There's gotta be more than a few Canucks on ILM.

"Takin' Care of Business", DOA - the video is a stupid-but-endearing as hockey, and by extension Canada itself.

dave q, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Considering that hardcore has always had a big following in Canada, I'm really surprised Slapshot (Sample LP title - 'Sudden Death Overtime') didn't become absolutely massive.

"Shot! Score!" by the Zambonis!

David Raposa, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't really there was such a thing as "hockey songs."

How about "Cold as Ice" by Foreigner?

I'll get my coat.

"Well hello out there, we're on the air ..."

Stomping Tom Connors' The Hockey Song, for sure.

I want to say Rheostatics "Ballad of Wendell Clark pt 1 and 2" as well, but that would be ignoring Stompin' Tom's "The Hockey Song", surely the definitive statement about hockey ever set to music.

I remember back in the good old days of the Silver and Black and the Fabulous Great Western Forum that the Kings would always be introduced to an organ version of Run Like Hell. That's hockey music.

Go Canada.

2 Unlimited - Get Ready for This

Woohoo! Canada for gold!

Philippe, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

In terms of songs about hockey, I really liked "Fireworks" off of the last Tragically Hip album. The lyrics, as I recall, are quite priceless.

cybele, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd also be remiss in not mentioning Captain Tractor's song "Frozen Puck to the Head".

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Zambonis only sing songs about hockey.

The Swedish National Anthem, considering the score of tonight's game.

AN OUTRAGE. Pure and simple! It was a conspiracy amongst the judges! We need an inquiry into this heinous miscarriage of justice!

The Hextalls, "I'd Take an Al McInnes Slapshot in the Balls for You"

one year passes...
That Canada/ Sweden game is now ancient history, of course, but if I started a new hockey thread, some wiseass would doubtless sneer that it had already been done.

So, in honor of the impending Stanley Cup playoffs, I hereby revive this noble thread.

dave q, Monday, 7 April 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Whoops, castrated by my own 'cup' there. Damn those unexpected revivals! (What would've been the best song for my childhood idol Bobby Clarke? "Sweets for my Sweet"? "Sugar Kane"?)

dave q, Monday, 7 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

this forthcoming opera

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 7 April 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Canadian artist, Joni Mitchell is expected to have written at least one great hockey song, and in fact she has: "Raised on Robbery."

"He was sitting in the lounge of the Empire Hotel/ He was drinking for diversion/ He was thinking for himself/ A little money riding on the Maple Leafs/ Along comes a lady in lacy sleeves..."

EC, Monday, 7 April 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd really like to see that Czech opera!

It would be worth the price of a flight to Prague just to see some tenor rolling around on the ice in imitation of Dominik Hasek.

EC, Monday, 7 April 2003 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that it's the "best hockey song ever," but it doesn't seem quite fair to have a thread on this subject and not give a nod to the Gear Daddies' "I Want to Drive a Zamboni."

There's a song we all can relate to. After all, who doesn't want to drive a zamboni?

EC, Monday, 7 April 2003 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I sent Lara this. I wonder if she'll be confused?

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 7 April 2003 21:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Im sure somewhere someone has a copy of Gordon Fucking Lightfoot singing Maple Leaf Forever. 'Sudbury Saturday Night' by Stompin Tom and Pansy Division's 'Hockey Hair' need be included.

Don Cherry vs. Don Cherry: FITE!

EC, Monday, 7 April 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

And, not to sound cheap, but, I DID NOT PAY $25fucking99 FOR THAT CD, in case anyone was curious.

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only think of one hip hop song which references hockey: A Tribe Called Quest's "Steve Biko (Stir It Up)," in which Phife rhymes "knee-high to a duck" with "complexion of a hockey puck."

Now I'm well aware that hockey is not one of the pillars of hip hop culture, but Phife can't really be the only MC rhyming about hockey, can he? I mean, even if you had no interest in hockey whatsoever, you still might be struck by all the rhyming possibilities inherent in words like "zamboni" and "scrum," right?

So, thread-within-a-thread: Hip Hop's Hockey Allusions.

EC, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

It's about the jerseys. They're fuckin' large, yo!

Bryan (Bryan), Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

...and NWA's LA Kings caps...

EC, Tuesday, 8 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

They're fuckin' large, yo!

Beautiful, fucking beautiful!

EC has now raised my appricaition of Tribe much higher. I can't think of any Canadian rappers going on about hockey, not even Buck 65. At least the Rascalz did a song about a Canadian Wrestler.
