Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

this is our worst one yet.

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

"don't buy it, it's crap, download it from slsk!"

"Don't blame me, I'm just the bass player!"

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

classic of course! artists who are too into their back catalogue = artists who will never actually do anything interesting again

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

however there are so many options between "best" and "worst"

I think the righteous alternative would be to admit that as an artist, they are too close to the material and how it was created and recorded to accurately judge its quality, and that they'll leave it up to the public to decide how good it is.

n/a (Nick A.), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

I think they should follow the tactics of the Rolling Stones, who distract their fans from each shitty new album by announcing A WORLD TOUR

gear (gear), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

This used to be one of the few things I disliked about R.E.M. Before the release of every album since Out Of Time, they would give the exact same interview where Buck would blather on about how they're "on top of their game" and have "at least five or six albums left" in them.

Now, of course, these claims sound even more painful because they're made regarding albums like Around the Sun.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

"This is the culmination of everything we've done before. Except the other stuff was, um, good."

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

You have to assume, though, that most artists (barring the Rolling Stones types) really do believe themselves when they say it.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:58 (twenty years ago)

...As opposed to movie actors, who - interestingly - ALWAYS look insincere promoting their latest film.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

So musicians are better actors than actors? Hmm

nathalie's pocket revolution (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

REM - this was exactly the band I was thinking about. thanks

80's, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:01 (twenty years ago)

Sure. The actor always wants to know what the motivation is, but the musician has no such problem, he's got his motivation down cold- BUY MY MERCH!

Hahaha - Q Magazine calls Stipe on it:

[re: Green} You were describing it as a very uplifting and anthemic record at the time. . .
“Oh, I always say that. You can’t quote me on just about anything that I say about our records.”

You say every LP is the best one you’ve ever made.
“Well, you know what, that’s always honest. That’s not a line. If I didn’t feel that, believe me, the record would never be released. We have to feel so strongly about the thing, because once it’s pressed, it’s there. There’s no going back.”

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

"It's good."

So musicians are better actors than actors? Hmm

Not really - it's just that the actor is not the principal force behind the film, he/she is just its public face during the promotion cycle. If it was the directors making the variety-show rounds, it would be all "I feel I've really matured with this one, blah blah."

Off-topic, it's actually kind of criminal how few directors get to promote their films. Scorsese, because he's (wrongly) assumed to be a fun interview, and that's about it. Harmony fucking Korine, I guess.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:13 (twenty years ago)

Another thing: actors are used to speaking words provided by someone else, whereas musicians presumably write their lyrics for themselves.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

This seems to be a sign of late-careerism--generally when you're younger and more unsure you would say something like, "We really like it, we hope other people will like it, but it sure sounds good to us."

Eppy (Eppy), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

"It's not very good, but we eventually decided that it's apparently the best we could do so we're releasing it. Hopefully it won't be such a dismal failure on the charts that we never get another chance to try to recapture the magic we had on [previous album]. Fingers crossed."

Imagine This, Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:49 (twenty years ago)

"We'll be playing pretty much all the new tracks in our live show, but hopefully in a few years it will be down to one or two."

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I remember Mojo had a translator for what musicians say when they promote an album. From what I remember.

"We wanted to put some glamour back into pop music": we can't play our instruments very well

"I just want the album to sound like the music I hear in my head": The album is way overbudget and isn't meeting deadlines.

"I've always wanted to hear our music played by an orchestra": I'm currently enjoying the drug cocaine.

"This is our Sgt Peppers": This is our third album
