Superbowl=Officially No Longer Cool

This isn't exactly timely but the Paul McCartney thread got me thinking. Can we now officially state that appearing at the Superbowl means you now and forever cease to be cool. In addition, and cool that you may have built up over the years that you may still be clinging desparately to is gone forever.

Let's look at a list of recent examples (it could, of course, be debated whether some of these people were ever cool in the first place.

U2, Paul McCartney, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. I'm sure there are numerous other Superbowl Victims. Could this be the equivalent of the SI curse?

Michael Jackson is still cool.

Kurt Warner's robotic wife is hella cool.

Oh My God! You know you're watching the Rams play on Fox when they show Mrs. Kurt Warner and HER HAIR about 96 times during the first quarter. You'd think she was a cheerleader. And less of a salon disaster.

When was the Superbowl *EVER* cool?

Kill Jocks!

When was the Superbowl *EVER* cool?

Officially, right up until the McCartney thread it appears. Who knew?

Curt, Wednesday, 13 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

U2 is still cool, though I'm probably the only one who thinks so in the entire world.

Superbowl halftime shows have always been disasters.

Even before they had singers and such they had this at the fourth one:

"Simulated cannon blasts in a re-creation of the Battle of New Orleans scared horses who threw their riders. One man lost a finger in a mishap with a cannon."

Ah, but for the jock-friendly among us, the halftime stuff was especially awful this year precisely because the game itself was so great. They should have called off halftime altogether and just played through.

I have had American Football explained to me about ten times now and I still can't make head nor tail of it.

My wanton abuse of the remote control during commercial breaks and between-period hoohah allows me to enjoy sporting events much more than your average non-clicker.

You mind if I bitch about Olympic Hockey here for a second? Every stinking commerical break, someone scores. All the good stuff happens when they cut away from the game. It SUCKS. And Jim Lampley is not looking good nowadays, lemme tell you.

As soon as they start making albums as good as The Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby again, I'll be in full agreement.

You need the CBC, Dave.

Haven't seen much of the hockey coverage -- why? Are they acting arrogant?

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tom -

You just gotta watch it for a season. Same as with most games and with language, for that matter: you don't play the rules, you play the game. Therefore knowing the rules doesn't necessarily give a person any understanding of the game. Only playing or watching works. Plenty of American Football enthusiasts would tell you that the pro game sucks anyhow, though, and that college ball is the only thing worth watching. Go figure.

This thread has got me thinking: Were Husker Du ever asked to play the Superbowl? Who would you REALLY like to see liven up a prestige sports event? A couple of years ago they tried to spice up the England v West Indies cricket tour by having live music during the lunch interval. There was Third World, Jazz Jamaica and of course omnipresent Jools Holland and his dull r'n'b thing. It was hilarious. They interviewed some old wankers in the members' stand to find out what they made of it all and they just conformed to the 'rah rah huff puff' stereotype. Meanwhile the only music we ever get at the F A Cup Final in England is the Band of the Coldstream Guards. Oh and at matches at Wembley Stadium in the last few years of its existence we used to get 'celebration music' blaring out after the game. Admittedly I only ever experienced this once, as my team aren't very good, but it was a decidedly unedifying experience. Instead of celebrating our play-off win with our own songs we had to endure ear- blasting Rockin' All Over The World and We will BLOODY Rock You. I'm fascinated by the phenomenon of the DJ whipping up the crowd at ice- hockey in the USA. What's the most bizarre thing you've ever heard 'between plays'?

Well, it's mostly the same team as Nagano and they behaved disgracefully there, one of them taunting a member of the Canadian team about her father (who was dying of Cancer iirc). I was disgusted when they won.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was sickened too.

Husker Du would be more appropriate for pro wrestling.

I missed Cheap Trick live in the infield at Churchill Downs before the Kentucky Oaks (the race on the day before the Derby, that most of the locals go to), which was a bummer. I have a feeling they must've scared the horses, though.

hstencil, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the husker du/wrestling connection runs deep.

bob mould's new fighting technique is unstoppable(?) check out this recent interview in the new york times:
