Taking Sides: No Doubt vs. Texas

a) Gregg Alexander vs. Dave Stewart

b) I thought the G2 article hit the proverbial nail when it re ND's success, 'a line has been crossed'. I'm intrigued when an act undergoes this kind of transmogrification, crossing a Rubicon into the Land of Eternal Playlisting. They've 'made it', now, onto the Simply Red level where every subsequent album will automatically sell 10 million, and even if it doesn't (cf Spice Girls) they're still in the (relatively speaking) 'A-list' of pop stars.

c) Dancehall crossover vs. hip-hop crossover - does this affect dancehall and hip-hop more than it affects pop/ AOR/ stadium EZ listening/ whatever?

d) Usually Brit spectacular-pop efforts look like a no-budget Channel 4 version of Spielberg-scaled US cash sponges (see Billie vs. Britney, Hear'Say vs. O-Town etc.), and I thought maybe ND would effortlessly (not pennilessly, mind you) eclipse Texas in similar fashion, but it might not happen, and if it doesn't is it because they're actually Scottish? (ie less complexes/rationalisations re 'making it in America', 'ironic distance' etc.) Also maybe Momus can tell us why a quasi-nation notorious (and esteemed by myself - let's see how he reacts to somebody who fetishizes tartan, haggis, and glue-sniffing!) for dour, Calvinist culture elected the most comically PC parliament one can find outside a student union!

BTW - what's the song title? Is it "Hey Baby Baby" or "Hey Hey Baby"? Whatever, I LUV LUV LUV it! Best pop moment in ages, for me.

If nothing else, No Doubt affect dancehall and pop through their fusion of both much more than Texas do vis a vis hip hop and pop. Someone suggested to me today that Bounty Killer might have thought long and hard about his guest spot on "Hey Baby" because it would probably be the first time a lot of white kids would actually be listening to a song featuring toasting more than once. It's hard to imagine the Wu-Tang Clan feeling a similar sort of concern.

No Doubt were tedium personified on TOTP last night. I wish bands would just go back to miming.
