Any ideas? Any requests?

("The White Stripes". Ha ha.)

NoRmAn PhAy.

Dr. C, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How about fads? You can address the boom selection/remix MP3 obsession. And maybe the internet's role as well.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

We are kind of doing a bootlegging 'special' but not formally so - I think it'll be a continued interest of several contributors for a while.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

More importantly, what does anyone want to write about? I like the special but to remain "special" they can only be done every now and then.

Pete, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oasis would be nice now. ;-)

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, every couple of months. The thing with the Strokes special is that once I'd jokingly announced it I got offers to write about them from about 7 other people, 3 of whom then ACTUALLY DID which is in FT terms a record ratio. So I thought if I said, right, we're doing another special in, say, April, it might get people thinking now.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

what does anyone want to write about?
Myself naturally. ;-)

How about (rock) journalism?

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

METAL!!!

jel, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jel that is a very good idea.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

¡¡¡¡¡PRoG!!! @¿# @¿# @¿# @¿# @¿# etc

1: Why prog secretly = punk
2: Why prog secretly = free improv
3: Why prog secretly = soul
4: Why prog secretly = hiphop
5: Why prog secretly = er mariachi

K-RaD S-XoR, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

IDM, has it reached it's limit? Where will it all go from here?

Arien, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A couple of requests: a) free improv (and maybe its relationship to 'rock' bands such as dead C/ fushitsusha) and b) Paul Dolden (the masterful electroacoustic composer).

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey I have a Dolden record. If anyone wants to write anything about free improv I'd love to publish it.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Elastica

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not a genre.

What about Mozart? Sterling on "The Magic Flute", Pete on "Mozart as the first Pop Idol", Tim F on The Jupiter Symphony ... would be great.

Jeff W, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

METAL! METAL! METAL!

Oh, man, I would SO LOVE to have an excuse to write about the stuff I've been listening to! METAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL!

(Chance of follow-thru: 53%)

David Raposa, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PROG IDOL!

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Metal would be most excellent. I would also say country, but fear people would get the wrong end of the stick and think it would/should be about No Depression type stuff.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TARKUS!

N., Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

TARKUS VS. IPC SUB-EDITORS!

David Raposa, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Fashion & Musick.

helenfordsdale, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom- is the dolden record 'L'Ivresse de la vitesse' because I really like that one. There is, shall we say, plenty to listen to in that one? Don't think there has been a follow up which seems to suggest he reached a dead end (I mean, how much more complex can it get?).

free improv is hugely enjoyable and there does not seem to be a commercial variant (which makes it more fascinating). There is a scene (so you get a lot of people turning up in everbody's records).

Metal? PLease don't! it has been written abt extensively whereas improv might be more challenging. I think thre's plenty to explore within this 'subject'.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah "L'Ivresse..." - I have to say it's perhaps the most 'difficult' thing in my collection: the method inrigues me but so far I've not been able to get through even a single disc. I don't listen to enough electroacoustic music to even begin to get the slightest perspective on it so I doubt anything I could say would be other than banal - that said I've long been niggled by a feeling that FT should have more writing covering experimental records, modern composition, and underground scenes like free improv. Obviously we couldnt pretend to be comprehensive or even informed but an amateur, personal perspective on listening to the stuff could still be interesting maybe?

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Indie hip-hop. Make the DC scene a cornerstone, with Poem-Cees as its representative.

Dan Perry, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

2: Why prog secretly = free improv

See also: Henry Cow, King Crimson -- and they're Brits too!

dleone, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

MC Garage.

stevo, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

1. Pop writing: yes, that's a key theme: might finally yield the great MM article I've been seeking all these years.

2. Old-time songwriters: one contributor each on Berlin, Gershwins, Porter, Rodgers + H1/2, et al.

3. The Songs Of Burt Bacharach: one contributor each per song: c.10 songs in all.

the pinefox, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I WANT TO WRITE ABOUT PROG!

ethan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

also trevor horn.

ethan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Americana maybe?

Jeff, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom- an amateur and personal perspective on listening to this, eh? If I try to write something over the weekend, perharps, and email the word file to you...is that OK?

But I just have to say: I have never tried to write abt a record, or a scene, and I am not an expert (though 95% of records I've bought last year are free improv/free jazz records). And if it's unpublishable, you will tell me.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, what is the deadline. When is the next 'issue' of FT special?

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OK - FT publication details:

I try to upload stuff every Sunday. Usually there's some back-and- forth between getting a piece in first draft and putting it up. This Sunday there are pieces by Tim and Douglas Wolk going up, for instance, and possibly me, and Sarah if she types hers up.

The 'Specials' I mention a few weeks in advance and the pieces I get for them are held over until it comes out. I doubt we'll actually do an improv 'special' so your article if you wrote it Julio would go up in a couple of weeks probably.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think the prog special is a good idea.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Americana maybe?
I did not dare to ask.

Why don't we make a poll with all suggestions from this thread (without my first one obviously) and vote? Free polls can be created here for example.

alex in mainhattan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if you do a special on metal, you gotta have at least one femme fatale writing about it.

helen, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

tom- Thanks for clearing that up. I'll try and write something.

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Suggestion: Joe McGlinchey writes about the cosmic wisdom of Jon Anderson as it pertains to UK Garage. Ethan could add something on escapism.

dleone, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Given I have still not finished my Wyclef thing I am clearly in no position to comment, but _metal_ sounds good, unless we all suddenly realise that _Stairway to Hell_ (?) was definitive.

Improv? Isn't that what they do on 'Who's line is it anyway?'? I thought FT was mostly music-based...

alext, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pub Rock.

Dr. C, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Upside-Down Issue! FT & ILM reg'lars are forced to write about something totally against the grain of their tastes (not considered *bad* by them so much as not considered at all.) Ethan on The Who. Ally on Neu! Tom on Emo. Marcello on P*ptones. Alex on Destiny's Child. Dave Q on Hear'say. &c.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned on Elvis Costello's lyrics.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I LIKE Poptones now!

Do try and keep up, Clover.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Ethan loved the Who?

Sounds like a good idea though.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah what the hell, the who are one of my favorite bands ever! the upside-down thing is a fantastic idea though and i'd love to do it if given a proper foil. i could write about neutral milk hotel!

ethan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sorry, you two, my memory is all bent.

Sterling Clover, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Me on Christian Rock.

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Way prescient! The upside-down thing is on the cards as an ongoing feature, once C90 Go gets established. The idea would be to have the writer dropped in the middle of a genre/band they know nothing about but thought they might not like rather than one they knew they disliked.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

This feature would probably have to premiere on April Fool's Day, right?

Michael Daddino, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Metal would be an interesting topic as long as it was covered properly and didn't descend into an indie kid sneer-fest.

DG, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why The Wire insists on capitalizing "Prog", the state of copyediting standards in general, and what it all means.

dan, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ned on Elvis Costello's lyrics.

Over my dead body.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I second the ethan on WHO idea as long as it becomes FT house style to always refer to them as WHO.

N., Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haha who is MY upside-down then (ps yes yes i am already "delivering" an FT piece on hornbyXoR)

"the state of copyediting standards in general": they do not have mark s as sub = they are single-handedly destroying standards of literacy worldwide

mark s, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's time to find my Helloween albums!

jel, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The global influence of METAL!

jel, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Truckers and their music. Must contain interviews with real truckers. Suggetsed writer: Hopkins

Sister Disco, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Big trucks: I can write a Mystikal review!

Sterling Clover, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Judging by the "Favourite bands at age 10" thread, clearly the next FT Special has to be about Weird Al.
