Dunno if this is anywhere near top tier, but (so far) as a collection of songs recorded and sequenced, it’s at least easy to listen through without wincing hard/skipping through/eyes rolling out of my head. It’s been a really long time since a M.I.A. album accomplished that for me as a listener.

She cites the example of the movement to defund the police in the US, suggesting that this will cause poverty and hardship. “Even [with] the police force, who we’re supposed to not like, you had people losing their livelihoods and losing their jobs and can’t pay rent, families losing their houses because they’re threatened with this choice of following orders or not following orders,” she says. “That is actually really happening on our doorstep, like this is not happening in Sri Lanka, this is happening in the west, this is happening in your neighbourhood.”

― Bee OK, Saturday, 15 October 2022 04:24 (three years ago)
I agree with the consensus, it's a good M.I.A. record with some classic M.I.A. bangers. Sometimes too obvious or redundant, but at least there's no track called "Lab Leak Theory" or anything. My son actually put it on in the car this morning, I wasn't even aware it was out. It's funny, he loved M.I.A. and "Bird Flu" in particular when he was like 3. But he's only recently circled back around to her, he thinks she's interesting. We both thought it was pretty good.

probably a cynical take but her revolutionary politics were a bit of window dressing and it was always a con, she was never a deep thinker, she was always an idiot, just absolutely a lunkhead. she dispensed with all her supposed philosophies and threw in with the other side as soon as she recognized no one was paying attention to her anymore.
