Can anyone provide a list of links? Classical to experimental to pop, but he broader the range of music covered, the better. Cheers!

Aah Jimmy
thanx for remembering BLUNT the fanzine that came out in the mid 80s lasting through to the mid 90s (later leading to the book, BLUNT: A BIASED HISTORY OF AUSTRALIAN ROCK published by Prowling Tiger Press in 2001); infact alot of people, like yourself are confused by the new BLUNT which is out on newspaper stands and stores all over Aus these days I believe! You gotta love market confusion ... Im now shuddering for the new Waterfront record label, the glossy B-Side coffee table mag and a new Red Eye records label for new and groovy punters - yee hah!
here's to originality and foresight with names

It sure is.

moley, Friday, 16 September 2005 22:48 (nineteen years ago)

Bob Blunt here; thanx for your comments Mol, Kit, Jimmy and the forum for doing its thang! Just wanted to let you all know that I'm not devastatingly depressed or bitter re this palava - now that there is a BLUNT music mag being sold on national newstands unlike the very small scale non profit thingy that came before it.

These days I am in humble South Korea, and although I did hear stirrings of this sometime back, I don't really give a toss that a good name/good idea can now spread its wings all over the country - fuck it was hard getting someone to give a pittance for an ad to cover photocopy and stapler costs back in '86! Nothing like a machine to help you fly!!

I guess I just find it kind of amusing and funny thats all, so no hard feelings to the company with the money and the voice - good on you!

As for market confusion, I do find it encroachingly bothersome - ha!
Hmm.. what happens now that I may want to restore BLUNT fanzine to its old elegance and greatness (joke!); tut tut!

Feels kinda ironic seeing the name Joy Division on the front cover, given they were one of the first post punk bands I was lucky to hear in the early 1980s. Now you can read about it in BLUNT circa 2005!!

yay

cheers to progresss and foresight!

australians are stupid dumb butts who play stupid dumb butt music

if you disagree then i suggest you go to the big day out (more like big gay out) and try to put up with all that GUFF for five minutes before trying to kill yourself

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Sunday, 18 September 2005 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

is it very gay then? i've never been! is it like a rockfest equiv of syd mardi gras? are there floats? boys in tight shorts? are there lotts of butts on display?

or is it actually the complete opposite of gay? is it hairy boys with guitars and baggy shorts?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 19 September 2005 05:18 (nineteen years ago)

hair boys and baggy shorts is the gay. they wear the shorts because getting the pants down is difficult as the mardi gras buttpirates know all too well.

this is obvious and a fact jack

ESTEBAN BUTTEZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, Monday, 19 September 2005 05:43 (nineteen years ago)

the Lilypad's kinda gay. Well, it's very camp, and that's kinda gay, right?

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 19 September 2005 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

man i need to go next time. are there poppers?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 19 September 2005 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

i quite like guff. thats oren ambarchi's band, right?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Monday, 19 September 2005 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

I've never been to a Big Day Out either; c'mon Esteban enlighten us!

bob blunt, Monday, 19 September 2005 11:56 (nineteen years ago)

I've been to far too many. It's like a massive game of kick the can with ten thousand strangers in a bowl of dust in the midday sun. I would rather turn on five radios in my living room and and walk around aimlessly for six hours. At least I could get a beer or take a piss without queueing.

moley, Monday, 19 September 2005 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

Festivals like "Big Day Out" are fun. But only if you are on stage or in the air-conditioned VIP motorhome. Too many drunk people out. One of them punched me out and to this day, I need Gwenny to hug me when I think about it.

Chris "Chris" Martin, Monday, 19 September 2005 15:13 (nineteen years ago)

I went to two at the old showgrounds, and that was lovely. Wander around the various locations, sit on the grass under a tree, there are loads of great bands who could barely afford to come to Australia otherwise, etc. I went to two at the Olympic place, and once only because it was free: walk from concrete building over concrete to another concrete building to a corrugated iron shed with no walls and a concrete floor (oh the sound is shit? what a surprise!!) and there is no grass and everyone is 14 and all the bands are multi-million selling major-label lifers.

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 19 September 2005 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

the first year at concrete olympic land I didn't even go into the main stadium where the two 'main' stages were. I think most people just get a seat in there and stay all day...

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 00:19 (nineteen years ago)

bob blunt, a friend of mine has written a book on the Evil Star days based on his own band - one of the bands covered in your book I believe. It's sort of a tragicomedy. Can I have him send you a copy for your thoughts/opinions?

moley (moley), Tuesday, 20 September 2005 06:25 (nineteen years ago)

sure moley; sounds interesting
send me an email and ill give u my contact details over here

seventeen years pass...

So what are the biggest / best / coolest Australian music publications these days? Print or online (or both).

Bonus points if they cover punk rock / indie / underground music.

alpine static, Monday, 5 June 2023 20:52 (two years ago)

Big fan of Gimme Gimme Gimme zine - they have been MVPs re covering/fostering punk/weirdo goings on over the last few years. Worth buying the print version but they put a lot of stuff online too.

There’s a really shitty lack of music writing platforms in this country, print or online. Mess and Noise (mentioned above) was probably the last significant attempt? There is a smattering of music coverage in some of the national newspapers and culture journals, but generally it’s a bit of a wasteland.

Which is a shame because there’s a shitload of good stuff going on that could be better documented or benefit from critical engagement.

Would also keep an eye on the Repressed Records instagram - good souls who will always signal boost a worthy zine - and the shop’s recommendations and capsule reviews also highlight a lot of interesting underground releases.
