle metal, acid house, Tropicalia resurge... like water off a duck's back. She decides she's into soul reggae, but in the most oblique way thinkable.

What's "the indie connection"? I think I'm missing it.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

So has Bruce Springsteen. Hasn't made me love HIM any more than usual, ie not very. ;-)

Been watching that '94 live DVD lately. Irresistible.

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:41 (seventeen years ago)

The video for ' Love is Stronger than Pride' has aged extremely well(You can't say that about a lot of music vids made in the 80s). Saw it on VH1 recently and it still looks fabulous. And the song is as haunting as ever. DAMN she's smoove...

Christyles, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

that Beachwood Sparks cover of 'by my side' that andy mentions above still slays me every time

stevie, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 13:37 (seventeen years ago)

Hmm. I can't remember what the video for Love Is Stronger Than Pride looks like. I'll have to get me some You Tube.

The 1994 Live video is really something, innit? Some asshole I knew stole it from me once and I had a fit. I bought a new one and taped a note to it "If you steal this I will hound you to your grave" or some such.

Bimble, Thursday, 9 August 2007 04:54 (seventeen years ago)

Okay watching this thing on You Tube, I don't remember that video for Stronger Than Pride at all. How can this be? And how can she possibly BE that beautiful? I've always been in awe of her beauty and greatly humbled by it. It has no bearing on the music at all, of course, which only makes it more striking. It's like yeah, you get this marvelous music, but you also get to look at her while you're at it. Indeed HOW could she be that beautiful? It's not like they hired her to look pretty for someone *else's* music video, you know?

There's one thing that gets me about the video for "Never As Good as the First Time":
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfzmVUrZplw

It's the one where she's riding a horse. I've always thought it was clever how the first few shots entertain the possibility that she's not really riding the horse - that a double is on the horse, or the horse is on the back of a van or something - but then, paf, she's riding a horse. The video has other shots but it could be just four minutes of Sade riding a horse and I would be happy.

There's a game called Lone Sails where you drive a train left-to-right across the countryside. Someone should make a game in which Sade rides from right-to-left on a horse, then a motorbike, then a dolphin, then a horse again, but a bigger horse. That would be awesome.

The top google link for "sade riding a horse" is that video. And "Soldier of Love", in which she also rides a horse. And also "Sweetest Taboo" where she also rides a horse. If her music career tanks - perhaps she gets an ear infection that interferes with her balance - she could always do a TV show in which she talks about horses. Wouldn't have to ride them.
