Sonny Sharrock and Denny Lethargy - "The Junk Sessions" C/D?

I'm a huge Sonny Sharrock fan, esp. Black Woman, and I'm not sure anything could top it, but at least in that particular era The Junk Sessions comes mighty close. Two giants on the guitar stretching out for 6 songs for a total of 75 minutes! This was just re-released several months ago, it had been out of print for close to thirty years.

Trivia bit: the title comes from Lethargy's obsession with junk boats (as the cover makes clear), and not his at-the-time-recently-acquired junk habit!

I'm the only one who has heard this??

gear (gear), Thursday, 25 August 2005 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wait, I think I might have an 8-track of this that was mistakenly credited to The Vertigo Buddhas. Except it doesn't credit Sonny Sharrock, but, rather, Vertigo Buddhas guitarist Eugene "Porky" Pigg, who I guess might be playing the real super-high-pitched WREEOWR stuff on "Amblin' (Into The Fiyr").

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 25 August 2005 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

Gear, never heard it, but I'll be checking it out. Thanks.

The thing has been on my SoulSeek queue list for, like, ages.

When I saw Sonny Sharrock play the Knitting Factory, one of the teens in the front row -- who I sort of assumed was one of his charges back when Sharrock worked at that school for mentally-challenged children -- was wearing a promo T-shirt for Lethargy's RIOR album (though I'm not gonna pretend I knew that at the time), a detail which is in retrospect is either touching or hella creepy.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 26 August 2005 01:24 (nineteen years ago)

I vote both!

gear (gear), Friday, 26 August 2005 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

I have never heard of it, but I'm always up for another helping of Sharrock.

This is very cool.

Dr. Gene Scott (shinybeast), Friday, 26 August 2005 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

gear, where did you get this?

robertw, Friday, 26 August 2005 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

I found it at Atomic Records in Burbank, CA! I have since seen copies at Amoeba.

gear (gear), Friday, 26 August 2005 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Gear, you got the remastered version right? Don't buy the old '90s bootleg version because it was transferred from vinyl and sounds like junk.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 26 August 2005 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

fuck yes, awesome.

I got the remastered version, after I came close to buying the boot version. the boot has that shitty xerox-looking cover of Sonny Sharrock circa 1995 and Lethargy circa 1974 or something, it looks ridiculous.

gear (gear), Friday, 26 August 2005 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I can't find any reference to this on google except for ILM.

Question:

I was googling for Sonny Sharrock albums and found this site. I wrote down the name of this album and went into Virgin to ask about ordering this. The guy working the information desk didn't find any information about it! I called Amoeba Records in Los Angeles and asked them about this, and they didn't know about it either, though the guy working the desk told me someone else had asked about it a couple of months ago, so it's out there somewhere. someone PLEASE tell me more about this! : (

hammer68, Monday, 14 November 2005 07:40 (nineteen years ago)

Oh wow.
Sharrock was semi-retired for much of the 1970s (excepting some works such the boot-only recording "The Junk Sessions" with sludge-blues guitarist Denny Lethargy)...

the thread that just keeps on giving and giving

team jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 00:46 (nineteen years ago)

Good friggin luck. I saw a copy of the boot going for $150 at the last WFMU record fair, and as I looked at it, some Good Samaritan next to me whispered to not bother, the second side had some kind of manufacturing defect or scratch that rendered it completely unplayable.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:07 (nineteen years ago)

The Wikipedia article on Sharrock contains the term "sludge blues," which IIRC was a description that made Lethargy near-homicidal -- what's that about?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:13 (nineteen years ago)

the second side had some kind of manufacturing defect or scratch that rendered it completely unplayable.

Uh, it's supposed to sound like that.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

Or at least the reviewer for Downbeat thought so...

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I honestly think side 2 is just the tape of side 1 played backwards through their amps with even more distortion & effects.

Most boots just leave off all of side 2 to fit the 'real' jams on one CD, but I think they actually made this tape themselves the same day as the rest of the sessions, playing the effects live, Lethargy was always namedropping Stockhausen

last i heard, acute was going to reissue this but ran into a shitload of legal troubles and gave up.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 02:17 (nineteen years ago)

Lethargy is da bomb.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Well, Sharrock specified no reissue in his will, so . . .

xpost

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

holy shit. I was listening to sonny sharrock all day today! FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER

gbx (skowly), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Thank you to the three gentlemen who wrote me with the true information, LOL

jazzyjane, Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

Acute Records and their legal troubles...someone should just bootleg it again. With today's cheap remastering technology, it'll no doubt sound better then that crap bootleg on Stomach Ache.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 03:50 (nineteen years ago)

I'd be satisfied if I had "Demonizing Labor" as a POLYPHONIC RINGTONE and I don't even own a cell phone!

I am most curious over this album. If everyone has a copy, I would be ready to give it the one generous amount for it too.

Thank you

Sons Of The Redd Desert (Ken L), Friday, 2 June 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

earlier this morning i was gonna ask if you guys thought Chris Rock got sick of people screaming "I'm Rick James, Bitch" and then - I shit you not - i read an article today w/one of the writers of the CR show and he complained about the same thing. anyways. i wish i hadn't started this whole mess now.
