a bit off topic, but here's my paris live music story:
i went to see the butthole surfers in paris. the audience was rude as shit, yelling, spitting, etc. finally, someone spit on gibby. he walked off the stage and wouldn't come back out, and that was the end of the show. paris is also the only place where i've actually seen a person shitting on a subway platform.

Man...France is really wack musically huh?

I guess I'll just look for old Magma records.

Metal Urbain just reformed and did a tour about a year ago ! But you'd be really lucky.

l'echangeur (is it on avenue charles de gaulle? near bagnolet - so to the east)

ummm, cafe de la musique

try buying that magazine - 'les inrockuptibles' when you get there, i don't really like it, but it has a detailed listings booklet for the paris area, comes out every fortnight.

Pariscope has the Time Out section in English.. Or Radio Nova magazine if you can read French, the bons plans section has some interesting listings.

Batofar (mostly DJs though). Divan du Monde? Instants Chavires = SO NOIZE, it is just outside the city in the suburb of Montreuil, pretty small and laid back, if you read the Wire you would like it.

Go to an FNAC store (right at metro Bastille is a good one for record shopping), they sell tickets for lots of gigs, so you could look at the concert listings and see what's up.

Try Infoconcert and when you have made your choice, go buy your ticket in a FNAC store or on fnac.com. Major acts are often sold-out a few weeks in advance, though.
Beware : Zenith & Bercy are huge venue, stadium-like.
L'Olympia, la Cigale, le Bataclan & l'Elysée-Montmartre are medium-sized venues (capacity 1000 or 2000 -- a bit more for l'Olympia).
All the others are probably smaller venues.

If you just want to hear some music in a bar, go to Guinness Tavern near Chatelet-Les-Halles, for example.

Info: Zurban and Les Inrocks... Pariscope is fairly wack, as I recall.

Batofar is good, Rex is pretty good for techno too... Elysee-Montmatre can be great on Saturdays, lovely space...

Also Fleche D'Or in the 20th, live bands followed by pretty decent Djs, or was so a few years ago.

Tbh tho', musically Paris can't cut it at all with London, NY or Berlin. Never found anywhere great to hear French touch stuff, fer Gawd's sakes.
