In no particular order: the Carter Family, Louis Armstrong's Hot Five, the Weavers, Monk/Trane Five Spot group, Cecil Taylor Unit, Mingus/Dolphy/Richmond/Curson quartet, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the Gillian Welch/David Rawlings duo. And these are just the American ones.

Rainy Day Regatta are great, ya'all. The 12" is better than the CD, I think, but the CD is also amazing. It's too bad that a lot of it's instrumental; the harmonies that Ryan and Mikael sing are fucking amazing on many of the vocal tracks.

Flipper's Guitar!

That's Keigo Oyamada's pre-Cornelius band, right? What are they actually like, apart from being, uh, acoustic (apparently)? Mary? Anyone? S/D would be handy.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 21 October 2002 02:43 (twenty-three years ago)

or a lovely burn, of course.

"That's Keigo Oyamada's pre-Cornelius band, right? What are they actually like, apart from being, uh, acoustic (apparently)?"

That's right! It's sweet, it's innocent, it's name dropping of '80s Scottish bands, it's rad!

Hmm...if you've heard Keigo's first solo effort, The First Question Award, you're almost there...

If you can stomach early Keigo, check out Flipper's Guitar-- "Three Cheers for Our Side" a collection of greatest hits on the most wonderful Trattoria records. Really, though, anything you get will be good, this one is a nice collection of hits though.

If you like this, you will move on to Bridge (Hideki Kaji's old band) for more J-neo-aco, and then Hideki solo (rowr!) and in no time you will be reliving those heady days of the early J-anorak scene!
