They don't seem like a very well-matched pair -- one all glitzy, faux- Punk and hip-hoppy tough girl shtick and the other all dowdy, sad-eyed and melancholly. It seems Pink would mop the floor with her in hand to hand combat. In terms of vocal ability, I'd say Dido's got her in the talent department.

Surely these descriptions are interchangeable with regard to both of them, yes?

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Pink Pink Pink Pink Pink Pink Pink Pink Pink

(and I don't even like her that much!)

Robin Carmody, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pink = punk and dido = dodo HAH!

But D's contrib to 'Stan' and 'Roswell High' are deathless nevahtheless. Also her brother was in the WoodentopZoR.

mark s, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Alizee!

jel, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned in what curious Nedworld is Dido a hip-hoppy faux-punk tough girl?

Tom, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You always have to beware the quiet types.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It all depends on how Dido wants to thank me.

JM, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think her gift is her song.

Sterling Clover, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is this a joke? is there any competition? PINK!!!! i want her to have my babies.

di, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

tickle my toes Pink any day of the week!

Arien, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lame.

JM, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Get the Party Started" (which roolz!) is the only song that does get the party started on that Pink album. Rest is whiny Al@n#s-type blather, not the "glitzy" sass Pink's image wd suggest. And those whiny songs are all written by Linda Perry, the whiner from 4-Non-Blondes. Feh! Ptooey! Plus there's a rancid spoo of a Steven Tyler duet, sounds like "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" except worse, slower, and aptly called "Misery". Dildo wins by default.

AP, Tuesday, 12 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Family Portrait" is the best song I've heard so far this year.

Note to MS: Rollo of Faithless - I don't THINK he's the same Rolo McGinty wot was in the Woodentops (but was Alice Thompson out of the WTs the same one who now tories away in the Telegraph?).

Marcello Carlin, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hey, there's a good idea...someone should send me Woodentops MP3s, esp. "Stop This Car"! Thanks!

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello: Pink sez she can't listen to "Family Portrait" b/c its too personal and emotional.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"to tory" should surely be a verb!

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely these descriptions are interchangeable with regard to both of them, yes?

Crack kills, Ned.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, think of it this way -- Pink hangs out with Linda Perry, Dido with Eminem. Now who's the badass and who's the wistful sop?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

L.A. Reid tho?

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"My Vietnam" sounds just as awful, but also eerily preescent and like it would fit SOMEBODY'S mood (not mine) post s11.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, think of it this way -- Pink hangs out with Linda Perry, Dido with Eminem. Now who's the badass and who's the wistful sop?

If you follow the "Any given celebrity pair will have a badass and a wistful sop" rule, I would have to say that Pink is the badass and Dido is the wistful sop. Furthermore, they are destined to duet.

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Rolo from the Woodentops is also one man techno outfit called Pluto.....'94/'95 really not bad, I think I saw at Megatripoliso once, it was ace...

Pink rulez 'cos she looks dirty...

nik, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Marcello they are not the same, I just like to say they are.

mark s, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

pink rules cos she looks like bret michaels back in the 80s.

di, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If you follow the "Any given celebrity pair will have a badass and a wistful sop" rule

Demonstrate how this applies to the Mackenzie Brothers.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're too drunk to be easily delineated. (This is a corollory(sp?) to the rule.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hm, touche. And I guess your original rule applies to C3PO and R2D2 as well.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I am the king of ass-covering.

Dan Perry, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm glad Marcello rose to the Woodentops bait this time, not me. Whatever happened to their rather good sleeve artist, Panny Charrington btw (maybe I just liked the name)?

I'm also glad that AP warned me off the Pink alb, 'cos 'Get The Party Started' sounds better every time I hear it on the radio (but not on TOTP strangely).

Dido = The Cranberries lite, god help us.

Andrew L, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Also be aware album version of "Get the Party Started" [whilst good] = less funky different mix to single. Totally cuntox when people do better versions of songs AFTER they've put the f'n album out. (Me = cranky.)

AP, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dido. Reason? I just heard "My Vietnam", which is the worst song written since the heyday of Four Non Blondes. Unsurprisingly, as the mastermind behind that particular holocaust is also involved in the Pink album, so extreme caution is merited in any case. "I fed the homeless, I'll never forget/ The look on their faces when I showed them respect" !!!

dave q, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave: then at all costs avoid the Melanie C track of a similar "ooh... look... homeless.. sad" theme.

Also keep in mind tho, that Pink did run anway from home and do the whole troubled homeless yoof thing for uh, a week?

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But Dido hangs with Eminem.

bnw, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but so does Elton John.

Andrew L, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ooh. Snap.

JM, Saturday, 16 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

five years pass...

Yesterday I signed into iTunes for the first time in a year or three. I clicked on ‘Check for Purchases’ and it downloaded Pink’s ‘Just Like a Pill’ which my ex-girlfriend must have tried downloading as she was always singing that silly song. I’m totally depressed now and writing on a messageboard.

Mr. Goodman, Saturday, 8 December 2007 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

I choose a pink dildo.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 8 December 2007 02:33 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha mr goodman.

Surmounter, Saturday, 8 December 2007 03:32 (seventeen years ago)

If you don't like "Just Like a Pill" then you fucking suck.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 December 2007 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

:( goodman

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

also i can't be the only person who keeps misreading this thread title as "pink vs. dildo" and assuming there's a pink sex tape.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Man, every Pink video is a sex tape.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 9 December 2007 16:55 (seventeen years ago)

Would have gone for Dido in 2002, but she gets boring after a while whereas Pink is still fun.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 9 December 2007 17:49 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

In the new video, she fucks herself. I mean, literally.

i, grey, Thursday, 11 December 2008 05:41 (sixteen years ago)

Which leads to the question: Would Dido fuck herself literally?

No. Pink wins.
