Didja see the Madonna video last night? What was the big deal, huh?

maura, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ha ha ha. i actually fell asleep before it came on. i must've had a PREMONITION about how dull it'd be.

so, odds that madonna asked vh1 and mtv to "ban" it? the only thing i can think of that would suggest otherwise is that cardigans video which got banned that had the lead singer driving irresponsibly.

OR 'bye bye bye.'

OR 'don't cry,' although that was from the pre-columbine era ...

maura, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I watched AND taped it. It was so irresponsible! I mean, Madonna didn't _once_ smack the older woman in the back of the head.

What is this world coming to when we can't rely on our pop icons to abuse the elderly?

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tried to be like "Thelma & Louise".

Actually closer in spirit to "Dumb & Dumber", though none of the humor was intentional.

Nicole, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just a correction: the Cardigans video DIDN'T get banned, I've seen it a hundred times on MTV.

I did not see the video because my cable is still messed up. In no way should the person who helped cause the muck up feel guilty about this, no.

Ally, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nicole, I don't know if the humor was unintentional. I mean, the way she rolled up on dude at the ATM machine was pretty freakin' hilarious. I was also amused that both she and the old lady put on protective gear before rolling out on the town.

At least she wasn't in cowboy gear for this one!

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dan, the parts you're talking about aren't the ones I found funny. It was more in the attempt to be edgy and violent, make a social statement, etc.

Guy Ritchie would have trouble directing a french fry commercial, let alone a Madonna video.

Nicole, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I couldn't believe that any of the video was meant to be taken as a serious comment. Perhaps this is why I didn't notice the attempts to be taken seriously. :)

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The dance remix of the song blows rocks. The video itself was great fun, and clearly the *almost* shooting the po-po is what got it in trouble. I mean, we've had "Warning" by Green Day and "Original Prankster" by Offspring inflicted on us, so this is all sort of odd.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the cardigans video was not banned but it was edited. originally she dies at the end of the video but that was decidedly too harsh for the kids, perhaps they didn't want a repeat of "the program" fiasco when silly frat kids laid down in traffic and died while imitating their onscreen counterparts. madonna? irrelevant.

keith, Wednesday, 21 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, unless the ending was extremely graphic and showed her dead, I don't recall it getting edited - the car still crashes rather fire- ishly.

Ally, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, and BTW, since we all just saw the video here at work thanks to the link on NYLPM - this is a great video, why are you all blasting it? It's probably the best video she's done in years, since Erotica's videos. I wasn't keen on the dance mix but then again the regular mix wouldn't fit the video.

Ally, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ally, I have no idea. I enjoyed it, too. I posted my thoughts to my new blog. Basically, the furor over it is pissing me off as I find it to be completely inappropriate, but the video itself and the dance mix (which I appear to be the only person on the face of the earth to like) were both killer.

(Gee, I hope the self-promotion thing was subtle.)

Dan Perry, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Too subtle, you should've wrote COME TO MY SITE FOR NAKED PICTURES OF BRITNEY SPEARS!

Anyhow. The dance mix would work in a club, but I'm not crazy to listen to it outside of that atmosphere, especially since I liked the original so much. The video was great though. Madonna looked good - the tattoos were awesome - the old lady made me smile, it was funny. My only reservation is that, quite frankly, I'm sick of her current obsession with finding as many euphemisms for female genetalia as possible and sticking them all over her videos.

Ally, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Meanwhile, the first thing I did after I saw the video was run to Napster to download that remix...

Dan Perry, Thursday, 22 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But...but....Dan! The new mix is copyrighted material!

Tom, Friday, 23 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think we can all see what that Ritchie's next film will be like...and who will be starring in it.

DG, Friday, 23 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*gasp* You're right, Tom! I should not have been able to download that remix! What about the dreaded Napster filters?

(The geek in me is cynically pointing out that the dreaded Napster filters are obviously not blocking out songs by "Maddonna".)

Dan Perry, Friday, 23 March 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...or by Metalllica. Or by ManicStreetPreachers. You'd think that they'd put in the filters common misspellings and names without spaces, those are pretty obvious ways to get around the filters, aren't they?
