I'm off to Berlin in a few weeks - dead excited about it, but need to know what the hottest nightspots are in the city at the mo'. All recommendations gratefully received.... I'm particularly into German house/techno of the Kompakt/Get Physical variety.

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

ostgut / panorama bar is a must but only if yr very open minded.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

also, weekend, on the top floor of an office block just by alexanderplatz is pretty great too.

as is wmf.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 16:55 (twenty years ago)

ostgut / panorama bar is a must but only if yr very open minded.

a huge picture of a vagina on the wall next to the bar, people fucking in the niches, tons of gay beefcake on the middle floor - yep openmindedness is key

fe7 (FE7), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:43 (twenty years ago)

club maria is also good, on the other side of the ostbahnhof from berghain

fe7 (FE7), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

that's not the half of it. there are tales from khan's 'smegma' night that are totally unfit for me to recount on here. it's a wonderful place! xp

stirmonster (stirmonster), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 17:46 (twenty years ago)

unfit to recount on ILX? yeh right? what exactly is ilx fit for?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Ah! This thread is for me!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 18:45 (twenty years ago)

weekend, on the top floor of an office block

This sounds good.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

Weekend is closed for the summer. The two great clubs beside Berghain/Panoramabar are the WMF Sommerlager, one of the oldest clubs of East Berlin, that managed to keep its greatness by moving location all the time - it's in its eight location right now. Very nice. And twice a month open for free on wednesdays. That's tomorrow. Luciano is going to play, if I didn't get it wrong. (www.wmfclub.de) And then there is Watergate. A club right beside the river Spree, when you're downstairs on the dancefloor you see the water while dancing. (www.water-gate.de)

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Luciano, wait for me!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

They always try to keep it secret who exactly is going to play: it's supposed to be Peacefrog-Contexterrior-Cadenza-Jack night. Whatever that is.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I always find Maria a bit stifling, and the sound leaves a bit to be desired, but I was never there in summer, when I believe they open a terrace. Watergate is a great place to watch the sun come up. If the Beat Streets are going on, they're a fantastic (private-ish) afterparty in a warehouse. Ask around. Volksbuhne occasionally does bigger events, and it's a fantastic space.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

i missed luciano & serafin the last time i was in berlin because i got so stuffed at the delicious cheap restaurant across the street from haus pfefferberg i couldnt move a muscle, let alone dance. its a trap, that restaurant. xxp

fe7 (FE7), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

is contexterrior berlin based? i thought it was US/UK for some reason

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

But baboon, if you want to have the Get Physical sound, Weekend is your club. M.A.N.D.Y. have their residency there. And it's going to be open by mid-September. It's a beautiful club. The air condition sucks though. Your wet from head to toe after two minutes - no need to even come close to the dancefloor.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Contexterrior is run by Jay Haze. And he lives in Berlin (or at least I think he lives here because I see him at my record dealer all the time).

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'll be there for the first week of september, but I leave on a Saturday! Am I going to miss everything?

Also the restaurant recommendations are very welcome. And record shopping!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Berghain seconded, vigorously. Also pleasureable are Maria am Ostbahnhof (mentioned above), Watergate (ditto), Kaffeeburger (smaller, quirkier) and Sage Club (its got the flamebreathing dragon after all). I have drunkely stumbled into clubs in Berlin that I'll never remember the name or location of but will never forget. It's a good town.

deathbypog, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Missed adam's message. Criminal...we're both bay areans too. To answer, you won't miss everything. There's all night raving madness to be found in any genre from Wednesday through Sunday. Daytime too. Check exberliner.com, newberlinmagazine.com and 030magazine.com (i think). All good places for listings. oh, zitty.de, too. One other... Tips.de (guessing here...the magazine is called tips). But, if you leave on Saturday, you miss the biggest night with the biggest names. Typically, Maria, Berghain and Watergate pull the big name DJ's. But there will be posters up everywhere advertising monster gigs you would never have found out about being an English speaker. Just wander around and keep your eyes open. Of course, asking people what's up works as well...Berliners are quite friendly. I once stopped one and asked him where to get my hair cut and I was directed to the best 'do of my life...

deathbypog, Tuesday, 23 August 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

adam youve already got my russendisko @ kaffeeburger recommendation, right?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Having been in Berlin the second week of July and taken in a bit of the clubbin' I can only recommend one thing: Bring an iron lung. Nobody smokes like the Germans (my wife and I left after 2 hours at Water-Gate).

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 01:42 (twenty years ago)

Hmm...other recommendations:

You must, must, must cancel your hotel reservations immediately and book (if available), Ku' Damm 101. The breakfast (on the top floor of the hotel overlooking Berlin and wholly gourmet!) alone is worth any and every stay.

Up the street is the swank shopping up and down Kurfürstendamm (AKA Ku' Damm) itself. You might even buy a Look54 "sweat-jacket" there like I did! (By far my favorite souvenir of my entire European vacation.)

Restaurant-wise my wife and I really enjoyed dinner at Florian for legit German food and, although it's billed as "American" food, Julep's is much more fusion than burger and fries -- and both restos are located in great, very "Berlin" neighborhoods.

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

Also, the Love Parade's site has a pretty handy calendar to find all things club-wise (which might prove useful given your Saturday departure).

Zimmer026 (Zimmer026), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

thanks guys!

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 02:35 (twenty years ago)

I'd recommend White Trash Fast Food, it's a great bar that looks like a chinese restaurant. Also, go to anything on at the Palast Der Republik just to see inside it. It's the old commie bingo hall, it's massive and inside it's awesome to look at.

I'm going back berlin way soon as my friends are moving there in 3 weeks.

Go here:

http://www.whitetrashfastfood.com/

Have a good one.

Oh yeah, for vinyl, i found space hall to be most impressive.

Kid Twist (kid twist), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

White Trash Fast Food has closed down.

On Sunday September 11th I'm playing Schloss Lanke, a tumbledown castle on a lake outside Berlin (10km from Bernau S-bahn station). Chandeliers and sound bins, Prenzlauer Berg types with their kids, computer art installations, art rooms... it's worth a visit.

Momus (Momus), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 06:57 (twenty years ago)

I always find Maria a bit stifling, and the sound leaves a bit to be desired,

I thought the sound system was amazing when I went there!

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 07:31 (twenty years ago)

i guess for proper techno, it's good - but i was there for an oceanclub party that featured everyone from märz to thomas fehlmann to miss kittin on the main stage, and it definitely didn't do märz's sound any favors, and once you're out of the heart of the main floor i feel like it gets murky fast. but perhaps i'm asking too much.

oh yeah, last time i was in berlin (ok, only time) i hit a small little club called rosi's for a wighnomy show that was fantastic. small place, really gritty, feels like a warehouse party even though it's totally legit. there's a stopped clock on the wall which i particularly like - almost like a sort of statement: "we're berliners, we don't need no stinking clocks!"

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Was it this lesbian club in Kreuzberg, next to the SO 36?

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the fantastic answers, guys! Looking forward to going twice as much now... Club Ostgut/Panorama sounds fab - is the fucking both straight and gay? ;)

Going on weekend of the 10th Sept - d'you think Week-end wil have opened back up by then?

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:13 (twenty years ago)

oh, and (ahem) is it as easy/safe to score drugs in clubs as in London, for example?

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

I never had a problem. Neither getting them nor taking them. Only exception: they have a very eager cleaning lady at Weekend. Sometimes she starts shouting and drags people out of the toilet, when she sees that four people try to disappear in one.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Whitied horribly in the WMF toilets. A highly embarrased, yet surprisingly friendly exchange with the toilet attendant in very broken German ensued, I had to donate a few extra euro's but it was all cool.

I (might, haven't got my tix yet) be there in Sept. Thinking of passing through for the Bpitch Control/Border Community joint bash @ Maria. Any tips I had to give have already been covered :/

Have a good time!

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

I could use some tips about Koeln...heading there day after tomorrow for Total 6. DANKS

deathbypog, Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

as Philip mentioned it... just recieved this from the Monika mailing list: D-Berlin - Oceanclub Popkomm Special @ Maria am Ufer (feat. Kapajkos) 15.09.2005

Might have to re-arrange my travel dates then. Any tips re: the Popkomm week anyone?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 13:13 (twenty years ago)

curse you all for making me want to go back to Berlin exactly when I can't!

and post more links!

patita (patita), Wednesday, 24 August 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

OK< bumping this to the top for a few more quality answers!

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 5 September 2005 10:16 (twenty years ago)

when are you going to be in town? i'm here til october 1st.

there are loads of great parties in mid-September because of PopKomm, so you should try to come around then.

geeta (geeta), Monday, 5 September 2005 11:18 (twenty years ago)

Gonna be there this weekend in fact - would love to be able to come for longer, but work 'n' shit, y'know...

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 5 September 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

de:bug dates. i would suggest going to berghain on friday and maria on saturday

don't be jerk, this is china (FE7), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:15 (twenty years ago)

Ah, you're a star - thank you!

And Geeta, what exactly is PopKomm? Like the Detroit Music COnference thing?

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Monday, 5 September 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

five months pass...
bump! yay! It looks like I'll be in Berlin 3rd and 4th of March. Dunno much about anything but where can I find info about what's on? where is the party at? That loveparade site linked above doesn't work too well for me. Help me internet.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

cliquez ici

Yawn (Wintermute), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 19:58 (twenty years ago)

Oooh! Good site, I'm off to Berlin at end of March and it already lists several tasty dates.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

thanks, yawn.

Watergate is closed for the weekend :( but I wonder whether this Perlon night would be fun: Audio Werner (live), Horror Inc., Sammy Dee, Zip. I've had good (Melchoir) and bad experiences at Perlon nights... I've never heard any of these guys.

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 17 February 2006 12:11 (twenty years ago)

i can't imagine that perlon party won't be good. i've never heard audio werner live but his records are some of my faves at the moment right now, esp the new one - minimal house perfection. and zip is always an incredible DJ, and isn't horror inc akufen???

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Friday, 17 February 2006 14:08 (twenty years ago)

yup....seeing the watergatew flyer for feb when i was over there made me depressed. theres areal with metope and basteroid playing together, and m.a.n.d.y on another day as well.

mind you, maybe i should stop moping, i went into the lame HMV in my town and wa confronted with huge duplicate numbers of get phycial tunes?!

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 17 February 2006 14:23 (twenty years ago)

it surprises me that this style of music is not so popular in England yet. Japanese are sloooowly getting used to the idea (Japanese will dance to anything). I would have thought minimal would have made greater inroad in the UK but on ILM people seem a bit... starved of the stuff?

Book Eulberg, ambrose!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 17 February 2006 14:47 (twenty years ago)

things just get sucked into london mainly. i think things are changing v slowly, alex under is playing manc, but its all weird midweek things (eg audion playing next wed in manc!) cos weekends, clubs wont book them because they arent big names. i dont even think theres many euro dance style tunes in the charts anymore. i think the association with breaks is not healthy, and its never going to be like germany, but the UK scene, as in producers and stuff is all a lot more minimal in the sense of not being dancefloor really at all.

as philip described, berlin is just like an orgy of this stuff. or if yr in berghain, just an orgy i guess.

its probably better this way - longing and deprivation from something you want is overall better than over saturation.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 17 February 2006 15:03 (twenty years ago)

longing and deprivation from something you want is overall better than over saturation

Yes. being where it is not happening gives you a certain drive to make thing happen. I know this from growing up in the shittiest suburb in the world.

Theoretically, how many people would you get at a Eulberg night in your town? (Leeds? Manchester?) Last time he played in Tokyo he drew 800-1000 -- this is probably half diehard techno crowd + half ordinary clubbers. I guess artists have it good in a city of 35 mil!

Good Dog (Good Dog), Friday, 17 February 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

lol i was thinking more like 200! it is difficult to know, if i was going to do i would take on a calculated (large) financial risk - the calculation would be "im going to lose it all". not that more than 200 people wouldnt come, but it s a question of what sort of thing it would be pitched as. if a big city centre club booked him, you could get 4-500 i guess, but im not sure if i can persuade them to do so. if its just me its gonna be smoewhere smaller. i would like to do it in one of the various odd hidden away smaller places, the negative zones of sheffield, industrial blank spaces, bits of old factory etc.

so it would be a more intimate affair. ill wait and see if i get any word from them at all.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 17 February 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I'll come! :)

worst iPod case scenario (fandango), Friday, 17 February 2006 16:16 (twenty years ago)

ok so 199 to go.... ;)

in fact, i do know 2 other people who have heard of him so thats £24 back already.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 17 February 2006 16:19 (twenty years ago)

three weeks pass...
I'll be going back to Berlin next Wednesday for a week 22-29 March. Can't wait!

I'm not sure what to do clubbing wise. While I'll hapilly go out all hours, and would love to wake up, grab breakfast and then go clubbing, Madeline is less keen.

Are there any good, friendly, bars to catch good DJs between say 8pm-4am??? I'm not picky on the day.

I understand half of Berlin's clubbers are probably only just waking up then, but there must be some good spots?

I've spotted on De:Bug that Roman Flugal, Ewan Pearson, Rob Acid and many others are playing next weekend - but I don't want to treak out only to have to miss them!!!

So, who's got the inside knowledge?

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 16 March 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

five months pass...
Any more inside knowledge for the coming weekend? All answers highly appreciated!

baboon2004 (baboon2004), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 12:38 (nineteen years ago)

four months pass...
It's 2007 & you motherfuckers are going to tell me the truth

(I considered asking nicely, but you saw how it worked for the last guy)

I am staying at some hostel in Mitte this wochende. Planning on seeing Prin Tomas at Week12End unless someone has a better idea. And buying vinyl at Hardwax I s'pose.

Lukas (lukas), Wednesday, 17 January 2007 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I should have just read the stupid thread, there's a lot of good stuff here. Future googlers, don't end up like me, cold and palely loitering ... RTFT.

Lukas (lukas), Tuesday, 23 January 2007 02:05 (nineteen years ago)

lukas are you still here?

jergins (jergins), Monday, 29 January 2007 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

hi

Lukas (lukas), Monday, 29 January 2007 20:40 (nineteen years ago)

two years pass...

I was too tired to go to Prins Thomas. I should have gone anyway. :(

MOVING ON I will arrive in Berlin on March 12th. I reallyreally want to see Oni Ayhun at Panorama Bar on the 13th. Is there anything I should know?

Leaving Berlin on the 21st if anyone wants to recommend things, or meet up.

I've heard Golden Gate club is cool?

counter-clockwise (lukas), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:17 (sixteen years ago)

To clarify - by "is there anything I should know" I mean basically dress code and when to show up, if you can help me with those. Vielen Dank.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 08:20 (sixteen years ago)

the one time i went we turned up at about 6am and walked in no problems. no dress code iirc but i have heard of ppl being turned away completely arbitrarily..

jabba hands, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:37 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, the door policy is fairly arbitrary (and Berghain is much MUCH worse). Showing up either very early or very late is a good idea, and try to have an equal number of guys/girls in your group.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:51 (sixteen years ago)

and try to have an equal number of guys/girls in your group

OK, this applies to clubs in every city, everywhere, but at Panorama Bar in particular ... they will simply not let in a group of three or four guys, for instance, no matter how long you wait.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 09:54 (sixteen years ago)

four gay guys, yes.

jed_, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:01 (sixteen years ago)

no dress code iirc but i have heard of ppl being turned away completely arbitrarily..

Makes me think I should buy something a little nicer than my worn-out Converse All-Stars to maximize my chances. Or get tighter jeans, at least.

they will simply not let in a group of three or four guys

There's only one of me. Dunno if that's any better.

Thanks again.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:09 (sixteen years ago)

and don't act drunken / drugged on the way in. no cameras either.

De que estas hablando? (Tannenbaum Schmidt), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:25 (sixteen years ago)

your more likely to get into berghain/panaromabar if you look pretty average to beefy and have a shaved head than flamboyant UK gay. you'll see guys in tracksuits getting in, its an attitude thing. There are that many asshole mixmag easyjet types that they tend to assume anyone english is a hooligan. Also, i wouldnty go down till 5 or 6am, the door relaxes quite a bit as the tourists go to bed. Go to another club before (not weekend, its only good during the weeks now ironically. watergate is really good and a bit more tourist friendly). All sounds a bit over the top but once in its everything goes and the people are great

Also, check out the knock off Jagermeister called Wurzelpeter that you get in the Lidl supermarkets there. its 5 euros for a 70cl bottle and i absolutely enbalm myself in the stuff every time im out there

straightola, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

don't worry about it. if you look like your anxious about entry then you may not get in. having said that, i've been a few times and only seen one guy get turned away on his own and 2-3 groups of people who seemed quite drunk. people make too much of the door policy. if it was completely arbitrary then there would be no point in thinking about it and, actually, the staff and door people seem decent if not actually friendly, as such.

jed_, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:31 (sixteen years ago)

i suppose the one way to absolutely guarantee entry would be to turn up in a leather jock and chaps.

jed_, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

Never had any hassle getting in, and have been with groups of guys etc. I don't think there's any magic formula, it feels weird offering advice when just walking in seems to have worked okay ime!

I see what this is (Local Garda), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:11 (sixteen years ago)

i love that if you turn up pretty average to beefy and have a shaved head or in tracksuit they'll think 'NOT an English hooligan' and let you in

mdskltr (blueski), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

God, I can't believe I'm going to have to shave my head and wear ass-less chaps just to see this dude. But, you know, whatever it takes.

counter-clockwise (lukas), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

isn't panorama reopening in a new location like.. this week?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

its closed for renovation until friday, but not moving, afaik.
