why is it so hard to find an original pressing of the stooges fun house?

its really difficult. none even on ebay. very odd. this remaster sounds far too sterile for me.

Well, you look up "cult heroes" in the dictionary and you'll see a pic of the Stooges. Yeah, they had their fans, and the album did make the lower half of the charts, but it's not like they were superstars whose records turn up cheap. I'm not surprised the original pressing doesn't turn up mo' often.

50 bucks for a sweet german pressing. probably sounds way better than any u.s. pressing:

that might be a later pressing though. it's got the buterfly label. first pressings would have the red elektra label? i dunno. what do i know?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

well that WL pressing above has the butterfly too....

hmmmhmhmhm, Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, you are right. like i said, what do i know? i think my canuck copy has the red label though. i would go for the german copy. come on, 50 bucks. it will last a lifetime. i would almost always go for the euro-pressing. the promo will probably go for too much.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Look for the vinyl with the gatefold sleeve. That's a keeper.

And read my fawning appreciation of the album in question here!

i dont get why you would go for the euro pressing over the american one. wouldnt the US one be better as the album was mastered and recorded, etc etc in the US?

theres some russian LPs on ebay, but not sure how great they would be. russian LPs always seem to crop up from time to time. i dunno how legit they are.

hmhmhmh, Sunday, 4 September 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

The Russian Stooges LPs are legit. They feature different artwork tho' - hand drawn versions of the original covers!

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

"wouldnt the US one be better as the album was mastered and recorded, etc etc in the US?"

No. sometimes. but hardly ever. i'd kill for an original japanese copy.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

don't buy a russian copy.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

i have a german pressing of mc5's back in the usa that sounds a zillion times better than any u.s. copy. and if i played you my original japanese copy of madcap laughs you would weep tears of joy. some countries really knew how to rock the vinyl. they really cared about how it sounded.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:02 (twenty years ago)

scott you are a gentleman and a scholar!

hmmhmhmhm, Sunday, 4 September 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

i think the copy we have is a french(?) pressing w. gatefold.

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 4 September 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

japanese copy sold for a grand last year:

http://www.popsike.com/php/detaildata.php?itemnr=2520118749

looking at other old auction copies is confusing. butterfly labels HAD to have come later (plus, didn't they start using that label when they became elektra/asylum?). it's a 70's label. the red label was earlier. AND they have gold label copies which is also a 60's-era label. even MORE confusing is the japanese copy that uses a 50's-style label!!!

AHA!!! This explains it all:

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 5 September 2005 03:06 (twenty years ago)

so, if anyone asks you, they stopped using the red label and the tan label in 1970 and went with the butterfly. so, you want a red label. which is what i have.

How in god's name did you find that obscure link, Scott?:-)

I've often related here how I ended up with two of these that I sold on ebay back when.

Yeah, ebay for the quick sale and discogs for the 'I can wait' best price, but as the box has been reissued more or less identically and a 2cd 'best picks' exists also, yep the bird may have flown.

Do people really say Cray Cray, btw?
