Bill Frisell - This Land / Have a Little Faith

rather than "Hand Jive," I'd go with one of Scofield's Blue Note albums with Joe Lovano (must've been one or two from the 90s, right?) or the one with Bill Frisell. Or the one inspired by Wayne Shorter. I guess what I'm saying is I don't buy Scofield's funky white boy routine much, but I like other things he does a lot.

Is the LMO's "Dream Keeper" from the 90s? If so, that's a good un.

Tone Dialing, maybe. Or the two Sound Museum CDs

Probably one of Don Byron's albums as leader; "Bug Music" is a blast.

I got on a kick to pick up some more recent jazz a few months back, so I got some Gregg Bendian, Dave Douglas, John Scofield and some ECM artists, but that stuff is either from the 80s or the 00s. I still want to check out some Ken Vandermark and Joe Lovano records, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

One cd I did pick up from the 90s that is pretty is Extensions by the Dave Holland Quartet.

Also: Interstellar Space by Cline/Bendian. That's 99, right?

Hi Haikunym! No, I haven't heard the new Kahil; I confess, I didn't even know he had a new one! He can be definitely tough to keep up with; he cranks them out. OK, some internet work reveals that it's got Billy Bang on it ... yeah, when Billy plays with that group -- that's always a plus. Billy rules! that real early Ritual Trio album with Billy, Another Kind of Groove on Sound Aspects, is totally totally great...

Parker plays the Zintir, Morris plays various banjo instruments, and Drake plays a frame drum. Amazing.

And I don't hate James Carter! I don't always like him...on some of his older albums there's a lot of grandstanding and sax tricks that get old, but I like Layin' in the Cut and the Django album. And he kills it on the first tune of the Kansas City soundtrack (but not as nice as Joshua Redman does).

Mel Rhyne - Mel's Spell (one of my favorite organ trio records possibly ever)

Another FANTASTIC album that popped in my head, nominate pls: Matt Wilson's As Wave Follows Wave (w/Dewey Redman, Cecil McBee, and Larry Goldings). Which also brings to mind Larry Goldings' Whatever It Takes (Peter Bernstein, Bill Stewart, Joshua Redman, Maceo Parker)!

I've never heard a Henry Threadgill record, apparently now's the time.

Yeah, Haikumyn is correkt, I'm not from Madison ... in fact, I'll be honest, I have only been to Wisonson thrice! Once to see Guns N Roses on the very first show of the Use Your Illusion tour! (think it was about a week b4 the albums were out; Skid Row opening, Alpine Valley, 1991), once to see my roommates band open up for the Thinking Fellers in Madison in like 1995, and also once to see Bailter Space in Milwaukee in 199 like 7 or 8, I think.. had an absolute blast each and every time!

I've also always been a big Brewer fan -- they're basically my NL team -- even B4 the trade for Carlos Lee, but since he was my fave White Sox player that just increased my Brew-crew fandom.

As far as Richard Davis goes .. just always been a fan of his bass playing ... and that Live at Sweet Basil thing on Evidence was on heavy, heavy rotation at my college radio station in the mid-90s. It just brings back fond memories. I used to hear the thing all the time. And I loved it. And that guy Ricky Ford is a really outstanding player. So I just wanted to give some props to some overlooked records and some personal faves...

And Southern Lights, yeah, you have to see Threadgill! It's amazing to watch his groups live. Bunch of folks you've frankly never heard of before, performing this exacting music brilliantly. He's a great bandleader and an inspiring guy. Too Much Sugar is definitely my 90s pick up there with Ask the Ages. For once, I'm GLAD to see consensus and overriding CANON emerging, I really am. Becuz those two guys are great and deserving. and Ornette's Tone Dialing needs to be given a second thought by everyone i think....
