DJ Kicks vs. Back to Mine!

I think I'd probably have to give this to DJ Kicks, but the Richard X and Chris Lowe editions of Back to Mine pretty much rule harder than any other release from either series, says I.

Pet Shop Boys!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

As far as the Pet Shop Boys go... I can't say enough about the Chris Lowe disc for Back to Mine, but to be honest I just haven't really listened much to the Neil Tennant one yet.... short attention span and all that. Plus the Chris Lowe one is right up my ally.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

I mean, the Mr. Flaggio track, the Flirts track, and the Justice vs. Simian track are some of the best things I've heard in a long time (the Celestial Choir track is really good too, but I'd heard it on the KIM album (from Tigersushi) already, so it doesn't count as an introduction).

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

That Flirts track is the pulsating love-muscle at the center of the universe.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

The Pet Shop Boys really impressed me with their back to mine. The Chris Lowe has savage,Mr Flagio, Klein & Mbo,and the Flirts. I've fallen in love with italo disco again.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:06 (twenty years ago)

I love it that Chris Lowe proves as excellent an italo tastemaker/curator as someone like Morgan Geist. As it should be!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

i am disturbed by how many back to mine's i have enjoyed.

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 22 August 2005 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Yeah.

I think DJ:Kicks is mostly rubbish, isn't it?

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

Which other back to mine are good

Jacobs (LolVStein), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

I saw the Bobby O version of 'West End Girls' the other day, but fools were charging $20!
(er, if it's worth that much let me know and I'll make a return trip, but otherwise I'll hold out)

Anyone know much about the Justice vs. Simian track? It seems like the kind of thing that should have been pretty big in some circles, but I'd never heard (of) it until this comp.

(PS... still made off with cool records the other day... a different Flirts single, some stuff by Night Force, Fun Fun, Robert Gorl, Flexx, and so forth... some gambles in $1 bins... plus I found a place in Seattle that carries the Alan Braxe comp!)

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

now's the part where I admit that I haven't really heard *that* much out of either series, but the DJ Kicks stuff seemed a little thicker (more tracks, etc.) and I thought the Back to Mine editions I liked so much were more the exception than the rule... but maybe not?

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

(actually the two DJ Kicks albums I know well are the Tiga one and the Playgroup one)

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

the rich x back to mine ended up being one of my favorite records of 2004 in retrospect

strng hlkngtn, Monday, 22 August 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

The Glimmers DJ-Kicks is great, though they've done better (on Eskimo mixes that cost twice as much). And the Playgroup and Andrea Parker ones are nice as well. Haven't gotten into any of the Back to Mines save Richard X, though I plan to get the PSBs' at my earliest opportunity.

Telephonething (Telephonething), Monday, 22 August 2005 02:53 (twenty years ago)

Most of the techno DJ Kicks - Stacey Pullen, Carl Craig, Claude Young - are great, and I also love Tiga, Playgroup, The Glimmers, Chicken Lips...

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:08 (twenty years ago)

fantastic dj kicks kicks: cj bolland, carl craig, claude young, krude & dorfmeister, nicolette, terranova, smith & mighty, andrea parker, kemistry & storm, vikter duplaix, playgroup. erlend oye, glimmer twins - a little better than 50%, i think, consistently from the inception of the series ...

you MAY be able to list as many good BTM discs ... except you have to keep in mind that they have a much easier brief than the dj kicks series. instead of being resposible for a contemporary genre-oriented dj mix, they just throw a bunch of hip tracks they like onto a CD. dude, i can make a good back to mine - anybody can, just check out the "back to mine thread"...

and if you think some of the mid-series dj kicks aren't so great (thievery corporation, truby trio) you should hear some of the earlier back to mines, you should hear dave seaman or talvin singh's volumes ...

vahid (vahid), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

I liked the Tiga/Chicken Lips and Playgroup/DJ Kicks CD. That was pretty ace. Wasn't too impressed with the RIchard X/Back to Mine CD. I still need to get that Glimmer Twins CD.

nathalie starts to cry each time we meet (stevie nixed), Monday, 22 August 2005 07:47 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah, chicken lips! another fantastic dj kicks. i wasn't too jazzed on tiga, but people seem to like it ... the dj kicks also seem real epochal, in that when they hit right, they seem to mark moments, the vibes of scenes and things at particular times.

the back to mine / another late night mixes seem much more generic, much less ambitious. (must ... resist ... rockist impulses ...)

vahid (vahid), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

xpost: and if you think some of the mid-series dj kicks aren't so great (thievery corporation, truby trio)...

Er, well, those are my two favourites. Along with the Vikter Duplaix, that is.

I cannot recommend the Neil Tennant disc on the PSB Back To Mine too highly; it is sumptuously beautiful and intelligently sequenced.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Monday, 22 August 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Back To Mine.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

I think the DJ Kicks series is generally better at what it does, no matter which DJ/genre/audience is being catered for. The Back To Mines tend to feature a lot of stuff you would think the average muso would already have.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Does nobody like the Stereo MCs DJ Kicks just because it's the Stereo MCs? I think it's a great one, fuck hataz etc.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

OTM Stereo MCs. Personal fave Thievery Corporation. No knowledge of back to mine sp have no choice but to side with DJ Kicks so fuck u BTM bitchez!

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:26 (twenty years ago)

It's probably not a very fair fight, since the DJ Kicks series is quite varied -- or at least more varied than the "late night listening" vibe of Back to Mine -- so it's probably hard for anyone to unequivocally love all of DJ Kicks. Back to Mine vs. the Late Night tales/Another Late Night series might make a bit more sense.

In any case, I've really enjoyed the Back to Mines by Everything But The Girl, Groove Armada, Richard X, and, somewhat surprisingly, Morcheeba. And of course the PS's. But the New Order edition is ass.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

PSB's, even.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

my picks would be

dj kicks: kemistry and storm, playgroup, erlend oye, chicken lips
back to mine: richard x, psb, danny tenaglia

i will go with dj kicks. if the x-mix series counts then that further solidifies my answer. i was just going through both series on discogs and discovered that they are really quite a few of these comps that i didn't know about and would like to hear.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

Anyone remember 'The INCredible Sound Of' series?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

that there are really

need coffee.

xpost, those were INCredibly expensive here in the states, stevem.

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

i think the series started off with goldie so it was an immediate turn off to me because a dj he is not. (now someone will come in here and say that it's great)

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

no. of DJ Kicks I own = 4 (and keen to hear several others)
no. of BTMs I own = 0 (and only keen to hear the PSBs one)

and just to save time:
dylan = 1
springsteen = 0
strokes & bravery = both 0

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Goldie's been DJing longer than he's been doing anything else. His INCredible mix was OK if not amazing.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 22 August 2005 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Unlike other people, I won't belittle anyone for not using the search function...

DJ Kicks vs Back to Mine vs Another Late Night

peepee (peepee), Monday, 22 August 2005 17:38 (twenty years ago)

the kruder & dorfmeister dj kicks RULED THE UNIVERSE for a long long time. you know, back when people cared about smooth mixing and good flow more than showoffy eclecticism.

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 22 August 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

"i think the series started off with goldie so it was an immediate turn off to me because a dj he is not. (now someone will come in here and say that it's great)"

The Goldie mix is worth it for Neil Trix's "Gestures Without Motion" alone, which is probably now impossible to find in any other form. Also "Terminator"!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

it's got "otto's way" by fresh and vegas on it too. i used to love that track. (probably still would rather hear it mixed by someone else though.)

tricky (disco stu), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah that's one of my favourite ever 2-step D&B tracks! Didn't those guys end up becoming Bad Company?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 22 August 2005 22:51 (twenty years ago)

bad company? who's that? oh, you must mean http://www.discogs.com/image/A-2017-002.jpg ... "the artists formerly known as bad company".

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

Yes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

i loved the early metro and virus records too. i think i have the matrix level one comp around here somewhere. i will have to dig it out. i was listening to jonny l's sawtooth the other day. "piper" omg.

tricky (disco stu), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Unlike other people, I won't belittle anyone for not using the search function...

what can I say... I had the question in my head and had to ask it that second! ...mostly cuz I was listening to the Playgroup DJ Kicks at the time and had recently bought the PSB Back to Mine.

Brandon Mitchell (A.H.), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Seriously, no problem on this end, Brandon.

peepee (peepee), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 02:43 (twenty years ago)

Lukas.

You are correct.
