I'll be in the city with a few hours to kill before the show; anyone want to grab a bite/burrito?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 2 September 2005 23:42 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Earth play between Comets On Fire and Kinski two years ago here.. it was like one evil resurrection of Roky Erikson for one note, REALLY loud in between drone rock gymnasts. All three bands were amazing. But Earth stood out (although most of the crowd at that show would disagree with me, haha.)

jane (jane), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

As we on the Arthurfest thread have been saying, Circle absolutely ruled the roost. Easily one of the best performances, arguably the best in terms of just hitting it *right.*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

the bad news: i think the show tonight might be sold out already.

jane (jane), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:03 (nineteen years ago)

Hmmm. Break in.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:05 (nineteen years ago)

Oh that is a bummer. I was just about to buy a ticket.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 17:08 (nineteen years ago)

Im going on the 17th.... also there's going to be some cmj noise insanity on 9/15 "total wack attack of goofy bands"

Fushigina Blobby: Blobania no Kiki (ex machina), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

you have seen URDOG, joel? that band RULES.

Ian John50n (orion), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 03:52 (nineteen years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 03:55 (nineteen years ago)

Was @ the Knitting Factory this past night.
Jim O'Rourke & Giffoni stole the show for me.
Circle put on a hot act, also.

Jack, Wednesday, 7 September 2005 06:30 (nineteen years ago)

O'Rourke/Giffoni Duo sounded like a very malevolent robot barfing, then dry heaving, then simply dying. Knobs twisted to their extremes and back. Was corporeal. Lacked any subtlety, whatsoever.

Double Leopards sustained a high-end drone at maximum volume for over a half hour, yet was more beneficent and less overt in their textural shifts than O'Rourke/Giffoni, was more environmental. It felt like being pulled by a very large magnet, or maybe the sun. Loved it.

Urdog was less hard hitting and much less exciting, a trio of drums, guitar and farfisa organ. Their music could be described as psych/prog. They were sloppy but honed musicians, wore extremely tight t-shirts (at least the boys, the girl wore some sort of pious frock). The girl drummer was utterly without funk. I liked her mechanical beats. Any singing was atypical, what I could hear, like druids moaning over Jefferson Airplane. The farfisa did not sound anything like Ray Manzarek's farfisa. It was noisier, more of a fabric. The psych part never went totally bonkers, and the prog part wasn't surgical enough. Not unfun, just kind of there. I wished they had had more conviction. The crowd barely noticed.

Circle, a little bit metal, a little bit motorik. The singer looked like Freddy Mercury and borrowed some of his vocal tics and dance moves as well. The drummer was completely bald and very skinny, wore a black turtleneck and a black Lone Ranger mask and played with Slayer-like precision. The bass player was 6'5", round and had very long hair; he utilized classic metal gestures. The guitarist looked like Iggy Pop, shirtless and skin-n-bones and manic. They played three or four long songs. Total crowd pleaser, amazing musicianship, showmanship, bombast. Wished it were longer.

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

I left before Merzbow. Anyone catch that?

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 13:43 (nineteen years ago)
