The Church's new album: Yea or Nay?

So, The Church have a new album out. Their last one Hologram of Baal was probably my favourite of '98, so obviously I'm interested. However I've read a couple of reviews to suggest it's a bit mediocre and over-slick, and so whenever my hand goes to pick it up a CHILL OF FEAR passes through me. So, for those who know: is this response well-founded or groundless?

haven't all The Church albums been "a bit mediocre and over- slick"? For myself, I'd have to say nothing they have ever done has ever stuck to my ribs. They represent the Antipodes I don't care to have known.

"Starfish" was a great album. I didn't know The Church have a new album. I will try to get it.

I believe the Church are great! Esp: Hey Day and Remote Luxary. I do not like Starfish that much, but thier 90s albums are pretty good. I haven't picked up the newest yet, but I'm definately seeing them in Philly (4/23), and I'm excited. Steve Kilbey lives in Dover, DE!

This new one was not so bad...I didn't actually like Hologram so much, though, let alone Box of Birds. Last one that really grabbed me was Sometime Anywhere, actually, and this one seems to fit more into that mold for me. It's probably worthwhile if you can find it used or on sale--a bit of filler, and obv. it's not classic Church, but it's certainly not bad.

two years pass...
The new new one (Forget Yourself) has been out several weeks now, but has received very little attention around here. Just wondering if anyone else has cared enough to give it a listen. Though I hadn't bought one of their records in over ten years, I'd been on a nostalgia trip for a few weeks prior to this one's release, listening to Seance, Heyday, and Starfish quite a bit, and picked it up when it came out. I think it's a pretty fine record. Also wondering if anyone had seen them live recently because they're playing a pretty intimate venue here in a couple weeks and I think I'm going to check them out.

Thanks, Ned. Still mastering the whole searching-the-archives thing. It looks like I've got some catching up to do, starting with Priest = Aura.

Ned--what is the 'it' they nailed this time?

I don't mean this sarcastically--my GF loves them, but I blur out when I listen.

Ian Grey (Ian_G), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's almost hard to describe if you're not a dyed-in-the-wool fan -- which is a bit of a copout, but if I could draw a comparison, imagine following a band that started out perfecting one style/sound or variant thereof, then after a formless period is able to reconnect with something just different enough, not the past, not a complete turnaround of style, just something else. It's that kind of pleasure.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 March 2004 03:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That makes sense. And I'm all about *not* making 'logical' arguments for enthusiasm.

four years pass...

The new album, wherever that thread is. I can feel it baby. They are going to blow our minds this year. I can just feel it. I have this intuitive thing about it, man, god they're going to blow our minds this year.
