Your own version of the popular C4 TV series.

I have to DJ tonight for 3 hours at a world music party. I've got a bit of Rai, some Bollywood (mainly Asha Bhosle) and a little bit of Cuban salsa. With fifty quid to spend, what compilations should I buy to buoy up my stocks and not make me look like a complete fool.

eddie palmieri vs marcos valle. i do not even know if that counts as 'world music'. the very concept of 'world music' makes me sick

Did anyone else seethis article (about a couple of studiomonkeys who think they have invented worldmusic) in the Guardian a few weeks ago and feel ill? My favourite bit was this quote:

"Yes, we're going to benefit and may be able to retire to Malibu," he continues, "but if this album sells a zillion copies, people are going to be much more open to Maori music after hearing Ta Moko. The ends justify the means and I'm happy to argue with anyone about it."

'Bollywood Funk' is absolutely classic. There's good compilations on Normal Records ('Asian Takeaways', 'Doob Doob O'Rama'), with their typically idiosyncratic packaging (i.e., no annotation anywhere, increasing the Tralfamadorian aura). How about some Kwaito? That doesn't get much exposure. (I've actually never heard any, so don't take it as a personal recommendation).

Also incredibly great is 'Club Africa', 70s funk from, surprise, Africa.

Also, how about workers' songs from the former USSR and East Germany? You never hear those at 'world music' clubs.

You could try this, Pete. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I feel faintly soiled after reading those two gimps' wibblings.

The actual track Passion was so sad that it made my sadness something I could have a relationship with.

"Afrique Dynamique" on Nascente is a mid-price collection of traditional but v.danceable African pop. Good stuff. "Urban Africa Now" has more modern stuff mixed in but is more expensive - however money goes to CHARIDEE hooray.

Two excellent Afrobeat comps I believe I've plugged before: _Ouelele_, on Comet, and the 2-CDs-for-the-price-of-one-and-it's-all-smashing _Nigeria 70_ on AfroStrut.
