Apparently Jack Lang is releasing a CD of various classic versions of "La Marseillaise", including Serge's rubbish reggae interpretation.

I think the French national anthem is CLASSIC beyond belief.

MARCHONS, LES CITOYENS!

Total classic. Its only competition is the Internationale, the old Soviet anthem, and the Mexican national anthem whose first line is: "Mexicans, to the cry of war!"

Only the second best song in Casablanca, but pretty damn unbeatable in any other context.

The Irish national anthem is pretty cool too. Like the French, it involves taking up arms against unspecified foreign invaders.

Dixie is a great national anthem too, although the lyrics aren't bloodcurdling enough.

I don't like national anthems of servility to the monarchy, but I don't much like aggressive warlike ones either.

Total classic. Every time I watch France play footie it amazes me how good it is. The bit at the end when it goes UP! is so uplifting. I reckon you're ready to play some class football after hearing that.

The French National Anthem is just a cover from Kid A, right? No, wait... I believe the French mislabeled the titles on their official minidisc compilation of Kid A and Amnesiac and mistakenly covered "Pull/Pulk Revolving Doors." Then again, I Might Be Wrong. Anyway, long live France... or something like that.

The Chilean one takes some beating. I find it fascinating that the French govt is promoting the Aux Armes Etc version of the anthem after what happened. In the late 70s that was little short of incendiary. There were questions in parliament and Serge became a cause celebre as he was hounded by both the establishment and the Front National. Fantastic irony.
