The review in the Independent seems to think that Sufjan is poking fun at or sending up the subjects of his songs way more than I think is true. How much of this reaction is perhaps informed by the critic's British notion of "Middle America"?

yeah, i don't get that either (and i was at that gig, in the end). the laughter was because he was tellking jokes between songs (and because the between-song cheers were definitely somewhat tongue-in-cheek).
