ok, so i've got mp3s now, and a cd writer. i want to put the mp3s onto cd. you have to convert them into wav files i believer? and then into cd format? looking on the web there seem to be a lot of different things. so how do you do it?, which software do you use? where do i download it from?

I use Roxio CD Creator which seems to have all the features I want. Don't know if it's downloadable - probably not. I tried a few of the free ones before that and there seemed to be various problems with all of them. Musicmatch Jukebox seemed the best of the lot. btw, you don't have to create wav files - the software should be able to 'convert' the mp3 files on your hard drive on the fly to standard cd tracks whilst writing.

I also have Roxio. And like Phil says, you don't have to convert them to .wav files unless you plan to actually use a CD player to listen to them (and even some of the newer ones will probably play mp3s). For listening on your computer, it's almost better to just put mp3s on a disc, because you can get a lot more on there than by using .wav files.

i need them to be 'proper' cds, so i can play them on stereos and stuff.

the software will convert both WAV and MP3 files to CDA format when writing to a cd to be played on a cd player (I think that's how it works). so an initial conversion from MP3 to WAV on your computer will do nothing except add time. i've made many cd-rs which have a combination of MP3 and WAV files on them at the same time. Roxio also has some rudimentary editing programs (de-clicking as well which comes in handy if the initial MP3 file is a bit shonky).

doing the two stage process comes in handy if your computer has trouble keeping up with decoding and burning simultaneously, so you would create a cd image file from the mp3s, and then burn the image file to a cd-r. Ahead's NERO Burning ROM can do this, as can other more feature-rich burning programs.

Look here for more info.

If you have a Mac, itunes does it all for you, and you can download it at the apple site.

Get Winamp and select the output plugin in the setting dialog box. Then select the disk writer and a folder for you WAVs to be saved to. It will then play all the MP3s you have loaded into the playlist, although no sound will come out, and record them as WAVs into the folder you selected. Tip remember to change your output plugin back to the original setting aotherwise it will keep making WAVs. Oh yeah turn off the repeat function or it will keep overwriting your files. Sounds a bit complicated but its free and good quality. Then go burn your WAV's with your cd burning software, have a cup of tea and bourbon biscuit.

I use Nero and you don't have to convert anything...just drag MP3's to the file you working on. I got Nero with the burner but I think the software is available for download.
