Does Hip Hop's past really need to be dug up and honored annually?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 September 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

Nope. Neither should rock's. DEATH TO ALL GUITARS!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 September 2005 05:55 (twenty years ago)

perhaps, but I dunno if a channel that up until a few years ago avoided rap like the plague is the best place to honor it.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 2 September 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

Don't get me wrong --- I'm not knocking Hip Hop. I just think the notion of any genre being singled out and having its roots laboriously exhumed every year seems a little ridiculous. I mean, look, I love Punk Rock --- but if there was a show that aired every damn year talking about how Tom Verlaine and Richard Hell first approached Hilly Crystal about playing at his divey Bowery club and that's how Television was the first punk band to play at CBGB's, paving the way for blah de blah de blah de blah....would I need to watch that show every year?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 September 2005 06:09 (twenty years ago)

I mean, I'm all for folks like Kool Herc and Kurtis Blow and Doug E. Fresh etc. etc. getting their proper due and all that -- but, y'know, if they got'em in 2004, what do they want from me in 2005?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 2 September 2005 06:10 (twenty years ago)

Well weren't you asking a rhetorical question in the first place, Alex?

Jena (JenaP), Friday, 2 September 2005 06:12 (twenty years ago)

of course it should. rap is a beautiful poetry and art form expressed by rhyming instead of reading.....where theres rhyme...theres always reason!

showing that vh1 isn't just mtv for old people, it's bet for old people too. swear to god, if i have to hear another twentysomething friend share a perspective on 80s music that happens to mirror that of a vh1 talking head, i will puke.

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 8 September 2005 03:23 (nineteen years ago)

Seems to me this show is directly analogous to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction things that VH1 runs every year. If you hate those, you'll hate this. I will probably watch this just to see Big Daddy Kane.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 8 September 2005 11:42 (nineteen years ago)

He, I'm told, gets the job done.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 September 2005 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

I think anybody who doesn't watch and support the VH1 Hip Hop Honors program hates rap. Which means they hate black people.

I think they should have a salute to the early days of hip hop every month. Let one awards show be just for Curtis Blow, next month can be for Grandmaster Flash, etc.

Causin' Trouble, Thursday, 8 September 2005 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I think people who spell Mr. Blow's name incorrectly hate black people.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:27 (nineteen years ago)

...incorrectly hate black people.

Guy Incognito (Guy Incognito), Thursday, 8 September 2005 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

Hip Hop Cultrue comes from a childs heart. The real story should be told and not the bullshit Russell, Nelson, Bill and Feb Five Freddy would tell because they were not there to see it.

Tony Crush, Friday, 16 September 2005 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

Only the Cold Crush Brothers, right, Tony?

Confounded (Confounded), Friday, 16 September 2005 11:49 (nineteen years ago)

~Biz Markie is my son's Godfather and one of the closest people in my life. He always reminds me of how the hip-hop culture has changed us as a people. Black people,hip-hop and its history is so strong. Everyone wants 2 take something from hip-hop and make it their own. Everything is white, come on. The one or two awards shows they let us have...just watch.
