Why do we have popstars?

That means, how did we get to the stage where the public 'personality' has such great currency across civilization? I'm including all types of public figures here, not just musicians, so read 'popstars' as 'stars of popular culture'.

I'm not complaining about the situation, or supporting it. But what do we invest in these icons?

This concept of Identity forms so much of the bedrock of western culture, and I haven't read nearly as much as I'd like to.

So let's hear your ideas, and I'll check out any texts that have been written on this subject as well, if anyone's got any leads.

Being very simplistic here, I suppose they're icons representing what is now. People look up to them as they're 'on the ball', innovative or provocative in some way.

They give us something to aspire to, something to worship, and something to hate.

Aye, & represent a particular point in time.

Subject: Why do we have popstars?
Because we can't keep our Grunge stars...they keep shooting themselves in the face.

Hmm... Maybe people think that if they know how stars act, they can act like stars, and therefore become stars- a least in a small way

Regarding "Popstars"/"Pop Idols", (If we're talking about that) what we could be seeing there could be some sort of Cinderella/"Jim 'll Fix It" type thing, in that the winner(s) of the show were "ordinary" people who have now had success bestowed on them- if it could happen to them, could it happen to anyone?!?! (Well, probably not- but it's nice thought anyway!!!!)
