Selling my record collection - where to do it?

Due to severe financial constraints, and the fact that I need a lot of money for an eye operation, I'm being forced to sell a large part of my record collection to raise funds. The question is this: Where is the best place to do it? I've got a lot of sort of bog standard CDs (60s to present day) - about 750 or so - and want some decent enough money for them. I've also got a collection of 80s / 90s vinyl, LPs and singles, including some things that are quite rare (hate to admit it here but I've got a complete collection of Sarah Records, and it's breaking my heart that I'll have to sell 'em), and basically need to know - should I do them through an auction on Ebay, or Record Collector, or is there somewhere else? I don't want to go to a local place and get a quid a piece for them because that would be stupid. So....

Anyone help me please!

Rob M, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm sure the entire sarah records collection would fetch quite a sum on ebay.

Todd Burns, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Auction off the rare ones. Sell the others individually to your friends and coworkers (for as much as you can squeeze out of them) and then sell the remaining lot at a local place.

Dave225, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

eBay is definitely the best place for any 80s indie stuff - the price stories you hear are staggering.

Tom, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here.

JM, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Another vote for ebay. I know someone who sold a Creation Records videotape from the early 90s for $80 (!!), so I know that the Sarah Record collection could probably make you a mint.

Nicole, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yeah, Sarah will fetch you a pretty penny. Use eBay, and sign up for PayPal (or another semi-free payment service) to expedite the transfer of moolah. (They take a small percentage of moneys exchanged via auction sales, but it's not bad @ all.) Make sure to use lots of buzzwords in the description, and keep the TITLES of the auctions clear & concise. And know where you're filing the stuff.

And send me a link, too. :)

David Raposa, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sorry that you have to sell most of your collection, I sold 90% of my vinyl in the early 90s as I was unemployed and about to be thrown out of my flat and I still occasionally lose sleep over it today.

Why not Make up a list and send a copy to anyone on this forum whos interested, it seems to cater for the discerning music fan and I really cant see how anyonewould object.

Don't suppose you've got a copy of "Pacific ocean blue" by Dennis Wilson? (Like a vulture picking at bones, thats me)

Kris England, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Er... no but I do know someone who could burn you off a copy of "Pacific Ocean Blue" actually...

And to Dr C... fancy my original copy of "Alma Mater", plus other Stockholm Monsters singles? 8-)

Rob M, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hang round Ebay for a week or so (try 'browse' and looking through the relevant categories) first to get an idea of what sells and what doesn't etc. scans of the cover are good, if possible, particularly for the rarer vinyl. try Covers 33 for cardboard LP and CD mailers. pack LPs with a 12" square sheet of corrugated cardboard inside the mailer. and don't forget to write yr own address on the back, in case it can't be delivered.

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Come on over here, I've gotta handful of magic beans I'll trade for your cow^H^H^H record collection.

Lord Custos, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rob, You de man. If you could do that it would be brilliant cos I've been looking for easily ten years and I'd almost given up hope.

I don't mind paying in cash but I can do you a swap if you like? anything you're looking for?

E-mail me if you like and thanks againn.

Kris England., Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe, i'd be saying the same as Lord Custos if it were 60s/70s vinyl.

oh, you can use the 'search completed items' option on Ebay to find out what things have recently sold for. this used to go right back to item no. 1 but over time they've cut back their database size, and now you only get about 2 months at most

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, it's YOU Rob. I'm really sorry to hear about your plight. Is there any way that you can avoid selling this stuff - I guess you've already exhausted all possibilities.

I can only agree that ebay seems like the best bet, but the money may take a bit of time to come in. It's possible that someone like Reckless might give you a good price for the rareties and the Sarah stuff en masse. You'll probably have to make a list, so you should circulate it to people on this board.

Stockholm Monsters - I couple of months back I'd have bitten your hand off, but they're all coming out on CD now. If you get round to making a list of Factory/post-punk/60's stuff I'd like to take a look.

All the best, and I hope this whole thing isn't too painful. The main thing is to get your eye sorted out. I hope you can do that without losing too many recds you've loved.

Dr. C, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks to everyone who's offered advice - once I've got a definitive list going of stuff I'm selling I'll see if I can do a link to it on here somewhere, there's loads of stuff to get rid of and I might as well have the money for it.

As regards the op, it's been done already - it wasn't that painful after a day, the improvement was immense, and it cost two grand so there's a lot of records to go... as you've all guessed, post punk / indie / 80s / 90s stuff... loads of Factory / Creation stuff in there... oh god it's killing me to part with 'em. But needs must.

Kris - I'll be in touch! I'll talk to my mate and find out about it for you.

Tara for now, folks.

Rob M, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You got the right attitude about it, though. Not having music around would pain me to my soul...but not being able to read, say? Oh god! I don't want to think about it. Hope the recovery continues well, and good luck indeed. Shoot me off a list of discs you have I might like, you might be able to get some money out of me at least. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris, I was in your position and I finally borrowed it off someone I met. It was a horrible disappointment. Don't get your hopes up.

N., Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You could buy it here though, if you really want.

N., Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's also quite a few CD and LP copies of it on Ebay at the moment (from sellers in the US - do a search with 'available to UK' set). all pretty expensive though (20 quid+)

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rob I`m a music binge buyer (last week`s binge - 30 albums)...so i`ll probably take a fair few off your hands if you provide a list to this forum..

nelly, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm SO glad I decided to have all responses to this sent to my mailbox, it'll make it all so much easier when I send out the list. Expect it in about a week or so when I've sorted it all out.

And yep, "Pacific ocean blue" was a disappointment to me when I heard it too. After all the hype, it was very 70s with Dennis' voice shot to pieces. Almost up there with "No other" for 'classic album being a disappointment' in my book. Now there's a subject for the thread, if it's not been done before.

Rob M, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Can only second the advice above re ebay/paypal. Keep a log of all your transactions, email confirmation, dispatch etc otherwise it's easy to lose track of what's happening especially if you're putting a lot up for sale.
Worthwhile learning a wee bit of HTML, just changing the font size, colour etc can make it look a lot more professional, inspiring confidence in the buyer.

Hope all goes well on all counts.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe, i'd be saying the same as Lord Custos if it were 60s/70s vinyl.
Me personally, I'm not concerned if its vinyl or not. All the people on this forum keep getting me interested in hearing new music, but I can't find any of it in this cultural wasteland of a suburban town I live in.
Besides, I just read an article off of Rocks Backpages where a guy was just leaving huge boxfuls of CDs on the sidewalk for random people to take because he was too lazy to sell them. That whole story made me see red.
Send 'em over HERE if you don't want them!

Lord Custos, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's also record fairs for selling stuff - VIP run a lot around the UK, but their website was unable to give me dates just now. anyway it's www.vip-24.com. a lot of the dealers will specialise in certain styles/periods

michael, Thursday, 14 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sorry about your eye. I think ebay will be your best bet. It's a bit of work, but you can reach a potential market of millions of people. Even with the fees it is usually the best way to go. You will definitely get more than if you sell to a shop. I'm sure the sarah stuff will sell well, not sure if it is best to list them all separately or sell as a batch. Since most Sarah collectors probably are looking for specific items, might be best to sell them separately (or in lots of related items). Just make sure you list everything with accurate descriptions, pictures if possible, and reasonable shipping rates, etc. If ebay is too much, you may want to post some for sale lists on the indiepop list. BTW, if you have a list, send it to me, I would probably be interested in some of your 80s/90s vinyl. Get a paypal account setup too if you can as it will make international transactions easier for you.

g, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

rob, after reading the thread i see you need about 2K (uk pounds i assume). I imagine if most of those 750 CDs or so are decent it might be enough on it's own to get you the cash you need. If they are generally desirable CDs (and some may be out of print rarities you don't know about, i mean, the original reprise Hendrix CDs for ex. are very desirable, when i sold some on ebay i was shocked to get up to $40 apiece), you should make an average of 3-5 USD on them on ebay, so $2250 - $3750, which might get you most of what you need. Maybe you shouldn't sell everything at once, and see how you do on the more easily parted with stuff first.

g

g, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

g is right, Rob.

Your collection is probably worth a lot more than you think, so I doubt you'll need to sell all that much of it. I'm always amazed at how much early 80s indie on vinyl (in VG or better condition) sells for second hand in the Notting Hill RTE, especially 12" singles/EPs. I'm pretty sure there's some good reference books around that can give you some guidance as to what 'reserve price' (or whatever the e- bay equivalent is) you should aim for at auction.

Good luck, and glad the operation seems to have gone well. (And, if this doesn't sound too vulture-like, I'll be glad to peruse your 'for sale' list too)

Jeff W, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

two years pass...
Okay - this is the closest thing I found when searching for a spam &/or record-selling thread for people to advertise from. I'm a bit surprised ILM doesn't have one already. Do you guys think that would be useful or no? I know ILMers are mostly download whores, but some of you collect recordings as well, right?

I am selling about 200 records right now, but its mostly techno since I dj that stuff- but theres also some stuff that might appeal to ILMers.

So would something like that be utilized, or do most of you buy stuff and keep it forever (maybe thats a bit more common of general music collectors than for dj's)? I'm asking not just because I want to spam you all, but because if there is general interest and a consensus on a central posting thread, than it could be a pretty useful thing to have on ILM. Maybe it has been discussed/implemented before, I'm somewhat new so feel free to school me.

pete why don't you make a list of your records and put it up as a webpage somewhere, then link to it from this thread? i'm sure a lot of ilmers would be interested in what you have--including the techno stuff.

slocki,
I already made a page, and I usually tell the Discogs forum and a couple mailing lists. They will be on Gemm shortly, but like to let online communities that I'm involved in get a head-start-
Here's a link for those interested - selling from MI, prices in USD..

i'm not about to start my own board, I thought ILM might be interested, but I guess if you guys were then it probably would have happened already..

I'm in the process of getting ~200 CDs up on eBay, I'll post a link here when it's all set. Prices will be v. competitive, i.e., set below Amazon's lowest used prices.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:07 (fifteen years ago)

Lowest despite condition? (Acceptable - Like New)

Evan, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:34 (fifteen years ago)

Umm... not sure, I don't check condition on Amazon listings. I'm just pricing my stuff below the lowest Amazon used price (down to $1.99 or so). For most CDs it's between $1.99 and $7.99, depending: say an Amazon CD is at $8.65 used, I'll price at $7.99. If it's at $3.96, I'll post at $2.99... and so forth.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

Generally if stuff doesn't sell at auction (usually about half of the CDs I list), I'll take it to 30-day BuyItNow listings and knock the price down $1 or so. And, then, most stuff sells within 30 days.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

Well the lowest used price on an item may be "7.99 Like New" or on another item "17.99 Acceptable." If you take this into account you can sell your Like New copy of that expensive OOP second item at "23.99 Like New" and a buyer will go for that over the copy just labeled Acceptable. Especially if it is a collectors item, which is more likely with prices like that.

Evan, Tuesday, 7 September 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

Right, that makes sense. I think it matters less for common CDs, where an "acceptable" version might be $2.99 and a "like new" $3.99, and besides, CDs that are underpriced by a few bucks can be bid up at auction -- and often are.

Anything OOP or priced $10 and up on Amazon I'll research a bit more closely and ensure I'm pricing competitively.

This current batch is mostly in-print stuff, though.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

one month passes...

I'm in the process of getting ~200 CDs up on eBay, I'll post a link here when it's all set. Prices will be v. competitive, i.e., set below Amazon's lowest used prices.

buncha stuff finally listed this week, mostly cds (priced $1-2 below amazon's lowest used) + a few random books, movies, boris vinyl... with more to be listed in the coming days
