God, I thought it was Drive Like Jehu outtakes the first time I heard 'em... but they are good at what they do. Then again, John Grisham is pretty good at what he does, too.

Fair enough...Which brings me to the next question: Are there any bands on buddyhead that are worthwhile?

Arien, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YES... Your Enemies Friends. I don't know if it's even out yet, but I heard some promo stuff from The Wiretap EP and it's really cool... plus they have the lovliest keyboard player on the planet.

Andy, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with you on that one. There's one downloadble track on the buddyhead-site and it is pretty good. Too bad that other new release by The Revolution Smile is pure shite.

I've just listened to 'Mono', and it wasn't that great.

seven years pass...

Just listening to Black Lives at Golden Coast… I thought it was crap on first listen, second time around I'm kinda digging it.

not a huge fan of that one. it's decent, but it penance soiree is the only record of theirs that i will always come back to.

i feel kinda bad for them though what with the revolving door of musicians.

Drummer Jeff Watson is doing much more interesting work in Black Elk now... Check their Crucial Blast release from late last year Always a Six, Never a Nine. Watson's production is great, and his drumming is too.

Nate Carson, Thursday, 21 May 2009 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

after black lives, i thought he was back in the line.

i'm also interested in hearing about what don devore might be up to, if anyone knows.

borntohula, Thursday, 21 May 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)

(but i will check out black elk, thanks)

That's so freaking sad.

In other news, Slave Vows is surprisingly great.

seven months pass...

So we've just put up our Icarus Line feature. If/when we print it on paper, this will be our cover piece.

Slave Vows is a masterpiece.

one month passes...

Slave Vows mini-LP follow-up Avowed Slavery arrives 7th July, and is reliably seething and awesome.

Didn't like Avowed Slavery but thought Slave Vows was really unfairly slept on.

Just remembering a Black Lives-era live show I caught in Toronto, where they played nothing off of Penance and put on a very theatrical show to maybe a dozen people in a 300-capacity venue. (More people watched the openers, Mini Mansions.)

Anyway, if you want to purchase Penance Soiree "directly" from the band with b-sides and session tracks, you can. One of the best, and least influential, rock records of the aughts.

Slave Vows was great, one of their best, and their last album was great, too. And Penance is possibly my favourite rock album of the 00s. The Peel Sessions versions of The Holy Trinity just slay.

And they easily played some of the greatest shows I ever saw.

Arthur Funzonerelli (stevie), Sunday, 8 July 2018 22:30 (seven years ago)

oh wait, it was All Things Under Heaven I didn't like - never ends, plus the moany lyrics are a bad fit. Hopefully they shed both tendencies on the next one, if there is one.

Simon H., Sunday, 8 July 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)

Penance Soiree actually made my top ten list in whatever year it came out, but for whatever reason I never kept up with the band after that.

Groove(box) Denied (Raymond Cummings), Sunday, 8 July 2018 23:20 (seven years ago)

I love Slave Vows. For some reason I have yet to listen to their last one
