According to Wikipedia, that's Brecker in the shades on the right, playing the sax.

max (maxreax), Sunday, 14 January 2007 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 January 2007 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

808 the Bassking (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 14 January 2007 06:47 (nineteen years ago)

Dammit, never listened to his solo work a or the Brecker Bros, but he plays on so many of my favourite albums. RIP.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Sunday, 14 January 2007 10:08 (nineteen years ago)

bummer :-(

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Sunday, 14 January 2007 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

it is a bummer...from Laura Nyro to Blue Oyster Cult, nothing sweetened a track like a Brecker sax solo...RIP

hank (hank s), Sunday, 14 January 2007 10:45 (nineteen years ago)

wow RIP. "Some Skunk Funk" and "Sponge" were big players when I was a jazz band kid

Dominique (dleone), Sunday, 14 January 2007 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

wouldn't hurt if this thread's name got changed...

hank (hank s), Sunday, 14 January 2007 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i agree.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 14 January 2007 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

acid waffle house (dubplatestyle), Sunday, 14 January 2007 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone have a link to Brecker's highly amusing tour rider (or maybe it was just a great rant about the absurd things he encountered while touring over the years) (or maybe both)?

drench (drench), Sunday, 14 January 2007 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

got to see Brecker play a set by himself 6 or so years ago. remember "Naima" being the highlight, & it was pretty insane. rip.

eggzakly huhh? (zachary v.), Monday, 15 January 2007 06:41 (nineteen years ago)

Damn. RIP, dude. Must d/l "East River" and some Steps Ahead tonight.

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 15 January 2007 11:24 (nineteen years ago)

It's his brother Randy's rider, but yeah, it's pretty profound:

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

f. Please try and avoid having the whole audience come backstage for
autographs after the concert, especially when they haven't applauded during
the concert.

g. No, I do not have a pen!

h. Yes, my brother is fine!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

RIP.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 15 January 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

Damn - second session giant/unlikely Zappa guest-soloist to die within less than a week. He definitely got around - according to the discog, I apparently listened to him on two different LPs, unawares, during the weekend. RIP

M. Agony Von Bontee (M. Agony Von Bontee), Monday, 15 January 2007 16:23 (nineteen years ago)

who's the other zappa soloist to pass away? michael played on some great records. RIP.

edd s hurt (ddduncan), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Sad, and way too early.

I first and foremost remember him as an excellent session player. His solo on "Still Crazy After All These Years" is one of the classic sax solos.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 23:10 (nineteen years ago)

I feel like I should say something about his non-Skunk Funk/session side, since he did some pretty serious straight-ahead stuff. I know a few musicians who were way into that album he did with Jeff "Tain" Watts and Joey Calderazzo, and the Herbie Hancock/Brian Blade/John Pattitucci/Roy Hargrove band was nothing to sneeze at either.

I hear he was a pretty good drummer too!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 23:28 (nineteen years ago)

That was "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow, Edd. (Played on Waka Jawaka from '72.)

Monty Von Byonga (Monty Von Byonga), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

I've always enjoyed the image, from Dave Marsh's first Springsteen book, of Steve Van Zandt *singing* the horn parts for "Tenth Avenue Freeze Out" to the session guys, who included Michael and Randy.

A Radio Picture (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 06:57 (nineteen years ago)

six years pass...

"Beirut" on the second Steps Ahead record, Magnetic, is pretty amazing. Definitely the best synth wind controller stuff I ever heard.
