David S Ware - C or D?

I think I like her style the best out of all his drummers. Well, actually, what am I saying, I love Hamid Drake. You know what I mean. I think she really complements Ware's playing. She's got such a nice touch.

Admittedly, I haven't heard any solo Ware stuff, but the Live in the World three-disc that came out this year is truly amazing.

mcd, I hear you about Susie, no doubt she's a capable drummer, but i think I just dislike that light touch / octopus technique, and prefer more of a visceral drum style (like, say Rashied Ali's). It can't ALL be 'texture,' in my opinion, it's gotta swing / rock SOMETIMES, you know? She seems to have much more in common with the conceptual / academic European improvisers than with somebody like, say, Tom Bruno. Wouldn't you agree?

This is an urgent notice on David S. Ware’s health. David needs to find a kidney donor.

David S. Ware was diagnosed with kidney failure in 1999 and he began dialysis that fall. He had an intensive three week hemodialysis regime toward beginning peritoneal (self-administered) dialysis, which would allow him to travel. David has been on this self-administered dialysis regime multiple times every day and night since October 1999. While certainly difficult, he has been able to travel, and perform his music undiminished, since then.

However, late this past December, David called to say that after 9 years this treatment was no longer working as it had been, and that a kidney transplant is the only viable option for his survival.

Since then a number of friends and family members have offered to give him one of their kidneys. Unfortunately, they have all been disqualified due to health reasons or not having David's blood type, O.

Some basic/initial requirements for viable donors are that they must be under 60 years of age, do not have diabetes or high blood pressure, are in general good health, and have blood type O (either O+ or O- is fine).

That's terrible. Here's hoping something/someone comes through.

As for the initial subject of discussion, Flight of I has long been one of my favorites, and, more recently, I love the "with strings" album Threads, which I seem to be in the minority on.

Terrible news. Hope he finds a donor. (I'm diabetic, so disqualified.)

As far as the discography's concerned, there aren't many duds. I would say the absolute peaks are Flight of I, Go See the World, Surrendered (probably his most accessible album - super-melodic), Live in the World, Dao and Wisdom of Uncertainty. A lot of people love Third Ear Recitation, but it's never been one of my favorites. And Freedom Suite is a better idea than album.

The new one, Shakti, is the first one with a new band featuring Joe Morris on guitar, William Parker on bass and Warren Smith on drums; I think it comes out next Tuesday. It's pretty interesting stuff - Morris and Ware share lead duties pretty easily, and the sheer discipline of Ware's playing (no matter how long he solos for, he never seems to waste notes) is unaffected by the new lineup.

hope a donor can be found soon and that the transplant etc. goes well enough to ensure many more albs and gigs - aisde from maybe sabir mateen and paul flaherty, can't think of many more convincing upholders of the fire music flame

Sad news: David passed away tonight.

That's too bad. I really enjoyed his major label record, with its unimpeachable lineup: Ware, Matthew Shipp, William Parker, and Susie Ibarra.

Both his major label albums (Go See the World and Surrendered) are terrific. I was in the studio when they recorded some of Surrendered, as well as the sessions for Corridors & Parallels, the album after that. Interviewed Ware at his home in NJ, saw the quartet play at least three times, maybe four. An absolutely titanic band. I'll miss him.

Oh man, what a talent, what a player, what a band :-(

"Third Ear Recitation" and "Cryptology" coming close behind.
The Silkheart CDs are tough to find these days, any leads appreciated.
