That clip bored me to tears. The Rephlex grime guys do it so much better.

Whatever Harris turns his hand to there's always someone else who does it better. He's always so clunky and humourless and nowhere near as heavy and extreme and weird as he thinks. he's a bit like a mini-Laswell.

wow "super mantis"
(also wow blackmass plastics remixing "super mantis," from what i've heard of them i like their remixes better than their releases)

How is Vae Solis? Just found it in a used shop, thinking about picking it up tomorrow. I'm a big fan of most things Godflesh, Lull, Jesu etc. so am I correct to think I'd like Scorn as well? It's been a long time coming, I suppose...

Yeah yeah I know. Suppose I shouldn't really be asking this question, huh? Deep down, I think I just wanted to revive the Scorn thread. What else in the Scorn discog is v. good?

i like vae solis! i still have my tape copy and listen to it once a year or so.
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 16:55 (sixteen years ago)
i was just listening to my God tape on Caroline. i think it's a mishmash of u.k. release stuff. came out around the same time as scorn probably. sounded so fucking great. i wish more people would rip off God. more doom jazz psych please!
― scott seward, Tuesday, 28 April 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)
Evanescence and it's remix album Ellipsis are my two favorite Scorn things.
My favorite God record is the remix EP.

Man, there was a time when I seriously loved Evanescence and Gyral -- the "hard" beats and textures. Nothing I'm hearing this am, however, is even remotely doing it for me.

Five years later, I'm liking Evanescence quite a bit again. These tracks may be little more than riffs, beats and the occasional mumbled vocal...but they have tunes and textures you can dig into.

Another point for Evanescence -- "Days Passed" is excellent Metal Box pastiche.
― Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)
Evanescence and Gyral are the two best, I think, but the last time I revisited them they seemed awfully dated.
― Born In A Test Tube, Raised In A Cage (unperson), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:37 (fifteen years ago)
I thought so too. But then, listening again I thought I had been hasty. Maybe after all those years I was just missing ambient dub.

Does anyone still check his stuff? I mean, he's still recording, you know?

And I still love the synth in this song.

Was awesome at Supersonic last year. Louder than Sunn by about 15 minutes in (they were playing behind a thin steel shutter just behind me).

Just picked up Somniic Flux, his collab w Laswell for virtually nothing. I like it -- first cut features some weird dribbly water pipe stuff over filtered tuuvan drone and occasional backward cymbals and crashes. Fills a room nicely on a Sunday morning, without scaring the children too much.
― Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 29 August 2010 16:22 (fifteen years ago)
I have been meaning to check out Scorn for nearly 20 years now. What should I start with?
― pfunkboy (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 13:52 (twelve years ago)
Evanescence is probably a decent place to start.
― charlie h, Wednesday, 30 January 2013 13:59 (twelve years ago)
Agreed.
― Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 31 January 2013 12:53 (twelve years ago)
Early Scorn is really weird shit. Super-evil Metal Box with a sampler or something. I remember thinking they got better and better at the time, but I rarely feel like listening to, say, Gyral. But Colossus is sounding pretty good tonight.

Had a fun time revisiting Evanescence:

Great piece, Ned. Not saying it was a miss or anything, but I find it hard to hear that record without noting the influence of Bill Laswell who obviously Harris began to partner with pretty extensively around this time. Scorn records before that partnership just sound like they come from a completely different sphere place.
― Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 11 August 2014 20:24 (eleven years ago)
New album out today. I listened to it on headphones and now I think I have a concussion. The dude from Sleaford Mods is on one track which may be a selling point for some, but not for me.
https://ohmresistance.bandcamp.com/album/cafe-mor
He's also been releasing stuff as Fret - an album and a few EPs - which is just as punch-in-the-back-of-the-head as Scorn, but less oozing and more uptempo.
― shared unit of analysis (unperson), Friday, 15 November 2019 16:43 (six years ago)
Another new album coming out in late June. Kool Keith on vocals on one track. The music is actually lighter than some previous releases; at times it sounds closer to his late Earache releases like Gyral and Evanescence.
― but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 10 May 2021 17:23 (four years ago)
Yeah I've heard the advance as well, and accurate description. Almost feels like a new point of continuity.

That goodbye show at Supersonic 2011 was astonishing, transcendent stuff. Punishingly loud too, Sunn were playing on the main stage with just a roller shutter door in the way and all you could hear was Scorn.
